  • When starting a smart home I generally recommend staying away from a hub. However, that is not the case with the Swtichbot hub mini. Rather than locking you into an ecosystem, it is there to open it up to do so much more.
    What are those things? Well to find out you will need to watch.

    I bought 5 of these to run the AC around my house initially i wanted one for my shower room so i could tell alexa to turn off ac(heating mode ) in say 15 minutes to dry room out. They work really well.

    The IR blaster is interesting especially if you have an older Samsung Smart TV as they used to shutdown their computer a few minutes after being turned off which meant you could no longer turn it back on over WiFi a few minutes after it turns off even though it has a setting for you to do so. Mind you, that would mean renaming my TV to a name that won't be used such as it's model number or serial number and then having the smart speaker use the mini hub to control the TV instead of over Samsung's SmartThings app.

      It is a trade off, but sounds like it could be worth it.

      @@Wanderer001_Reviews Well, the SmartThings WiFi access to the Samsung tv is very limited to begin with, basically just volume, channel up and down and power on and off. Yes, I found that weird as it was Samsung's own product. The account also logs out after a several months so you have to log back in to activate it again. So the remote interface that you showed on your video looks more complete than that of SmartThings but I think the tradeoff might be that the power will be a power toggle so saying something like "Alexa, turn off the tv" while the tv is off might turn it on whereas if you did that through SmartThings, Alexa would only turn it off if it was truly on. I guess, I'll order a hub and find out if there's really a tradeoff to be concerned about. We also currently have old CRT analog TV's with a separate desktop digital tv converter in a few rooms and we use Harmony universal remotes to sequence the IR for the converter with the tv but we have the problem that from some locations the Harmony can blast the TV but not the converter, so another project will be to see how the hub deals with sequencing those devices and how this interferes with the Harmony control as it may obviate it. I'm not certain if I want to automate those older TV's beyond just using the Harmony controllers as we don't really use them much but this mini hub does seem to open up a few possibilities so long as a suitable position with power can be found for it...
      I got into the Switchbot devices in that this summer is hot, my father just got put on insulin and though I used to use Frio evaporative carriers to keep "in use insulin" at a reasonable temperature, I opted to put my Dad and myself on the new Breezepack PCM carriers but the fridge thermometers I ordered to see if the high temps gets too high proved to not have true min/max displays but advertised a max/min feature that was useless so I got a Switchbot thermometer, it worked well (except setting the warning range doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect so I might have to contact support), so I was going to scoop up another for my father and there was a special of three with a mini hub hence I was looking into how the mini hub might be useful.
      Now, I don't want to pay for a subscription for cloud services but so far, I haven't found anyone saying if there's a subscription and your video also didn't mention any subscription.

    question: does the hub remember the settings and groupings? I need the hub to display all groupings and calibrations set up before when it connects to a new phone

    Thanks. Very informative. Can I have it turn on my projector, my TV, my AC and a couple of switchbots all in the same room by a single verbal Alexa command? Use case - for my golf sim. Can I say 'Play golf' and have it turn on AC, Projector, TV, my computer and my launch monitor? The last two with the switchbots

      As long as the devices that need the IR blaster are all in range of of the hub you should be able to.

      It does not. The or blaster of this hub is more of an extra that it can do and not it's primary function. So it only sends out a signal.

    I wish you’d demoed the hub’s integration with Google Assistant, Alexa, Siri. Is it free? Is it fast/reliable?

    • @Wanderer001_Reviews
      @Wanderer001_Reviews  Рік тому

      I will keep that in mind for future reviews. However, yes voice assistant intigration is free. As far as speed goes that depends on the voice assistant. I find Alexa to be faster then Google Home.

      Line of site is only needed for the use of the IR blaster. If you are using it to access some of the swtiches via the app over wifi they can be in other rooms.

      Not an ad, but a item sent to me to be reviewed. It is made to be a gateway for other switchbot devices that could only be accessed locally. The IR blaster is an exter thing it can do. Kind of like iceing on a cake.
