  • CTAF - another way of saying "Unicom" is a trial starting on the 1st March 2024 within VATSIM USA and it'll be running for up to 6 months...
    In this video, we go through CTAF in as much detail as I can, including:-
    - What is CTAF?
    - How do I find the CTAF Frequencies?
    - Where do I find more information?
    - When do I use the CTAF frequencies?
    - Are there any special rules?
    ... and more!
    For more information, check out the VATSIM AIP here my.vatsim.net/pilots/aip to find airfield information including the CTAF frequencies you may need for flights during the trial

    - BIG HELP! In vPilot, type .ctaf then the airport icao code for example .ctaf KJFK and it will give you the correct CTAF Freq. you will need!
    - Spotted the weird UA-camy glitch at 8:43 - 8:57? Don't worry you haven't missed any detail in the charts 🙂 not sure why it has happened either but probably caused during production/rendering 😂✈️

    Finally!! I've been looking forward to this for years. I love Pilot edge network but it is very limited in the coverage area. Having this on Vatsi is a game changer! I do think though that further training should be available to pilots especially new ones.

      I've suggested that they add it to the auto-clearance if possible so you get your relevant CTAF frequencies for your flight pinged to you on vpilot in text. Probably difficult to implement and maintain though so it'll be charts like the real world

    Great stuff. Quick question tho, ctaf has same freq as primary tower. What happens when Tower is online? Because technically you would announce your position on ctaf for approach (or departure) but the freq is already taken...

    • @BritishAvgeek
      @BritishAvgeek  5 місяців тому +1

      Good question! If Tower is already online for the airport you're flying into you naturally wouldn't be able to use it for an "early call" to say you're inbound. Instead, I'd use unicom 122.800 and announce my position about 15nm away before changing to tower to speak to ATC when establishing on approach

  • @AndrewTowne
    @AndrewTowne 5 місяців тому +1

    I may have missed this, apologies if I did, but what frequency do we use once outside of CTAF range of our airport if the center controller is not online? Would we still use 122.8?

    When there's no ATC and we're on 122.8 and coming up on our destination, should we self-announce our frequency change to the destination CTAF? i.e. "Bar Harbor traffic , N123 15 miles south of Bar Harbor airfield, switching to airfield CTAF, Bar Harbor" or similar?

      They're making it as realistic as it can possibly be... It's a huge change, and needs people to not only understand how it works but use it correctly too for it to be a success.
      I think it's a great idea, especially now they've increased the unicom range massively causing tons of clutter in busier areas like JFK/EWR/BOS/LGA for an example

    • @prymcik1
      @prymcik1 5 місяців тому

      @BritishAvgeek Agreed, however getting people to actually use unicom is not easy. The amount of times I get cut off on localiser by a clueless pilot is astounding.

      @@BritishAvgeekwhile that would offload some of the traffic from unicom - the ones flying into smaller airports, the majority of people are still flying into and out of the big international ones, which don't have a ctaf frequency - so the NY problem will persist, unfortunately

      @@bearded_toad we mentioned it in the video with Special Cases but also what to do if there isn't a CTAF frequency because VATSIM has designated the Tower frequency to fall back as a CTAF if no ATC is online...
