I wish the magnetic rose would of gotten it's own complete movie. The other segments were great but magnetic rose was a masterpiece and you don't see hardly any anime space films
To be honest i think its brevity was to its favour. It flows really well as a 40 minute short film and i think lengthening it would only hurt it after a certain amount.
@@patricklewis9787 likely because there's so many short cuts taken in animation to pump shit out. These older films are typically full of details. I honestly think if effort was made they could match it, they just don't because the art is less important than revenue.
I love whenever I find some true glimmers of gold from the past, that seemingly not many people ever mention when talking about animated movies. I've watched Magnetic Rose four times now, in the past week, and it's amazingly beautiful each time. The art is fantastic, the voice acting is damn good, even in the dubbed version,, and the music is hypnotic. Great video btw.
Yeah sounds like he's just used to the generic anime of today which all look the same; i.e., like prepubescent children with shiny skin and manufactured computer generated shading and color. Sounds like he's not accustomed to traditional hand drawn anime with original character designs that don't resemble the latest Isekai. 😕
Nice summary though there is a talent in this film that is already bursting with top tier talent that you missed. That is Hiroyuki Okiura who both did the art (along with Kon) and was the animation director. Okiura is most famous for Jin-Roh, but is known for having an animation style that has an incredible realistic attention to detail. See the opening to the cowboy bebop movie for another great example. I like stating that this film literally had an anime dream team behind it. I don't think we'll ever see a collection of talent so great behind an anime film than what was put behind Magnetic Rose ever again.
The worst thing is that this may be possible today but several factors prevent "dream teams" from being formed. The main factor is obvious, money. Making masterpieces is expensive and no one in the industry wants to fund daring projects anymore, like this collection of short films, for example.
Thank you! At LAST, someone has put the dots together and acknowledged Satoshi Kon's VITAL contribution to the 1995 anthology film 'Memories' which for TOO long has hidden under the title of Katsuhiro Otomo. P.S. intrigued to hear that Otomo is STILL working on Akira and more original content, but knowing the SLOW perfectionist nature of this guy (just look at how LONG his last feature' Steamboy' took to come out) with nothing much since from him from back in 2004 I wouldn't put that much hope on ANY of this coming to completion soon! Would be curious to know your source though.
I'm glad other people found this gem. It's an absolute masterpiece, and probably my favourite sci-fi horror ever. If there's an anime that would make an incredible feature film it is this, and it's crazy how many industry giants basically started their career with this project. Great video!
Saw this when I was younger, too young to know or remember anything about the name. Even seeing "magnetic rose" didn't bring anything to memory, but these beautiful haunting images are something I DO REMEMBER. This animation is so beautiful and impressive that I'm glad I can watch it again as an adult now and enjoy more works by the same artist. Thank you for helping me remember something I'd never have remembered on my own!
I'm so glad I found this! I was taking a jaunt down memory lane, and I came across an old AMV that used Magnetic Rose as it's story line. This short feels like a fever dream because I felt like I was the only one to have watched it in my friend group at the time. I had no idea Satoshi Kohn worked on this piece, but I can see his fingerprints everywhere on it. I watched it 15 or more years ago, and it still comes to mind every now and again. It's a stunning piece of work. Thanks for your time and effort you put into this video retrospective.
I've been looking for the name of this movie on and off for years. I saw it when I was a little kid and it left a huge impression on me, but I could never find out what it was called. Now I know, and it's off to Amazon to get a copy immediately.
Great video, but I have to disagree with one thing. You said this anime’s art hasn’t lived it’s best shelf life, which is just wrong. Memories (along with other 80s and 90s anime) it was all hand-drawn with real pencils, paint, and cels, which gave it a unique, authentic feel. The storytelling was more mature too, and the art had more realistic proportions, unlike some of today’s digital anime shows where the characters have big eyes and small noses with the usage of lazy CGI techniques and flashy, unnecessary effects which is just cheap. But 80s and 90s anime were real art without any lazy short cuts and they were peak! Memories especially had an incredible art style, maybe even better than “Akira” and it barely used CGI, which made it stand out even more.
Your content is great. This is 2 years ago, so I hope you've fixed that issue of mic picking up some bangs and clatter when you possibly bump the table it's sitting on or handle it roughly... if you use headset, then maybe the cable hitting something is to blame, it's amazing how easily the cable transfers handling noise up the wire to the headphones mic :)
Omg, saw this short when I went to an Anime club in the late 90s and have never known the name of it. Searching variations of "anime ghost space ship" has yielded nothing over the years lol.. dunno how I stumbled across this but looking forward to checking it out again!
To me, the cherry on the cake is when at the end: a) The guy escaped and sees the rose petal inside his helmet, and b) The magnetic forces pulling the giant debree together ends up shaping the whole ship as a rose. Just OOF
"Victorian house" Well mansion rather and you were close, but it's not Victorian-- it's Empire style, ala the French Empire under Napoleon. There's some odd 20-40 years between the heyday of the Empire style and the beginning of the Victorian Era. Weird nitpick but hey, the more y'know. Great video btw. Maybe there's some comparison between Eva and Josephine to be made here, idk. Quick Wikipedia check and yeah, Josephine's Château de Malmaison was known for it's rose garden. Pretty neat that even such a small detail as this was so well thought out and executed in Magnetic Rose. These guys really knew the story they wanted to tell, and made sure everything in the short film was significant to make it as poignant as possible-- even if it was just a reference material or an allusion.
OK. I have to say this: Solaris is not an original movie, it is an adaptation ( it was adapted by both Russian, and American movie studios). The story of those movies is based on the novel by Polish S-f writer Stanislaw Lem.
Why can’t people animate like this anymore?!? Adult animation like the new dc movies and that skull island series just look like bland picture books it’s so sad but literally every shot from these eras anime’s could be a painting it feels like people gave up the hard work for an easier time
Can you make your content inclusive by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is extremely hard to watch it relying only on the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)
Relating stories to someone's original story is poor taste as it implies no one has original ideas and that we all copy one another in some way to reach a level of notoriety. If you personally don't have the words to adequately describe someone's works without referencing another work then you probably shouldn't be creating content using only words as your only offering with those beforementioned works being monetized behind. Poor taste.
While I agree to some point, sometimes it‘s just more describing to a general viewer, if you relate or point out similarities between works/us them to describe said work. I imagine you must be very fun at parties.
It was complete
Galaxy Express 999/ Photon Space Sailor Starlight. These are great classics, Your Welcome!
I don't. They would just ruin it.
nah, it was perfect as is. didn’t need to be any longer.
My friend also said it's a good take on the classic "Siren song" in which sailors are lured to their deaths
Always thought Fallout Dead Money is inspired by this
Please no take personally
Why is your friend so astute?
A part of the layers of using "madame butterfly" as the diva's song
4:23 I'm sorry, but the artstyle is magnificent.
The art style has held up just fine, and will continue to hold up just fine.
Fr he said the artstyle doesn’t hold up but most anime today come out looking ugly and boring I think it looks fine
It’s more than fine. It’s better than most modern animation !
@@patricklewis9787 likely because there's so many short cuts taken in animation to pump shit out. These older films are typically full of details. I honestly think if effort was made they could match it, they just don't because the art is less important than revenue.
"...ship known as corona"
"...oh jesus christ"
Proper reaction to that word after what happened in 2019-2020.
Kon, kano, and otomo is an insane trio. So many gems out there like this one and angel's egg mentioned in the video.
I love whenever I find some true glimmers of gold from the past, that seemingly not many people ever mention when talking about animated movies. Wait... aren't you also dwelling on the memory of the comfort that magnetic rose gave you on your first watch, something that magnetic rose is about?
You said the art hasn't lived its best shelf life???? That's straight up blasphemy lol
Yup lmao
Yea, if anything, older anime ages like fine wine.
must've been a typo in the script.
Exactly lol.
Yeah sounds like he's just used to the generic anime of today which all look the same; i.e., like prepubescent children with shiny skin and manufactured computer generated shading and color. Him: "Everything Kon works on is in the eye of the mainstream public"
Me, sadly: "Everything he _worked_ on" 😢
Man was taken from us too soon 😔

into a movie*

Memories makes me cry every time, a father grieving his daughter just hits hard.

I really love the art it’s beautiful
in the knife scene, Eva's uses The Red Dress from Zeffirelli's production of Puccini's Tosca, immortalized by Maria Callas.
ima be honest idk what the fuck any of that means but now i'm intrigued so i'm gonna start googling thank you
You make some perfect comparisons to other movies in this review.
Amazing video. Very informative
u king. i love this video gr8 work ⛄️
These three short films were amazing the ones that stand out is magnetic rose and stinkbomb. Please make more
Really glad Solaris was mentioned, it’s very similar to the original novel.
I just saw this last night and thought it was amazing.
We will probably never see such craftsmanship again in anime. And that saddens me deeply.
I went and watched it, thank you
me too
I've been looking for the name of this movie on and off for years. I saw it when I was a little kid and it left a huge impression on me, but I could never find out what it was called. Now I know, and it's off to Amazon to get a copy immediately.
Actually watch the first story here on UA-cam. Someone uploaded magnetic rose.
great video, I've been looking for a more detalied analyses of Magnetic Rose since I first watched. thanks for the hard work

OMG what? This work is from Satoshi Kon? I've seen Paprika and Paranoia Agent, but I've never heard of this! I'll watch it for sure!
The best sci-fi in anime, ON GOD!
Dude your vid quality is f great
I thought you were some big channel
Imagine my surprise when I subscribed
Damn good job man!

Just seen it... blown away!

Ghost Ship 2002 is literally Magnetic Rose
I knew I wasn't crazy when I noticed that.

This movie is a masterpiece

a) The guy escaped and sees the rose petal inside his helmet, and
b) The magnetic forces pulling the giant debree together ends up shaping the whole ship as a rose. Just OOF
I wondered while watching it why it was called Magnetic Rose. Then I got to the end and I was like, ohhhhhhhhhhhh.
Eva was completely ripped from this (name and all) to be the main antagonist of the 1998 Squaresoft game Parasite Eve
I just watched the film yesterday, it's totally worth it
"more recently in 2014"
That's almost a decade ago chap.

How have I never heard of this old Anime?
What happened to artists like this? Where have they all gone?
OK. I have to say this: Solaris is not an original movie, it is an adaptation ( it was adapted by both Russian, and American movie studios). The story of those movies is based on the novel by Polish S-f writer Stanislaw Lem.
"Known as the corona" (yes I can see where this is going)
What's the status on the "Orbital Era" movie? I can't find any recent news about it.
Does anyone know the song used at the end?
Also awesome video.
Holy fuck your channel is a gem
Kino
Fun fact: Eva's backstory is directly based on the life of a real opera singer, except the psyco part, Maria Callas
YOKO KANNO AYYY
Dude I watched it just now and I’m crying
It's like the combination of Ghost Ship and Event Horizon
1:50 what’s the name of the music? :)
Search for "magnetic rose chorale" that should pop the song up on UA-cam
Chorale - yoko kanno ua-cam.com/video/yo-GVtMVlVM/v-deo.html
Why can’t people animate like this anymore?!? Adult animation like the new dc movies and that skull island series just look like bland picture books it’s so sad but literally every shot from these eras anime’s could be a painting it feels like people gave up the hard work for an easier time
Making anime that good is expensive. More profitable to churn out a lot of lower-quality stuff.
music?
5:14 - May-cross plus
Jesus, man
does anyone have a link to the full film to watch online ?
이거 대박이지..
💔
I do be subscribing tho
I think I watched this in toonami
Can you make your content inclusive by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is extremely hard to watch it relying only on the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)
The ship name what ???
🌞
You talk more about Yoko Kano than the film itself
just let it play no one cares what you wanna blurg about it.
Ghost in the shell copied this a bit
No skit payne :/
thats what im saying
go to sleep
Why even make this video if you’re not going to talk about the actual story what so ever
Saw it (Memories) in a theater and I didn’t enjoy it
Old masterpieces must be saved from the woke cult. Whatever fell in their hands have been destroyed already
Disliked because of the over analyzation but you’re well on your way!
I dont think its possible to over analyze Memories...

They referenced that dinner scene in bioshock 1.
Jesus man. You butcher the shit out of the titles and names of everything in this video. LOLOLOLOLOL
Really glad Solaris was mentioned, it’s very similar to the original novel.
