WOW Ken, just awesome that you got one of these gorgeous rare gems! Only black and red ones were exported to the U.S., and only for one year in 1982. I've had a red one (with the luggage rack, same condition as the black one featured here) for a few years now, and I put about 1500 to 2000 miles on it every summer riding the backroads of Northeast Ohio (now has about 8K miles on the clock). I got lucky and found mine on Craig's List, and it was owned and 'babied' by an older couple who owned and collected bikes. The bike is a total trip to ride with the 'ever present' high redline 2-stroke engine, and it turns heads all the time, especially while frequently shifting through all the gears in order to keep it in the powerband. I get so many questions and thumbs up when I stop at red lights, or pull up into a parking lot, and people have offered me thousands for it on the spot (I didn't accept)! It looks kind of like a mini Ducati, and is built like a tank. These were $599 brand new in 1982, and since they didn't sell that well (let's face it, Americans love BIG bikes), they were being deep discounted for as low as $399 at some dealerships, just so they could clear inventory! The small engine on this thing is sweet and well engineered to get 7.1 horsepower. Mine hits 53 MPH flat out... not bad for 49cc's!

In Honolulu about 15-20 yrs ago, they had all kinds of 2 stroke mopeds. The Honda Elite being the most popular. I had 2000 Honda Elite 50 moped. Top speed stock was between 30-35 mph. I changed the cylinder, head, piston/rings, from stock to a Polini Corsa cylinder & piston kit. This cylinder was high performance, it went from the stock 49cc to 72cc, it also raised the compression ratio from the stock 8:1 to 11:1. I also changed the intake to put a bigger carburetor. I put Polini reeds, & an Oko 28mm carb. I changed the final drive gearing from 12:1 to 7:1 gearing. I changed the ramp & weights, & put stiffer springs on on the clutch. I put a Phonger exhaust, that had a huge expansion chamber. A friend clocked with his radar gun he used for nitro rc boats at 74 mph. I would say it was similar in speed & power to my aircooled CR60 I had as a kid, except this had variable speed auto transmission. I could put lighter weights on the clutch & it was like having a stall converter on the tranny, & I could ride wheelies, & do burnouts. It was a big fad over here on the Hawaiian islands, until we had to register, & put inspection sticker on them, along with insurance. It killed all the fun for us moped guys. It was also cheap transportation & you could keep up with cars & not have to ride in the bicycle lane. Some guys even had big bore stroker kits, that the bore & stroke came out to 140cc, & then they would put a 40mm carb off a big street bike. These mopeds could easily do over 100 mph, because they were so light. They even raced them at the 1/4 drag strip on the Makaha west side of the island, but they would only let them run the 1/8 mile. Lots of Japanese people have brought two stroke street bikes over here to Hawaii. I've seen a Yamaha 4 cylinder 500cc two stroke street legal bike, & a Suzuki V-Twin 250cc two stroke street bike not sure if it was street legal. We have a motorcross track here on the North Shore of Oahu. Lots of guys out here still prefer 2 strokes. There are a couple of older guys that ride old school Honda 250 Elsinore motocross dirt bikes.

I had the pleasure of selling these bikes, along with the MT50 and MTX50. We told potential customers that we didn't like to sell them. They were surprised and asked why. We replied that we didn't make a lot of money on them because they were so reliable, we would only see the bike and customer back once a year for changing the gearbox oil, change the spark plug and clean the air filter.
We'd rather sell them a (insert any non Japanese brand here), since they were low quality. We sold Tomos mopeds like that too.
Later on, i raced an MB50 for 5 years. Managed to squeeze around 13 bhp out of the engine (in a class with very limited technical freedom). Never had any major problems with the bike!

This mb5 looks like a scream never knew they could go so well, very restricted in U.K.
I was waiting for the school bus one morning, an I heard this high revving two stroke comeing then it appeared doing thirty miles an hour the max limit in the uk guy flat on the tank then sat up went down five or six gears in thirty ish feet an turned off the main road then flat out in every gear, this happened every morning for a few weeks just had me in stitches.
I was 13 ish an had a dt1 stripped for dirt an field use. Very high geared I weighed 8 ish stone so was going the wrong side of 80 mph on grass.
Watching kaplin cycles I gotta get a DT one way or another.
    Cheers for the uploads.

    50 mph and 10500 RPM??????
Mine I bought second hand in 1985 (UK). It did 30 mph as standard and I don't remember the revs. It had broken reed valves which a friend repaired for me and set me going in mechanics. The faulty reeds had made it rev hysterically so it was great to get that sorted. I put a 60cc bore kit on it which may have taken the speed to 45 mph. I rewired it and a few of us repainted it in black with a yellow frame. A run down bike that was my first. I'm happy to hear such high praise for these from you.
You mentioned Kawasaki, around that time they did an AR50. That was very sleek for a 50cc but sounded like a whirring kitchen cooking implement. The MB50 also had a small fairing like the AR50.
At the time there were a few Honda AP50 bikes still around, and a lot more FS1E and similar Suzuki bikes. There were easily capable of 60mph in good condition. The Honda MT50 was like the MB50 but in trail form. That was replaced by the MTX50, a much larger and softer bike I thought.
I'll need to keep looking out for these bikes. Maybe not... school memories...

I got a brand new Black one when I was 14 in 1982. It was $535 tax paid from Jasper Honda (AL) including an open face helmet. Mine did not smoke like that even after 4,000 miles almost entirely at 10,500 RPMs. I weighed about 115lbs and at 10,500 RPMs it was running 45mph, if you ran it into the red it would bump 50mph on flat ground. Those are not the factory bars. The factory ones were chrome and more like the CB series of full size bikes where the grips were a little higher than the gauges.

    The little engine that could...
The bike and in particular the engine was advanced for its time when it was introduced late 70s. Included a balance gear that softened the vibration from the single cylinder. The exhaust is a popular aftermarket as well as the steering. The original wheels (seen here) tended to produce a rattle as the contact points at the rim became ever so slightly loose. Later in the early 90s Honda used MBX wheels.
Noticed the white wake from the exhaust there. There is a small gearbox driven, external oil pump just behind/below the carburetor that feeds oil drops into the intake manifold at the reed valve. Pump output is fixed as far as I remember but it is actuated by the throttle line. This may need to be adjusted. The carbon build up on the piston crown is going to build up pretty fast.

I used to have a kawasaki AR which had similar styling, a cafe racer look. Wa s monoshock with aluminium frame n wheels, weighed only 150lbs. 6 speed. I got a 93cc kit and BDK racing exhaust, which boosted it to around 20bhp. Titanium sprocket rear n modified carb n manifold etc, porting n exhaust porting etc. I also had a racetrack pro tweak my cdi to give 18,000rpm, instead of stock 12,000rpm, and vastly increasing power and spread of powerband. Usually would kick in 8,000rpm and last until 12,000rpm max, but now extended towards 18k.. Before it got stolen, it did 65mph in 3rd gear at 10,000rpm, before the real strength of the powerband kicked in. In 6th it could do 95mph at 10,000rpm. I never got to take it to its fullest because it got stolen within a week or two once i had my race cdi modded, cuz it attracted too much attention. The 100cc kawasaki versions were called something diferent and even more rare and usually only sold in japan, and were liquid cooled. They could do 110mph stock. With mods, over 120mph easy. The 250cc versions were a similar model. But different name, and could hit 150mph with race mods with over 70bhp. I figure my AR had a 250cc or equivalent bottom end with gearing, as this was a common mod where i live. I paid for it with my own earned summer job money over years n my dad helped me takeit apart to everyboltn spray paint it nice. I made my own blend of a gunmetal grey body with my own blend firecone red for the frame n wheels. It was so beautiful and sounded incredible. My pride and joy, having built it with my dad. RIP Daddy! .

Great post! Yeah, Kawasaki had an AR50 and an AR80, both fun as hell small bikes! They were both 2-strokes, like the MB5, and were rare too. Not too many sold in the USA. In demand now.
