I really appreciate the way you explain everything. Your voice is so soothing and helpful. As a new quilter I am learning so much from your explanations. Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words, WillowRose! (love that name!! 💐 Glad you're enjoying my tutorials and learning some new tips. Sure appreciate you following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I'm a newbie that has only done sewing squares together. This will certainly give me some variety! Great info on colors & balance, too. I've already watched it several times. Thanks so much! 😊
So glad you're enjoying these ideas. You'll have fun changing things up a bit in your next quilts! Sure appreciate you following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
You are a GREAT teacher! I have only made a few quilts, but am now retired and first grandbabies are coming. I’ve not made a scrappy 9 patch yet, but have lots of fabric. Now I’m sooo inspired by you. Thank you!!!
Wonderful, Roxanne! You'll have fun making these blocks and those new babies will love having a quilt you made just for them! Thanks so much for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
So glad you enjoy my videos, Belinda! Thanks for you comment. I really enjoy doing quilting tutorials and appreciate viewers like you who follow along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Glad you like it! It helpful to play with fabrics and colors to see what you can come up with. Sometimes you may even find a wonderful surprise in there, too! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
My first time to your channel and WOW! I loved watching your lovely quilt block combinations. I already was in awe of your nine patch fabric choices - so colorful! Vibrant! But you really blew my mind with the variety of block layouts! I enjoyed this a lot! TFS 💕
Welcome! So glad you enjoyed this tutorial. Combining colors is my favorite aspect of quilting. Then getting to mix it all up is even more fun! These blocks are wonderful to work with. Hope you get to give it a try! Thanks for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Thanks for showing the process of choosing your blocks. As a newer quilter, this always puzzles me. I’d love to see how you chain pieced those squares to end up all three rows hooked together.
I like doing the split 9 patch. I made one for my grandson using solid blacks, black and white prints, gray prints and solids with a red centre. It looked striking and was a masculine quilt. I like the one with the corner stones the best.
Love that color scheme, Doreen! Those colors look fantastic together. I agree about the corner stones. They create what looks like a small 4-patch between the other blocks. It's creates lots of interest! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Louise I want you to know that I'm very anxious to start making these blocks. You really did a great job of showing me how versatile these Scrappy blocks can be. Thank you so much. I'm hoping to also do Scrappy christmas and other seasonal blocks too.
So glad this video helped, Lili! Colors are great fun to work with and with a few guidelines you love the results. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Awesome! Thank you, Julie! There's a lot to think about in this video. There are a few more D9P blocks I'd like to do. This is a fun way to use up lots of those extra charms! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Great layout visuals for my logical brain!! I overthink things and get myself wrapped around the axel and have paralysis at my machine. THANK YOU!! Excellent tutorial ❤
I totally understand! It takes some practice but with just a few guidelines you'll find it gets much easier. Then you'll add your own spin and make it your own. Have fun playing with color! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I should have said that I have a whole bunch of Japanese furoshiki to turn into a disappearing 9 patch of some kind. This video is so helpful for designing my furoshiki quilt.
YOU are so very clever and creative. I love 9 patches too. I love the idea of the center matching, so that it carries through. I'm going to try that next time. You explain and demonstrate very well. I enjoyed your positivity. Huggles Always 💖🤗🍀🎉🧵🪡✂️✨🦓Liz
Thanks so much, Liz! I'm glad you'll be trying the focal center squares. It really makes a nice design across your quilt. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Love all the options. I will be cutting up my leftover fabrics into 5”squares and 2 1/2 “ strips. Easy to store. Ready to sew. So many possibilities. I use a quilt as you go method so the square format fits right in !
Thanks awesome, Saundra! You'll be using lots of that leftover fabric for some beautiful new quilts! Thanks so much for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I really like all the variations that you have shown. I have a lot of fabric to choose from but I prefer a more "controlled scappy" layout so this video allows me to have multiple options. THANK YOU❣️
I loved the dominant pink design which I can see going all the way from top right corner to lower left corner. I don’t know how I always wind up with one particular color that I have way more than the others. That will definitely use them up. Thank you for your ideas. New subscriber.
I totally agree, Betty! Using a dominant color really tones everything else down. This is probably my favorite and I think I'll be making one, too. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I have never done Disappearing 9-Patch, so thank you so much for the inspiration! I think I like the ladder-strip down the middle the best, although I know that would change depending on my fabric.
As always, thank you for all the helpful tips and tricks. Another way to cut 2 (or more) blocks would be to cut the 4 outer edges of one block then move the centre piece over from one block to another 🥰
Great tip, Lesley! You make it so easy!! My switching back and forth must have made you smile. 😊 Thanks so much for watching and keeping an eye on me! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Perfect timing on this video. I have enough 9 patches sewn together for a queen size, but I am not happy with the way they look with just sewing them together. I have been watching videos on disappearing 9 patch options. I love the way you do it. I have also bought a bunch of fat quarters in various colors and prints. You have given me new motivation to get back to my WIP.
Glad you enjoyed it, Sue! There are so many different options you could make quilts for weeks! 😊 Thanks so much for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
You are so welcome, Julie! This was fun trying out all those different blocks! There may be another later this year. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Yay! Now there's no excuse not to use them!! Can't wait to hear about all those new scrappy quilts. 😊 Check out this week's video for more scrappy ideas!! Thanks for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
This is the first time I have watched one of your videos and I learned so so much about color. It has always held me back which is why I have always bought precuts. this is the first time i understood what to look for in colors. some people are just gifted when coordinating colors. I am not. But after your video I know i will become better. It is frustrating to love fabric and colors but don’t know how to make them shine and pair well. Again thanks so much I am going to save this video for future reference. Your enthusiasm is contagious
Yay, that makes me happy to hear. You definitely know more about color that you realize. Think about when you're shopping for a new top or dress, you know exactly what you like. You just need to get used to seeing fabric in small pieces rather than getting overwhelmed by an entire bolt on the shelf. Simply get up close and see what you like best. There are probably some of your favorite colors or patterns and designs included. Once you realize some basics about working with lots of color your confidence will increase. Your on the right track! Thanks so much for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I love doing random disappearing 9 patch. I also love to use 6 inch blocks that I have cut from left over fabric from another quilt. Love your ideas about colors and values and sewing that they are kept together. I make a lot of care quilts of different sizes. Just found your sight. I subscribed and liked. Thank you
Thanks so much for subbing, Mary! Glad you enjoyed this video. That's wonderful that you are able to make care quilts as they are so appreciated. Sure appreciate you following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Glad you think so, Phyllis! It's fun to play with color placement. Plus it's great the way these blocks can be move around. Lots of ideas to work with! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
So glad you enjoyed this, Pam! This is just a place to start as there are so many more options! Hope you get to give one a try. Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I was making a Disappearing 9-patch starting with 7" squares in shades of blues to blacks with stars and galaxy prints. I ended up making all the blocks with white sashing between the squares, cutting them in to quarters, but then I mixed ALL of the pieces, making sure no two patterns touched, instead of sewing the original 4 back together. So all the blocks in the 85" square quilt are different. I wish I could send you a picture. It came out great.
That sounds incredible, Kathy! The white sashing certainly must have made a wonderful contrast throughout your quilt. Congrats on a great job! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
That's a wonderful idea, taking the standard nine patch and creating so many different options! I love that! However, Im wondering if you could make a video using the standard nine patch, but cutting it on the diagonal? Would that work, or would it mess up the seams? I'd love to see what you come up with! You have a great talent for using colour and contrast in such wonderful ways to create interest in your quilts, and yet they're still calming and pleasing to the eyes... that's not always easy when making scrappy quilts! 😊
So glad you enjoyed my quilting tutorial, Pamela! Yes, a diagonal 9-patch will be on it's way in the near future! These are great blocks to play with and it'll be fun to see how the diagonals turn out. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I'm a Fat Quarter collector, Mary! These are all cut from fat quarters I've used in previous quilts. Using fat quarters lets me have lots of fabrics to use at once instead of buying yardage. Instead of using one yard of red fabric, I'll use 4 red fat quarters and mix it up. I've been doing this for years so I have quite a variety of pieces. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Don't want you to go either, if I could save time in a bottle! Sometimes we never get full enough, or tired of what we are experiencing, you, and Jim Croce, could listen a very long time! Happy your here, and sharing your craft, hope you stay a long time, and Jim, well perhaps he he will be singing in eternity, seems like he was gone to soon! Happy healthy long life !! lis
Welcome, Jeni, thanks for subbing! It's great to have you following along. My fabric go-to is the fat quarter which is where I'll direct you. Below is a playlist of tutorials that I made with fat quarters but yardage will also work just fine. There are some fun ideas that may get you inspired to use up your fabric! Enjoy! ua-cam.com/play/PLDqkQjWsSDqmnvbi_Y9TwS4cdFra0WP1k.html Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I also have sewn together fat quarters to make a 9 patch and just kept cutting the blocks left over the same until they were the size I wanted. That was fun! Ty for more inspiration ❤
Looking at the cut pieces can be deceiving. As long as the two small strips are sewn on first, the long strips will fit from edge to edge. It's like putting a puzzle together. 😊 Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
You are correct msjamie. The top and bottom will hang off 1/2 inch on each side and need to be trimmed. Line them up matching the seams of the center block. This is because there are two more seams in the piece they are being attached to.
Love the ideas, unfortunately, my brain doesn't work like this. When I do a quilt from scrap fabrics, I just make the quilt. I can't do patterns. But I have some really nice quilts. They are not show quilts by any means. They are created to keep us warm. They are pretty to me and serve their purpose.
Totally understandable, Kimberly! Scrappy quilts are actually new to me as I rarely had small scraps as I use lots of big blocks. Then finally I piled some bits and pieces together and started sewing them into long strips. When those strips were then sewn together it looked awesome. Patterns certainly aren't a requirement. It's actually more fun to come up with your own method that you enjoy. Kudos for finding what works for you! What's important is that you're creating beautiful quilts!! Thanks so much for following along. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Chain stitching and pressing as I go really help me keep everything together, Diann. The chain stitching keeps the blocks in place while I press the first seams. Then the last two seams fall right in place as long as the first seams are pressed in opposite directions. Then when the block is cut and re-pieced you should be okay. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I rarely know in advance where I’ll be placing things. Since I don’t stitch in the ditch when quilting, I just press everything open. I do need to be more careful when seams meet but that hasn’t been a problem so far!
My machine is a 2002 Husqvarna Designer II which was made for quilting. It's been great for all these years though I may be looking for a new one sooner than later. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
@@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise ty, are you looking now for one? I am looking for one and am so not which one to get! It can’t be over 1300.00. But preferably under 1000.00
I know you didn't ask me but i have a juki hzl-dx7 sewing and quilting machine and i absolutely love it. I only wish it had a larger throat area. It's 8 inches but i do 100in by 100 quilts so I'd eventually like more room. I also would like the larger bobbin option. Those are my only wishes of having something different. @Tlea064
That will definitely be a future video tutorial, Laura! There are some fun ways to get some very interesting results. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I need to understand your chaining. I get the 3sers of the 3 in a row but at that point in your video you show the rows basically brought together with a tacking at each end of the middle square. Is that for lesson purpose? If not,why don’t you just sew the rows together? Not questioning your teaching etc just trying to understand.
Take a look at this point ua-cam.com/video/t75jugW0LoY/v-deo.html in the video, Sherry. I think this is what you're referring to. First I sew two squares together but don't cut the threads at the end. Then I place the next two squares in my machine and continue sewing the next two leaving about 1/4-inch. Those thread hold these two sewn blocks with the first two. That's how I chainstitch. Next I do the same with the third pair of squares. With three rows of two squares chainstitched, I cut the only the last threads to remove what I've sewn together. At that point I return to the top sewn pair and sew the third square to the end. Without cutting any threads, I continue the same for the last two rows. This gives me three rows or three blocks that are sewn together and are also joined by the chainstitching. The advantage is that the rows will already be in place and ready to sew. Joining the squares this way is also know as 'webbing' or web stitching' by some quilters. Chainstitching is a time saver so you sew quickly without always stopping to cut thread. That means it also saves thread . I hope I answered your question. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Good question, Margaret! Needless to say, my family has plenty of quilts to curl up in. 😊 I donate lots of baby quilts to local shelters and recently contacted Project Linus about their donated quilts to children's hospitals. My goal is to find where they are needed. Many years ago I used to sell a few quilts at local fairs but most people don't realize the actual value. So I'd rather give them to a good cause. Besides it makes me very happy to be able to donate them. Sure appreciate you following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Love love these 9 patch possibilities! Thanks so much!

How about doing the 4-at-a-time HSTs-sew around tge outside and cut twice on the diagonal...
Absolutely, Barbara! Diagonal options will be coming soon. 😊 These D9P are great to work with. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting,

Below is a playlist of tutorials that I made with fat quarters but yardage will also work just fine. There are some fun ideas that may get you inspired to use up your fabric! Enjoy!

In the last design you showed, if you sew the big block in the middle to the two sides how can the top and bottom fit? Just a beginner here sorry 😊
Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
Happy Quilting,

Can someone explain the difference between cotton and batik’s
❤❤❤
Thanks so much for following along, Debbie! Happy Quilting,

I am always concerned about nesting seams. Sometimes when I do the disappearing 9 patch, I really get confused.
Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I rarely know in advance where I’ll be placing things. Since I don’t stitch in the ditch when quilting, I just press everything open. I do need to be more careful when seams meet but that hasn’t been a problem so far!
May I ask what sewing machine you use? Please !
My machine is a 2002 Husqvarna Designer II which was made for quilting. It's been great for all these years though I may be looking for a new one sooner than later. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting,

@Tlea064

What would it be if your cut is on the diagonal…. 🤔
That will definitely be a future video tutorial, Laura! There are some fun ways to get some very interesting results. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
I was thinking the same thing, cutting on the diagonals in a big “X”. Also cutting on parallel 45 degrees for 1/2 square triangles. Hmmmm!
Happy Quilting,
Lea Louise
Brita Nelson has a huge amount of disappearing blocks.
Yes, she does, Diann! They are definitely a favorite of hers. Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting,

What do you do with all your quilts?
Good question, Margaret! Needless to say, my family has plenty of quilts to curl up in. 😊 I donate lots of baby quilts to local shelters and recently contacted Project Linus about their donated quilts to children's hospitals. My goal is to find where they are needed. Many years ago I used to sell a few quilts at local fairs but most people don't realize the actual value. So I'd rather give them to a good cause. Besides it makes me very happy to be able to donate them. Sure appreciate you following along! Happy Quilting,
