Angry Farmer Killed My Car Camper?! Wild Camping Disaster

  • Thanks for watching my video, this was a truly horrible experience. One we'll never forget. I would hate for this to happen to anyone else, so please spread the word - if you have any friends of family that love camping or have a camper van. Avoid this place!!
7 days into our Wild and Car Camping Snowdonia adventure, we decide to head into the heart of Snowdonia - coming from Barmouth where we had just waited a whole day/ night to get new tyres fitted. We arrived around llyn Ogwen at about 4.30/5pm, looking on google maps we found a quieter nearby lake with a long track up to it, with cars parked at the bottom on google maps, and the only sign saying to not block the gate (which we didn't) it seemed totally fine to head up there for the night, and to leave the car where it was.
    This was not the case.
On our walk up, we saw the man we had seen at the car with his tripod, on his way back to his car. So as soon after we left on our walk, we were the only car parked there . The gate was only so wide, so we made sure that even with a car on the other side there was enough room for any vehicle that could fit through the gate, to be able to get past us. There was over a gate and a half's width of room leading up to the entrance of the gate.
There was no other reason for such an act of violence, the car was not searched, there was lots of camera gear untouched and not looked through. The gate was not obstructed so to me there is no other answer than that somebody who knew we were wild camping up there, didn't like it. (Probably because people have littered in the past :@ it all comes back to litter doesn't it! )There were only two people that saw us, one being the farmer who hearded his sheep in at sunset the night before. Who even sounded angry when he was just shouting at his dogs. We heard the same voice shouting on the way back to the car. We didn't think anything of it at the time, but now we think he was either warning whoever was carrying out the act, or just shouting and sort of cheering us as were coming back to the car, just to rub it in a bit more. As the dry patch shown in the video had not been there long.
So if us Wild Camping up there on a weekday, in less than ideal conditions (a clear sign we're not there to party) is enough for someone to do that. I fear for anyone else camping around there, and definitely anyone who decides to park up for the night where we left the car, maybe to do some night photography or for a night walk. I'm just so glad we weren't car camping.
Don't let this discourage you, It hasn't me! it's just the actions of one, Be safe out there ♥
Looking forward to a winter camp soon! I hope everyone is happy, healthy and having a good day ☺
Take care and enjoy nature ✌

I want to reiterate some points that were not made clear in the video.
I'm not "naming and shaming" anyone as the track leading up to the lake is owned by the power and water company and there are a few farms nearby.
This was a crime motivated by anger as more time was taken to destroy the car than to look through it - the go pro was still in the glove box which was massively on view if someone had the motivation to look Inside it. The car hadn't even been unlocked at the back or passenger side and nothing was looked through or stolen Inc lots of camera gear in the back of the car.
To anyone thinking I'm in the way, have a look at when the breakdown truck was parked parallel to me, there was still such a vast amount of room left over.
Also If I was in the way do you think that logically the tactic would be to strand the car for the whole next day?
The other car had moved way before sunset - when the sheep came in (we saw him leave) but even so, a hgv sized vehicle/ sheep truck could have still fit between us both, with room to spare. So once the other car had moved, there is just absolutely 100% no way any access was blocked, for any sized vehicle wanting to back up to the gate. This is why I parked nearest to the road to be considerate of this. As the track leading to the lake was narrow and broken and would have only fit a small van down it, so the only access for a large vehicle would have been to back up to the gate. I thought about all this before parking there, as I live in the country myself.
We were heckled on the way back down to the car, a frantic strange shouting was happening at one of the farms over the way - either at us or to warn someone we were coming back. We didn't think much of it at the time untill we saw then damage. We felt a bit intimated at the time, and thought how odd it was.
Ozzie also was scared and refusing to move as we neared the car (which we never does) so he obviously sensed some kind of danger at the car.
No one passed us in the morning going up to the lake, so whoever left that dry patch in the morning was the perpetrator. Whether it was a quad or a regular vehicle.
Who else would have stopped on a barely visible pull in on an A road, on a rainy weekday morning to just damage a car for no reason and not look through it?
Somebody that is angry. As people have said in the comments, they have parked there many times, and so had the local photographer we encountered whilst getting our stuff together.
He probably took one look at the messy ass car and presumed we would leave rubbish, as I'm sure countless inconsiderate people had done over lockdown.
The only person that saw us was a local farmer, who didn't see our tent because it was behind a big rock. So clearly when he saw that the car was there in the morning, he felt annoyed and angry that he hadn't seen it and moved us on last night. When he came into view we purposely moved away from the tent and acted as though we were just there taking photos.
And finally if it was a sheep truck that dropped the sheep off, and they hadn't just come from one of the various other sheep fields, then they clearly were able to get access without the need for the car to be moved.

What happened is just really disgusting human behaviour, I live in Cornwall where were surrounded by farmers and I know what they can be like sometimes. At the end of the day, all they should've done is just left a note on your car or they could come and find you on there quad bike right!? No need to vandalise like that, its just anti social behaviour that is for them to blame and not you! If that was my car i'd be fuming! Shame you had to scrap it, the insurance should cover that usually, only cost £650 max for part worn tyres and 2 new windows fitted :-(

I'm not saying who's at fault hear. Why was the car left unlocked? Insurance does not cover you if you leave your vehicle unlocked also there are criminals who travel to the country side to commit crime usually stealing quad bikes. And breaking into anything that's an easy thouch not stealing the camera gear is easy to explain they are looking for bigger more expensive items the bank card could be used to fill there car with petrol under the pin limit smashing the car just there level of IQ ( zero) . There's a lot of Crime in the county Side but people from cities don't believe there could be with the wide open spaces beautiful views peace and tranquility . I would like to end by saying we are not free to do as we please in the UK (Camping) and we should all get together and voice our message to the government Camping is freedom and we are free.

@@vintagemopeds2767 the car wasn't unlocked? The window was smashed and they didn't bother to look through the car and unlock the doors for a better look. Or even look in the glove box? What part of that makes sense if it was thieves? Even if your a "vandal" that type of person would have had a snoop around don't you think? 🤣 Also I didn't even notice the card was missing for at least 7 hours, and the contactless wasn't even used. Car was scrapped as it’s worth very little - say £500 and the cost of 4 tyres and 2 windows would be more than that. It’s the way it works. Cheaper to deduct your excess and pay you out - simply it’s what you paid for with your insurance.

    • @sahhull

Insurance takes their replacement figures from main dealer prices not the local spanner monkey.
So 4x new tyres from Ditchfinder tyres maybe £50 each, at main dealer will set you back £150 each.
      Again with the windscreen.
      Then theres recovery charges.
Recovery + Fixing it is more costly than the cars value. So they write it off...
Thats why on a 10 year old car a cracked bumper can write the car off, because insurance will replace the bumper at £600 - £1000.
Botch it Johns Paintwork Ltd will plastic weld and fill the crack and spray it for £100

I must have missed something. Did anyone see the farmer do this? If so report it to the police. That close to the road, I would have thought some passing yobs took the opportunity when passing. Very sorry you had such an experience. I think your insurance company was very poor. You should name them so we can avoid them. In terms of the camping spot. I imagine the farmer does get annoyed. A lot of people go there and abuse the place which is infuriating. I have given up wild camping now and use camp sites. Its a shame but so many people are doing it and sadly amongst those are some people that do leave a trace, along with poo near water supplies etc. Its got out of hand.

Unless there was damage that you didn't show, there's something wrong with your insurance company.
Tyres are replaced at your own cost anyway and windscreen replacement is trivial and cheap. A driver's side window for a car of that age could be picked up for a song.
To write a car off for that damage sounds negligent bordering on corrupt, assuming that you described the damage accurately.

Having also been the victim of a 'car attack', but over here in Canada, I would suggest that this was NOT a farmer. There are people all over the world who are just malicious. Our car was parked on the side of a highway, but a quiet one. We own the property there, but can't drive the car in due to the lane being 4x4 only. All 4 of the side windows got smashed out, stuff stolen and the door frames themselves bent when they tried to pry the doors open before smashing the windows, This made the car a write-off for insurance. It was not some angry local. It was malicious vandalism by people who passed by and figured they could get away with it. I think this was what happened to your car as well. If there had been garbage strewn around the road you hiked, where you camped and where you parked, I could understand la local farmer being upset and taking it out on your car. But, this did not look the case. I think it was just a passer by idiot who was looking for something to wreck and thought it was funny. Sadly, there are people like that in the world. The dry spot could have been where they parked, but there could be other explanations as to who had parked there.

That just doesn’t look like the work of a farmer to me, more the work of a few yobboes with nothing better to do. Having said that, your car could very well be an obstacle to a large tractor and trailer which needs a large arc to get in - and particularly to get back out of - that gateway. Also, the land may be owned by a utility company but that utility company will almost certainly have leased the land out to a farmer to ensure it is managed appropriately, so a farmer is paying rent to use the land. It is best to ask a farmer if you can camp - some may say no, but in my experience they really don’t mind if you ask first and they know where you are and can see you are responsible people. It is the courteous thing to do :)

Contrary to popular belief, a farmer does not have a legal right to shoot a dog that is worrying their livestock - what they have is a legal defence. Shooting a dog must be a last resort. Dogs are classed as property so shooting a dog could trigger criminal damage proceedings and the farmer will have to prove he had a ‘lawful excuse’. The farmer will need to show that his sheep were in immediate need of protection, and that his actions were reasonable having regard to all the circumstances. The farmer could also face civil proceeding for damages for the loss of the dog. The farmer will need to prove that the dog was worrying or was about to worry the livestock, and there was no other reasonable means of ending the worrying.

I’m a farmer who probably wouldn’t want someone camping on our private farmland anyway, sorry to say, as our land is not common land, but this is not how most farmers would deal with this.
If your vehicle had been parked annoyingly in our local area I’d have expected one of the farmers to have splattered it with muck or blocked it in with silage bales. I don’t see what a farmer stood to gain from having you stuck around any longer? I was expecting a farmer to have an altercation to prove it was them. Also a bit surprised it was completely written off for tyres and windscreen. 😳
I’d have also moved on the night before when the farmer saw you, as you knew it was not technically legal. You even said were trying to hide the fact you were camping from them.
Still a horrible thing to happened, all the same. Thank heavens for uncles coming to the rescue

We had a problem a few years back for one of our English friends, came down from Cumbria and all, while wild camping in the Brecon Beacons, that was until my other butty, who used to live local got involved. Please don't blame a farmer. What do you mean by 'a farmer'? Numerous people live in the countryside and work the land to make a living, and it's pretty thankless in many ways - they're people you will have been to school with, who you buy things off daily when shopping (at the end of a long chain of transactions, with the farmers getting minimal profit), who constantly have to repair and maintain the styles, paths and access points to the countryside, and clear the litter left, all unpaid. Horrible experience, yes, my heart goes out to you for your loss, but I think the most a 'farmer' would have done is left a note on the vehicle if they were unhappy about it, it wouldn't occur to them to act in such a way and would be as upset as anyone else to see such vandalism. (There's always exceptions, of course. There are a good few "get off my land" types about, but even then would want you to be able to remove yourself, not disable a vehicle.) I'm a townie, though with a farming ancestry. If there's a bit of countryside I'm particularly fond of, I make an effort to say hello to the farmer/tenant, and it usually pays off. The worst experience that happened to me was getting blocked on a farm track by a huge Landrover in a similar situation to yours and being quizzed about my presence. When the actual landowners found out, they were disgusted and invited me to visit the farm for a cup of tea - the 'farmer' who blocked me turned out to be a casual worker from miles away.

I had the same situation, I was "car camping" at one point, just pulled to a place that I used to stay once a while, away from houses, though there was a country road near the place I parked my car, I was sleeping well, and then suddenly I heard this loud bang and the sound of shattered glass... one of my windows was smashed, I then heard a car leaving in a hurry... someone either thought there was no one in the car and I guess they tried to steal whatever they wanted to steal, or simply some angry farmer...
What is wrong with people I am asking, I spent a week in Wales, leaving my car for three consecutive days, in Brecon Beacons on one of the free car parks in the "hills" and the care was fine, I also left a lengthy note stating that the car has not been abandoned and I will be back in three days... If you researched it. You will probably find that the land is owned by the farms and small areas are leased to the utilities.
It is ignorance such as this that turn people and landowners against those of us who do our due diligence and stick to the etiquette of wild camping.

Interesting to see what camping culture is like in other countries. Thank you for sharing your experience.
This always worked for me, and here's why:
Here in Norway, I always talk to the land owner, farmer, or locals before I camp for the night. I introduce myself/us, our good intentions, and if they know a place we can discretely camp for the night. In 7 years of a lot camping, I've gotten good response everytime, except once. When I tell them that I have a tired lady friend coming behind me, they're especially accommodating.
I think it stems from an ancient tradition of hospitality to a wandering stranger. From Illiadic myths, to Havamal, to ancient Hindu stories, they all have the idea that the begging stranger should be elevated above the household, for a moment. The reasoning was that the stranger could be of divine origin. Odin, Jesus, blessing Athenia, etc. We see this live on in modern times. Afghan villagers protecting westerners from Taliban, even if it kills their own. That's praiseworthy.
It was however customary, if the wanderer outstayed their welcome by rudeness or staying more than a day, then the host was allowed to kill the guest.
The tradition of hospitality was quite honourable, jet capricious at the same same time to our eyes. Strange as it may be, this forthright method have worked for me in southern USA, Tehran, Ivory Coast, and at home.
Thank you and have a nice day.

Sorry this happened. I must say I would not have personally parked there at all. The gates had signs on saying no parking, which you read. You assume there was "enough room" if just yourself parked. But often farm access is for vehicles towing trailers and they need the room to turn. That is exactly why that "area" is made in that shape. It also makes it more dangerous for them when exiting onto the busy road as any parked car can block their view turning it into more of a blind junction. This is a problem when the farmer is trying to exit on his own with a big trailer behind (no one to stand outside and direct him or her). They need to see who is coming as early as possible, no blind spots caused by parked cars, or it could easily cause an accident. The best thing to do to find a good spot is to put in more sweat equity. The best spots generally involve more of a hike from the nearest legal parking spot. That farmer overreacted for sure and should not have done that but I can understand why they were angry over it. I also understand you did not mean harm. Maybe learn the more general lesson, rather than just avoiding that spot? Or it may happen again.

Hopefully she learns a lesson but from her attempts at defending her actions it might be that there is still a big gap between reality and her perception of it.

I sincerely hope you are okay?
What a terrible thing to do!
That is a very passive aggressive act.
You have to question what kind of crazy person did that?
