I am a retired science and technology teacher (also raised on a farm or ranch) and I whole-heartedly agree with your assessment of book knowledge-that it is a good initial source, but that it must be tested in a hands-on environment! I’ve also read many scientific papers published as true accounts which were pure garbage with no evidence presented whatsoever. These books you love are among my favorite books also. I have also read and reread these types of books from the time I could read books like Wildwood Wisdom, Daniel Beard's books, books from the Fur, Fish, and Game on trapping and snaring, and others of this type were either purchased, or more likely, checked out from the school libraries time and again. I have collected and cashed in many pop bottles to save enough money to buy those books from the Fur, Fish, and Game magazine. My dad and his brothers were hunters and woodsmen of the first order, their dad, my grandfather was Cherokee and many of the “survival” techniques I learned from them was replayed over and over as I accompanied them into the woods and mountains. Much of what I learned in the mountains of California and the woods and hills of Oklahoma I used during 2 tours of duty in the jungles of VietNam as a Marine NCO. One of the most valuable skills I had was the ability to “see” what was normal in nature and what was not-this skill came only from years in the woods and watching my Dad and uncles ”see”. Please present more of your favorite books.

Mors, as a kid growing up in Alaska, my favorite book was "Northern Bushcraft". Before that, it was Bradford Angiers "How to survive in the Wilderness". I've owned both since the eighties, and as a northern kid, nothing else came close.

Mr. Kochanski, if you are looking for a more concise book(let) on knots, might I suggest Knots and Splices, by Des Pawson. It was copywritten in 2001, by Prospero Books. Like you, I bought it at a young age and digested it constantly. It's about a handspan square, and as thick as my thumb, with amazing descriptions and photographs. I highly recommend it. Thanks for sharing some of your library with us. Take care.

As well as more of his favourite woodcraft books, it would also be interesting to see if there are any works of fiction Mors would recommend for their bushcraft content? I remember being bitten with the bushcraft bug at an early age (long before I knew that was what it was) by reading of the adventures of Natty Bumpo, Huck Finn, The Swiss Family Robinson etc. I'd certainly be very interested in such a list from Mors, although I may be alone in this!

For a short, inspiring read, check out '48 to Alaska and Back, the journey and the journal'.
It's a fictional story with adventure and soul.
