  • In this video I discuss Telegram giving user data to police, which is a direct contradiction to the statements on their website that they have given "0 bytes of user data to any 3rd parties or governments" This should tell you that Telegram isn't as trustworthy as they claim to be.

    That article is dated June 3rd. Popular German date formats look like DD.MM.YYYY or YYYY.MM.DD - the month is always in the middle.

      funny thing is from 1992 to 2007 only the YYYY-MM-DD format was allowed but since very few people followed it it is now possible to also use DD.MM.YYYY again

    • @gnul
      @gnul 2 роки тому +170

      The smartest is YYYY_MM_DD , where _ can be . - or whatever good separator.
      Then it is easily comparable, a higher number is always in the future compared to the date of a smaller number.
      =>
      YYYYMMDD < YYYYMMDD+x, x ∈ ℕ > 0;
      a < b means a is smaller than b, and smaller in this case means something like the date a happened before date b.

      @@gnul For data processing, you're right. For people, DD.MM.YYYY (whatever separator) makes more sense - by placing the smallest time unit first.
      There's a great chance that people know what year they're in, so in simple communication (non-formal) we can place that last or even ignore it. The day is what changes the fastest, so it makes more sense to communicate it first.

    The scariest thing about Europe to me as a german right now is this child protection act they are trying to get to fly.
    Meaning every messaging server then would have to allow an AI to scan trough a user's data to look for CP material, if they want to continue to operate in Europe. From what I understand anyways. Germany is apparently against that.
    The only way to avoid that to my knowledge is maybe via a service like threema. It doesn't even save images to your device unless you manually click to download, meaning the message stays encrypted.
    But that doesn't solve the problem of the AI still scanning your device. I don't want that. Because I think the argument that "why wouldn't you let someone look trough your stuff if you have nothing to hide" is bullshit.
    Maybe it's a work phone using WhatsApp that has sensitive company information. Maybe it's my own sensitive information like Screenshots of mobile banking stats or stuff like that. In the future the only way to have secure storage is cold storage or what.

      same with terrorist attacks. Germany, in order to prevent terror attacks, wanted to turn into a full blown surveillance state where they log every message and filter it for possible threats.
      however, if you compare the deaths trough terror attacks to the deaths trough homelessness, alcohol abuse or car accidents it pales so hard in comparison its laughable. it is simply a way to get surveillance under the protection of doing the morally right thing. you wouldn't want to die from a car bomb right? but car crashes? meh. who needs a speed limit on highways (though i myself actually am not a fan of speed limits on highways because i like driving fast as fuck on a free and open road. if every city gets a public racetrack they can go ahead and put a speed limit if they want xD)

    From what I understand, you overstate telegrams glowieness a little. This "zero byres of user data" claim you're deboonking in the video refers to procedure of decrypting and disclosing the exact content of server-hosted messages.
    Now, there is another claim in telegram privacy statement that says:
    "If Telegram receives a court order that confirms you're a terror suspect, we may disclose your IP address and phone number to the relevant authorities. So far, this has never happened. When it does, we will include it in a semiannual transparency report published at: [link avoided for spam filter algorithm]."
    Thus, Phone number and IP address alone is what most likely meant in the article by "user data". Ask me, having an anonymous SIM card and not logging in using your home IP address is a must do no matter what communication method you're using for shady stuff.
    There isn't any report YET, however. If they end up not failing to provide one, then I see no contradiction taking place with what they claim. Except that their wording needs a little concretization.

I use Telegram as my main messaging app. No I do not use it to avoid the eye of the "feds" as you call them but I do like the knowledge that my messages aren't being sold to the highest bidder. However when people talk about Signal vs Telegram they always talk about how secure it is ... but how good the app is as a messaging app is never discussed. Telegram is FAR FAR superior as a messaging app to Signal. The only reason to use Signal is when you need complete and utter privacy at the cost of user experience. So while Telegram may store my IP and phone number and release it if I am suspected of terrorism but doesn't disclose my chats or data while being an amazing messaging app then that's a compromise I can accept. Maybe you're needs are different but security isn't the only factor in your choice of messaging app.

    I feel like Telegram is a sort of middle ground. Hell will freeze and thaw before I'm able to get my friends on Session. Signal, maybe. Telegram, however, is easy to convince people to get. The gimmicky features like Stickers are a nice attraction into the app, and it provides every feature you'd expect of a competent standard communication app; quick and easy messaging, file sharing, video and voice calling, group chats, etc. It's hard to convince even technically inclined people to move to more secure platforms, simply because no normie wants to give up their fancy features just so that they can hide things they don't feel the need to - as I've heard family say several times "I don't care if they watch me, I don't do anything I need to hide". Nobody wants to use a platform none of their associates are on, even us technically inclined people. I mean, here we are, with Google accounts. Most of you likely have Twitter or Facebook or something. Currently, any kind of security requires giving up a lot of features, which normies just won't accept. If the masses don't accept it, then it'll be a nerf even for those more in-the-know to use it. Honestly, since we have the source for the client, if somebody could build a open Telegram server, I think that'd be the easiest way to make more people secure. Hell, then if you were dedicated enough, you could likely swap the Signal library in, and remove need for phone numbers.

      Year first makes absolutely no sense in day to day life, or even for most archival purposes, unless you have a small number of files to organize that way (ie, monthly or yearly documents). Anything you're dealing with on a day to day basis, year first is a massive pain to deal with. And if you do need to easily divide files by year, that is easily accomplished with folders. Day first is a much much more sensible option, though when you're talking about organizing documents on a computer, day first or month first both have desirable traits in various situations.
      Also, screw standardization, I'm going to represent today's date as Anno Domini 2022, the Eighth Day of the Month of the Wife of Jupiter.

      it uses signal's ring token E2EE method which is good. It's also on track for full decentralization and peer 2 peer serverless via dendrite. The others do not compete with matrix, they're not even close to the same tier. It is a massive project, ~3 servers, 30+ clients it is far bigger project than all of the other chats combined, really. definitely ambitious. I've used it ~ 4 years and it is going very quickly now.

    I actually think that telegram's homemade encryption 'could' be better simply through obscurity. Yes, there may be more attack vectors, but the hackers would really have to study the code hard to figure out what's going on. Whereas an exploit found in a common well understood algorithm could be a lot easier to target. Not saying telegram is better at all. I'm just saying that could be a positive if they really know what they're doing.

    • @Optimistas777

      1B users gives a lot incentive for an attack, but proprietary algorithms don’t get as much attention for defence. That’s the big problem
