Solo Overnight in the Woods | Tarp Camping in the Rain | Plough Point Shelter

  • Join me for one night of woodland Wild Camping, where I set up a basic Plough Point shelter as my accommodation for the night. As a night of heavy rain sets in, I'm sleeping wild, under the stars and listening to the sound of the rain. Cooking up some vegetarian camp meals, having a cosy campfire (always be responsible and leave NO trace) and sleeping on my ground sheet and insulated mat.

What a breath of fresh air you are, you're super cute, very funny & a lot braver than I am, I have all the gear but just never seem to make it out the door but if people like you & Claire from WildBeare can do it then a 56 year old 6'1" fella should be able to do it too, keep doing what you are doing, 😁

56? I'm going to be 59 in about 30 days my recent trip to the woods was to hammock camp in the rain I'm getting the itch to go again but I don't think I'll be needing my underquilt this time with the daytime temperature being in the upper 80s to lower 90s Fahrenheit.
you'll find a way to get out there 👍

So I sometimes end up camping on the spur of the moment, which means that I always have to improvise a thing or two when I suddenly decide to camp. One time, I was riding my bike down a trail and got curious about the stream and some interesting little paths in and around it. I ended up pushing my fully-loaded bike down the middle of the stream with my ridiculously huge guitar backpack since I also happened to have that with me.
I found a really pretty spot to sit under some trees but my shoes, socks, and feet were sopping wet. Since I know I tend to randomly camp places, I always carry a few minimal things in my pockets and a few even more useful things in all of my backpacks, including my guitar backpack. So I decided to dig a Dakota fire pit, which I did.
The funny part of the story is that I decided I'd dry off my shoes and socks by the fire so I ended up sitting on a plastic trash bag that I had brought with me. I ended up actually cooking my socks a little bit and the fire ended up working so well and being so hot that I had to move away from it. I foraged for edible plants and ended up doing a little cooking over my fire in a beer can that I had just so happen to have emptied into my gullet while sitting by the fire. Part of why I ventured off the beaten path was that I felt like drinking some beer in the wild.
Dakota fire pits are really nice because they only produce a little smoke when you are first getting them started and then the burn hot and clean. When you're done, you can bury the whole thing after you've put it out and it makes good nutrients for the plants in the area. You literally can't tell there was ever a fire there at all, which is especially good since it's illegal both to camp where I did and especially to make a fire, but it turned out that you could only see the fire when you were a few feet away from it because most of the flames stayed down in the hole. In my opinion, the Dakota fire pit is the absolute best way to make a fire in the wild, just don't roast your socks like I did.

I have more random stories than you have time, but one of them was related to the outdoors. I was in the North York moors national park right at the top of a hill and a storm came in, I was the highest thing for miles (apart from the stoners in Middlesbrough) but the storm curved around us like a horseshoe. We didn't get exploded by a lightning strike.
I was quite happy about that.

Its great that so many Women are Wild Camping now and enjoying the Outdoors, we might not have the best weather in the UK and the Land Laws need revised, but it is small enough, that if things turn bad, you are never that far from civilisation, I've camped in the US, different story!

it can be a lighter option with the hammock and tarp (including suspension/ridgeline) plus an underquilt and top quilt (total weight around 2kg)

there is also a butane bug zapper on amazon too as mosquitos dont like butane etc and a cheap battery powered bug zapper bat etc

Only just discovered your channel and what a great video. So good to see you leave no trace and help by taking out someone else's too. The great tit in the tree was an added bonus. Gotta love a plough point shelter. Subscribed!

No not really, bit of condensation though? I did accidentally soak all my prepared fire wood by not having it under enough though 🤦‍♀️ I think they are the Tesco finest ones. ✌️

Great video. I hope it inspires a few more solo campers to do the same.
The weather adds to this as it proves it's not always perfect!
