PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHY THIS SHOW MUST STOP, THE MORE I THINK ABOUT DUNE 2 THE MORE I REALLY LIKE IT. BOLD, ORIGINAL AND ENDLESSLY THOUGHT PROVOKING. REVIEWING ANYTHING OTHER THAN A PRODUCT IS LAME AF.
I’m honestly so glad that these movies exist! They feel like arthouse sci-fi, but with a massive Hollywood budget. I would love to see more like it in the future. 🙌
Been busy as hell, but I did catch this. Best theater film I saw in a while, as a person that likes the book. Greg Frasier is incredible. That relationship with the two leads is a change but I saw what it does for the film version. Religious commentary with the love story was my intellectual hook. Btw I don't watch these looking at Paul as the hero. In fact I knew it going in. So it was interesting to see what he chooses to become to protect his story vs the greater good.
Have not seen this movie yet but I pretty much despise Villeneuve's Dune Part 1. I will go see it just for completion but having read the book since seeing Dune Part 1, my conclusion is that Villeneuve's forte is static visuals and robots; he has no depth, no sense of drama in visuals, and no sense of drama in storytelling as if his emotion palette runs from light blue to blue.
I didn't like the first one and your issues with pt 2 sound similar to how I felt about pt 1. Saw a lot of hype around pt 2 and thought it might be worthwhile but pt 1 also had a lot of love. Probably skipping this movie. Hope all is well, Prof Joe!
I kinda felt similarly about the Witcher show, it and dunes creators both clearly read the source material but what they saw in it wasn’t what I felt like the spirit of the source was. So it felt like a shadow version of the source material. The pacing weirdly felt the same to me as part one where it had its big scenes in the beginning and then it was like a moving concept art book for like an hour then big scene and then conclusion. Even the coliseum scene mostly felt like concept art. Like the pacing was a wide U shape But the art looked so good. It had half of what I wanted out of a dune movie so :/

Villeneuve gave an interview recently saying that dialogue is only important for TV, not film, as film is purely visual. Maybe that's the issue.
Yeah thats not good. I agree with him, but you do need good dialogue, it helps us connect.

Yes but the Witcher books are dumb and dune is brilliant.
Totally agree with you about Arrival. Everyone loves it but I found it to be an aggravating experience. "Do you want to make a baby?" Jesus.
