love this! the contrast of blue cat and philia's relationship in real life and online is heartbreaking, that realization is definitely one of my fav parts.
Blue cat was hoshino & philia was?

If only more people could watch the movie and this video analysis. It’s so amazing
i never stopped thinking abt this movie. and it’s been since may it’s amazing.
i feel like i know you from discord weirdly
that intro was genius
Thanks for this analysis. It's so surprising that nobody is talking about this movie on youtube. One of my favorite movie
Very nice video analysis. It was particularly valuable for me for placing the film in the context of other Japanese pictures released near the turn of the millennium.
It should be noted that, despite its grim themes, AALCC is also at times a very funny movie. Even though the young people do crazy things, the filmmaker is very sane and sees both the tragedy and the absurdity of what is happening.
amazing analysis
😂😂😂😂 love this movie... If you have normal life you will hate this movie.
I feel like all that 3 people.just one person...

I'm turning 18 next year and I'm scared
Same
As someone who recently turned 19, don't worry! Your age doesn't really change anything
People will have more expectations towards you and the pressure will get a little bit bigger but at the end of the day, you'll realize you'll be fine. It can be pretty fun too because you get more freedom so be sure to enjoy because one day you'll miss it.
bro explained the movie out of order, you're supposed to make this make more sense, not confuse me even more..
Nah can't watch this video the keyboard typing noise be annoying af.
How did you even finish the movie then
This movie remind me A LOT of the visual novel subahibi
I like to believe that the scene where Tsuda messes around and flies the kites is a metaphor of her actually experiencing what children her age shouldve. Like restoring her innocence, since children often fly kites and play around. She's been doing dirty work for so long and when she saw the kites and joined them just felt so significant. We got to see her smiling and laughing while flying the kites and i just find that so child-like. Its heartbreaking.
Brother I also want to watch this flim so can I get advice where to watch it 🥺

to me it felt like hoshino wasnt always mentally. there/present, and the incident during the trip was kind of a last straw sort of thing. great video
Yeah and how he has his parents divorced and. His parents business shut down. Those things can defiantly mess up a child
Can’t decide whether Hoshino was born a psychopath or is like a reflection of the society around him, first the school’s positive image of a model student, then the school’s dark side of vicious bullying
I don’t think Hoshino was born as a psychopath , his life wasnt great in school which actually affected him in some way. He also experience like a close death experience which basically altered his life for the worst.
@@toky0fantasy516yea exactly
@@toky0fantasy516Family financial troubles, minor school teasing and near death experience doesn’t really add up to why he was obsessed with sexually humiliating and abusing his classmates.
I think it’s fair to say he was always like this in some way but his personal events triggered him to stop resisting and embrace his desires. I think nearly losing his life made him to want to live life to the fullest, unfortunately for a guy like him that meant becoming a cruel sadist.
I think he was made into a bad person , he was bullied as a kid and was in a near death scenario and always he was assaulted during the summer trip
@@jesusrodriguez4687I missed it. When was he assaulted?
Honorable mentions for similar movies that came out from the same time and place:
-Tokyo Rampage, Toshiaki Toyoda
-Blue Spring, Taiyou Matsumoto
-Bright Future, Kiyoshi Kurosawa
-Harmful Insect, Akihiko Shiota
One more thing for shoegaze music fans that all about Lily Chou Chou also inspired two of the shoegaze albums by the independent Korean artist Parannoul which are their only current albums available
Blue Spring was directed by Toyoda although the original manga was made by Matsumoto, I didn't include Toyoda so I can point that out lol
yoo u like all about lily chou chou AND know parannoul? glad i'm not alone ahah
@@justanotherfishinbikinibot6060 I'm a true Gatekeeper I think ppl who listen to Parannoul should listen to Lily Chou Chou or watch the movie atleast once
I didn’t know that Parannoul were inspired by this movie, but I instantly recognized the cover art of “To See the Next Part of the Dream”.

the background section was very informative, i had been wondering why so much 90s japanese movies/anime/manga was about delinquents and the internet, thanks for this
9:48 this scene broke me, the mood switch was insane because her flying the kite with the random people wwas acutally really wholesome
Amazing video and analysis, thank you so much for this. I watched this movie because I saw someone recommending it in a comment on a video about the movie "Blue Spring". It's probably my favourite movie, and "All about Lily Chou-Chou" has become one of my favourites as well. If you haven't seen "Blue Spring" I recommend it, I believe it's a masterpiece like this one :)
The late 90s and early 2000s was a golden age of Japanese cinema, especially youth oriented entertainment. It doesn't get talked about enough but we had some EXCEPTIONAL films come out during this period...Blue Spring, All About Lily Chou Chou (which to me is like the 3rd best film ever made), battle royale, perfect blue, ichi the killer, pulse, suicide club, spirited away, waterboys (for the lighthearted)...it was such a great time.
just watched blue spring because of this comment. it's was an amazing movie, thanks for the recommendation.
Blue Spring was an amazing movie!
I compared a lot of scenes of lili chou chou with evangelion as they have this similarities when they explained the way the character feels
as someone who hasn't seen evangelion, how do they relate? thanks
@@moshimanju7576 the similarity i see is how depression and loneliness is explain although they don't have a similar plot they show the topics alike
All situation different.but the emosi just the sama.
One day you older ,and remember our past.you will smiling, thank God I made it through.😊
That feeling undescribable.😂
thank you for this! with its run time being 2 and a half hours some bits of the movie failed to register in my mind and this cleared it up for me so thank you! but also something that still doesn’t quite register was the r*pe scene and if Yuichi knew it would happen because later in the junkyard the girl (forgot her name but the one with the bob who basically lead Kunos hate train) confronts the boys and discussed killing Hoshino because she didn’t want or tell them to go as far as they did pointing out that she didn’t know it would happen so maybe Yuichi also didn’t but this thought doesn’t really make sense when you compare it with how Yuichi was crying outside the shed like he knew everything that was going on in there. I’m hoping that the case is he didn’t know because while he did essentially get “revenge” for Yukon it would suck to have another persons trauma especially one as severe and serious as r*pe be used as character development.
Yuichi didn't necessarily know that the said act would be done to Kuno in the junkyard. However, knowing the situation that Shiori Tsuda was in and the things she had experienced, Yuichi knew that Kuno would also turn out the same way and experience the same things. In addition, I believe he also admires/likes Kuno, so this just adds into his anger and frustration.
His crying was like a symbolism of his frustration and guilt for being a part of the problem. This, along with Tsuda's death afterwards, would then serve as a type of turning point for him to understand that he can't take it anymore, hence leading to him killing Hoshino.
Man this movie is one of the most underrated movies ever. So deep and beautiful

This movie has broken me every time I've seen it, and yet I still keep going back to it.
I wouldn't say this is my favourite movie, but it is surely my reference one. I discovered it back in 2003, when I was studying cinema, and for a year I watched itevery day, non stop, sometimes 2 or 3 times in the same day. I analyzed it in every posibl angle, trying to get a grip of what magic operated in its creation. Of course, I failed miserably, the end result is bigger than the sum of the parts (thus the magic). Still, a pivotal film/moment in my life and a work of art that I treasure deeply in my heart.
Kudos for connecting it to Pulse/Kario, another long time personal favourite and, beneath its horros cover, an essay in sadness and isolation in the modern society.
Thanks, great video
Every teenager who's tired of life should watch this masterpiece fr. I loved it. Is there any movie which gives same vibe as this movie??
blue spring (2001) it’s not exactly the same but it deals with teen delinquency and it’s like a coming of age movie as well
ITS SO GOOD ITS ONE OF MY FAVS TOO 🙏🙏
Not a movie, but maybe you should read Oyasumi Punpun
I’m not longer here or lilya4ever
Not the same, at all, but "Helter-Skelter 2012" is also another good movie to watch.
Kids Return(1996)
Blue Spring(2003)
The Blue Light(2003)
These films are classic Japanese teenager films with a somewhat similar atmosphere.
i remember my 4th birthday me and my family were on our way to dinner and i was looking out the window wanting nothing for than to open the door and get rolled over by the next car
i don’t know why i wanted it so bad, i even knew in the moment that it wasn’t exactly a normal thing to feel
i think i’ve been staring out that window ever since, thats about where i realized the day is lonely as it is long, no matter how many people look at you its the space in your head you should always be trying to fill
this movie is wonderful in so many ways, more people should watch it. cant wait to rewatch it again when i have free time
I love the music for this film, I dont care if lily chou chou isn't real she's touched my soul.
brilliant analysis mate, I wished more people knew about this film.
This movie hit me so hard, deff one of my favorites of all time. Plus the music is gorgeous n really gets the "ether" thing through, even by itself
The easthetic of this movie are amazing, everything contribute to create that dreamy athmosphere, the visuals and Salyu's ethereal voice. I have been listening to her since I watched this movie in 2001.
thank you for explaining this, when i first watched the film, i was deeply confused but amazed by everything happening at once. i told myself i can tell its a good story, i just dont get it yet. now here i am looking for the explanation and i found it! i can watch this film again, its not going to be like the first time i watched it, but its gonna be more better with a backround. subscribed
bro i watched this movie and was confused after and then i cried like an hour later after thinking about it again
This film is amazing, it tackles so many topics so well, and the cinematography is beautifal.
i love the intro !!! i think the message is similar to evangelion (also the social context and all) but it's more humanistic in my opinion, and closer to the reality of some people nowadays: music, art and movies have the power to make you feel understood and ease some of the pain away. relationships also have that power and are very important, but people make mistakes and sometimes they just can't grasp how their actions affect others, because they're consumed by pain/some other overwhelming feeling, and miscommunication makes everything destructive. being alone for a while and trying to understand how your own mind works is not necessarily a bad thing. evangelion is probably on the other end of the spectrum trying to warn viewers about the dangers of escapism through media consumption and how avoiding people is bad for the individual, which is a problem of its own too but oh well. balance is key i guess
The beauty of this movie can defeat anything and everything in the world
thank you so much 4 this video, it cleared up so many things i was confused about
I watched this ages ago, I still think about the beautiful tall green fields they stood in from time to time.
Gorgeous soundtrack, Hikousen was my favourite song from the album.
If you're a fan of the OST give some Akino Arai songs a go, though not exactly the same they have that 'ethereal' quality to them. A bit like Bjork. I'll link a couple of my favourites below.

Watched it first time when I was 16. Such a great movie. Im 39 now and I still come back to it with memories and to Lillys music from time to time. Great movie
how the life turns after all that time?
Ain't no way you 39 you are 13 max
Can you do another one of these videos but with Fallen Angels by Wong Kar Wai I tried watching Chungking Express to make more sense of it but I feel like there are some missing pieces.
That's a great suggestion actually !
I love Chungking Express .. but somehow fallen angels just didn't work for me ..and I know for a fact that i didn't understand it entirely, which is why i felt that way... so an analysis on that would be really great, i agree !
God i wish he could just say lily chou chou right
same i stopped watching the video affter 3 minutes because of it
can someone give examples of the “singular incidents that are too disturbing to mention”? I know about the Kobe child murders, idk watching this movie made me realize how unhinged teens were in the 90s
Was that part you mentioned really suppose to reveal who blue cat was? I thought that was when the green apple was shown, which in my opinion is probably a better timed reveal.
Yeah on first watch I thought Yuichi was blue cat until the green apple scene
i personally realised blue cat was hoshino when he mentioned that a girl who he knew since elementary school who liked debussy was how he discovered lily chou chou (aka Kuno, and the guys teased Hoshino for denying that he knew her, and it later showed her playing debussy on the piano)
@@eisaiyoohoothis is around the time i realised too and it made for an interesting watch realising early on he was blue cat and seeing the difference between him online and on the forum with yuichi vs real life with both yuichi and others.
i still wonder whether he used the forum as a true view of himself at that time or just in some twisted way trying to humanise himself and manipulate the people on the forum if you get what i mean? i mean pawning the apple off to yuichi and still overall being a dick at the concert was what made me think that
I can’t be the only one who picked up that hoshino was blue cat when yuichi was staying over at his place.

Ammmaaaaazing review!
This is my favourite movie since I watched it many years ago, like in 2006 or 2007.
Maybe it's not the most dynamic movie, but if you watch with the right mood, and open mind, you enjoy it a lot. Since the first time I watched this movie, I watch the life in a different way, I enjoy music different, and that's why if I feel sad or hopeless, just I watch the movie and I feel calm.
The ether is there, and it's good to see that people like you show how awesome is this movie.
Many other movies from Shunji Iwai are amazing too. The atmosphere that he build in every movie is amazing. Swallowtail Butterfly, Love Letter, April Story and obviously Hanna and Alice are great too.
And sorry for my bad english.
