    Zeus's cross-dressing line is a reference to a Norse story where the king of the frost giants stole Mjölnir and would only return it in exchange for Frigga's hand in marriage. However, Loki devised a plan to have Thor impersonate Frigga and go to "marry" the guy. Once the king brought Mjölnir out as a flex, Thor grabbed it and murdered everyone in the hall.

    • @Crazael
      @Crazael 2 роки тому +16

      Wasn't it Freya that he wanted? And when they asked her to do it, she flatly refused, which is why they had to do the whole crossdressing thing. It's a great story if anyone ever wants to check it out. Thor spends the whole wedding party breaking almost breaking character, leading to Loki having to desperately play it off as wedding jitters and such. Like, Thrym, the Frost Giant king who stole the hammer, gets a look a Thor's burning red with rage eyes and comments on them, and Loki sweeps in and explains that she's been so anxious and excited, she hasn't slept for a week.

    • @lordmortarius538
      @lordmortarius538 2 роки тому +9

      It was Freya, the most beautiful of all the gods. Frigga was Thor's mom and Odin's wife. Other than that, accurate. There's even a Valkyrie Bride skin in Smite for Thor dressed in a wedding gown, it's great.

      Yes Loki was a master Flyter but, I feel like everyone is forgetting that he's also listed as the only one who could beat you while making you laugh at his destruction of you. So basically Zeus was saying that Thor couldn't be that funny so he needed a better ghost writer, AKA Loki.

    Ragnarök is not the destruction of Asgard (even though it is in the movies) but originally the "End of the World" and the " Gods-death", basicly he is saying "i'll bring ragnarök to you" aka "'I'll kill you all"

    • @ImBadtheonly
      @ImBadtheonly 2 роки тому

      @@brothersgt.grauwolff6716 To be very exact, Ragnarök was more about the history and the downfall of the gods with the event of ragnarök itself beeing the fight between gods and giants in which wake the whole world is destroyed. Only the very last chapter is about a recreation of a world, but it is less about a life/death cycle. Althoug there is this interpretation of Rudolf Simek with life/death. The more likely and commonly interpreted "meaning" is more of a destruction of the world and its evil. The recreation afterward is like the christian heaven without evil and therefore the end. As without evil there is no need for a ragnarök anymore.

    I read tons of Greek and Norse mythology growing up.
    Charon was the boatman for the River Styx. If the living didn’t put coins under your eyes after death, you wouldn’t have the fare to cross the River into Hades.
    The 3 headed dog was Cerberus. It’s a modern day word in the IT field now too, called Kerberos, basically like a server that authorizes your identity.
    One slight correction - Cronus was given a prophecy that one of his children would rise up and overthrow him, as he had done to the Titans.
    He actually swallowed his children whole, didn’t eat them. Rhea hid Zeus and gave Cronus a stone wrapped in cloths to eat.

    The Greece GDP dropping line was about the modern day Greek economic problems. Greece had massive expenditures, massive social programs, and the only way they could afford that was massive debts they were racking up. The EU was not happy with giving Greece even more money so they initially said they were not going to bail Greece out. Russia offered to help Greece out because at that since (2012 ish) Russia had a lot of money from seeling their oil and gas). Eventually Germany bite the bullet and bailed Greece out because they didn't want to let Russia bail Greece out.
    The Greek economic crisis happened around the same timg this video came out, so I always thought that was a bar for the modern day Greek GDP crisis.
    It was an interesting time and it was just a few years ago. Worth skimming the Wiki article about it at least.

    Well, it's kinda hard to pin down when people first started insulting eachother in rhyme, but there are versions of it all over the place and many of them go back hundreds if not thousands of years. Usually, it's a form of pre-fight ritual meant to show off cleverness and quick wit. Though sometimes it is the fight, or it's treated more as a game than something for combat.
    While Norse longboats weren't super big, no one else was building ships that were much bigger. They also had keels that let them sail in the North Sea much more effectively than basically anyone else, and they had shallow drafts that let them sail right up most rivers and strike deep into the heart of Europe.
    The "Viking Funeral" thing never happened. While Viking kings were often buried with their boats, they were buried. Not sent out to sea and burned. There is literally zero achealogical evidence for that and only one source mentions anything like it, and it wasn't even talking about the Vikings. And was almost certainly exaggerated.

    Edit: He didn't miss the flyte line.
    One of the stories in Norse mythology was the tale of Loki's flyting. A flyting is an exchange of personal insults. In the story, Loki takes personal shots at every one of the gods in Odin's court. Accuses Odin of effeminacy by using magic (in Norse culture magic was a woman's work, not a manly thing), accused Frey of buying his wife, Thor of cross dressing (the Lay of Thrym), it goes on. The upshot of it all was that it pisses off the gods so much that they end up catching him, chaining him, and positioning a snake dripping poison onto his face until Ragnarok.

    so I basically know about Norse mythology mostly from the Thor movies, and I know about Greek mythology from research I did plus the show Atlantis got me into it again at some point. So I came into this erb biased towards Thor. like he said, "you shapeshifting rapist," there was actually a specific story where Zeus shapeshifts into a swan to rape a woman, shit like that is why I'm against Zeus specifically, though I like other Greek figures like Athena. but in the Thor fandom (again, the movies), Thor has a good reputation wrt women, and I've also read a bit about women Vikings having had a good standing in Viking culture, so that right there makes me pretty biased towards Thor. this rap battle basically solidified that for me.
    wrt are the Thor movies accurate to the mythology, I know there are some changes, at least. I actually watched this one video by Jessie Gender when she talked about Loki in which she gets into the different versions of Loki, starting with the original mythology, then going into the comics and movies. I thought it was quite good, so maybe it'd give you a good insight into the differences…

    Not to sound like I'm trying to educate you (you sound like you know this shit), but just going over some points in case anyone else wants more context. I love mythology so, yeah.. long read, but if interested, might be worth reading?
    "I'll put your crossdressing neck in a noose," others have already stated the story of Thor crossdressing (which is hilarious cause Thor is like THE MAN in Norse mythology, just a HUGE dude with a beer gut, muscles, rockin beard, etc), the noose parts from a tale of Odin hanging himself from a tree to gain knowledge.
    "I'm a bull getting bitches with my swan shlong."
    Two references to two times Zeus seduced two different ladies by shapeshifting into different animals.
    The story of Europa (which we get the name Europe from) he turned into a bull. I think it was Leda that he turned into a swan for, which he had sex with her (as a swan, still) and she wound up laying an egg (either one egg with twins or two eggs with a twin in each) which produced Helen (Helen of Troy) and her sister.
    "Allow Thor to retort you shapeshifting rapist," majority of Zeus-specific tales are about him transforming to seduce/rape women. From what was previously mentioned to golden rain to an injured animal to get with Hera (which he didn't even need to do cause she was down for it, so he literally did it for his own kicks), to his other sister, Demeter (which resulted in the birth of Persephone), etc. Like very few stories of him having sex with women involved consensual sex.
    Ragnorok is more specifically the end of days, final battle of the Gods which all but a few end up dying. He's basically telling Zeus to keep his guard up cause Thor's about "end this man's whole career."
    "You tongue-kiss your sister." Probably a specific reference to Zeus' marriage to Hera, his sister. But could also be a reference to his raping of his other sister, Demeter. Not to mention his previous relations with... I think aunts or cousins? Metis, Themis, Mnemosyne, Eurynome, Leto, and couple others.
    Thor's comment about Zeus being ruthless to humans. Zeus never liked humans. The story of Prometheus basically shows Prometheus (who despised Zeus) constantly going behind his back by not only creating humans in their own image, but also giving them knowledge, tricking Zeus to accept bones and innards as sacrifices instead of meat, and giving humans the invention of fire. Zeus often took anger out on humans at different times, often at best was just very neutral towards them. The only time he gave a damn about humans is if he was trying to get with one.
    Zeus mentions his lightning bolts (hence the battle between the two, Zeus' bolts vs. Thor being God of Thunder), but another interesting part about the weather is that Thor has control of weather. It's not just lightning, but he could create storms on a whim.
    "make like your daddy and swallow my babies." Chronus (often mistaken for Chronos) was told that one of his children would overthrow him. So whenever Rhea gave birth, Chronus would immediately swallow the newborn whole (some tales just say he eats them). Rhea eventually gives birth to Zeus and hides him while exchanging him out for a rock (hence why most say he swallows them whole, cause otherwise how would you not noticing you're biting into a rock, even IF you were a god). Zeus was the one that freed his siblings and overthrew Chronus and the rest of the Titans to create the era of the Olympians.
    Interestingly enough, Zeus was told one of his own children would do the same thing - around the time he was with Metis - so he wound up tricking Metis while she was pregnant with a competition that involved her turning into a fly - so Zeus swallowed HER whole to prevent her from giving birth. Metis did give birth and due to her forging armor and a sword, causing Zeus to have a massive headache, he had Hephaestus crack his skull open - from the emerging wound, Athena comes roaring out. Athena never overthrew Zeus and would go onto actually becoming his FAVORITE child.
    "Take these drachma for your eyes." Yeah, you basically nailed it. The specific part is most of the time, the coins were placed over the dead's eyes. Sometimes it'd be under their tongue. Not sure why Charon needed money to ferry the dead across Styx, I can only imagine he'd need plenty of stops at Starbucks for the coffee for his overtime shifts.
    Cerebus/Cerberus is usually depicted as male. This line was specifically a means to diss Greek Mythos. Like from Thor's perspective, this magnificent creature that's so ferocious that its sole responsibility is to prevent anything from entering/escaping the realm of Hades, is just a little bitch.
    Like, if you're a student of mythology both sides here are just fucking going full force with all the references and I love it. I'm sorry if I overstepped your or anyone else's toes, but I could talk forever about this stuff and I wanted to include more context for anyone that may be interested.

    You're thinking of Rome with the idea of expansion too far, too fast contributing to the fall.
    The line is actually from a way more recent economic collapse of Greece between 2008-2015, due to a lack of productivity and rampant tax evasion that went unpunished, only compounded by them joining the EU/Eurozone to try to hide the problem until it became too big to hide anymore and they defaulted on a €1.6 billion loan. Sadly, when they were bailed out by the EU authorities, it was really only to make sure Greece paid their loan back, not to get Greece back on their feet again. Of course, they're not making things better by telling the world they've gotten back on their feet when the only ones making money in Greece right now are banks and rich hedge funds.

      The whole "viking funeral" thing was mostly just an invention. (Kind of like the horned helmet thing was an invention.) The Scandinavians of that time mostly used burial mounds, like the burial mound/barrow of Bjorn Ironside in Sweden. They did use ships, but it was less often than you might think, and they didn't burn the ships. They buried them, like the Ladby ship in Denmark.
