Look forward to the series, I’ve been riding for 40+ years and did my advanced test with the IAM a few years ago and saw improvement in every area not only in my riding but also driving the car. I do lots of Blood Bike miles and am due to undertake more training and another test soon, it’s a three yearly requirement that I think is really worthwhile.

Thanks for producing this series. I'm returning to motorcycles after 10y away and currently going through the Advanced process. These videos are really helpful to compliment the practical lessons, and act as a useful reference to consolidate learning.

I like the new titles. I did a Bikesafe day a few years ago and advanced bike instruction a long time ago, but I haven't ridden my VFR800 for a while now and I realise I've lost my love for biking, so I guess it'll be up for sale. I still enjoy watching other people ride though!

Thanks for this series - now watched the whole set in advance of my IAM assessment ride next week. As a new rider often in the 'consciously incompetent' phase (stopping, cornering, road position etc) I found the instruction style, clear filming, use of drone shots and clever editing made the teaching much clearer and easier to understand. Great content - intelligent observation that's been really beneficial helping me sort out issues and realising every day on the bike is a school-day!

I like your videos. Thank you. After half a century (not kidding) I have taken up motorcycling again early last year. Did about 11000 kms (I'm from The Netherlands) since March. Try to practise IPSGA (made labels with this acronym that are on the dash of my bikes). I do commute on the bike, basically because I believe riding daily is the best way to develop my skills. The only exception is when snow/ice is expected. I'm not that young anymore and neither are my bikes. Parts are hard to come by...

I found your channel just in time!
I'm now 67 and planning to return to motorcycle riding after an absence of 40+ years.
(I had a bike for 11 years and sold my last bike when I found out my eldest son was on the way👀)
Painfully aware that the road environment and volume and nature of traffic have evolved dramatically, and road surfaces deteriorated equally so I had decided to do a 'Return to Riding' followed by an 'Advanced Rider' course to dust off my skill-set and confirm the skills I have used for 50 years of driving.
This series will inform me of what I am in for ahead of time and enable me to more quickly assimilate the information I get and put it into practice. Thank you 👍.
HOWEVER... the only bit of riding gear I still have is a 45 year old leather jacket -that weights a ton and is still serviceable and waterproof as I regularly apply neatsfoot oil.
What I would like to know is what riding gear you personally wear as an ex RTI Police officer. I'd rather buy what I need to stay safe (and dry and warm) than rely on recommendations from someone who gets a bonus on sales.
Thank you in hope and anticipation and keep up the good work and informative content.

Just wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed your posts. Old and new. I was becoming one of those people you mentioned in this post, where I was beginning to lose the enjoyment in motorcycling.
Your teachings, and others I have watched on you tube, have helped improve my confidence and renewed my enjoyment of motorcycling.
I would like to ask your advice on one area of my riding, which I know I struggle with, and which I have not come across any mention of from the people I follow.
This area is concentration. When I am out on the road my mind wanders, it could be the scenery, other interesting vehicles or just something shinny!!
Whenever I mess a corner up it is normally because my concentration has lapsed. Not sure if there is any advice for this but your thoughts are most welcome.
Finally a friend and I are camping around the lakes in July so if we cross paths I hope you’ll allow us to buy you a nice cup of tea and a butty.
I look forward to watching the rest of this series.
    Jay

I'll be watching with interest! I used to ride every day, commuting to work and then RoSPA ride outs/training on a Saturday, at one stage I was putting about 500 miles a week on the bike. I ended up selling the bike for "practical reasons" and although I never made a conscious decision to give up motorcycling, that's more or less what happened, I didn't ride for about 7 years.
Then just recently I've started a new job which involves riding a bike! It's really re-ignited my passion for riding and I'm looking now to get a bike of my own again. Luckily, work required me to complete a Police "non-response" rider's course of 5 days, which served as the best refresher training I could have had after my long absence!
Anyway, I'll definitely be going for either RoSPA or IAM membership when I get my bike sorted so I'll be keeping a keen eye on this series. All the best, keep up the good work!

Good to see you are doing a set of videos for motorcycling after the car based ones. I've been an IAM Observer for the last 22 years, so I'll be interested to see your views/opinions as an IAM examiner. You mentioned learning styles and I've found that associates really do like to watch video footage, that they can go over at their leisure. I've just added a 360 camera to my equipment to try and keep the footage interesting. Riding smoothly and safely you can often get comments that it looks boring. I take that as a compliment and that I'm using the system correctly. Good luck with the series, you've some lovely roads/weather up there but I'd also like to see some on the not so nice days ... like that car one when it was time for Noah's Ark to come out. 😀

Reg you mentioned one thing that made me laugh, "Countersteering." Kevin Ash, the sadly departed motoring journalist, used to have a website and forum where he was very good at interacting with the forum members. Kevin made the statement that whether they consciously knew what they were doing or not, everyone had to countersteer. I countered that for bigger bikes and higher speeds that may be so, but I had been riding for several months and had generally not been happy with what might be described as nicely flowing bends. It had taken a trip of 425 miles up to Applecross to really begin to make me unhappy. Whilst there someone explained countersteering to me which I then practised on the way back feeling much happier.
Off Topic. Did you see the film of the three coppers that went out for a nice ride and ended up in court the other day? If not, Daily Mail "Judge Slams Three Policemen" might help. Whatever they did as police officers, it was certainly not as motorcycle police. Poor positioning with the classic "Darwin Awards" head over the centreline method of cornering. If you are going to go out to be silly but film yourself on a GoPro, does that regrade you from silly to eejit or full on moron?

There is absolutely no reason that your laryngectomy should stop you from taking part in advanced rider training. Your observers and your examiner will make all reasonable adjustments to ensure you are not excluded. I cover disabilities in this video, which, although it covers driving, is also entirely relevant to motorcycling too: ua-cam.com/video/nU0GSXgEf1Q/v-deo.html

Is that the A6 at at Shap that's a lovely piece of road to ride. Advanced riding is like the old saying that Prevention is better than cure. Its certainly much less dangerous and is far less painful. However your remarks from drivers when being done for speeding cos they don't know 'what the speed limit is', as you should know having been a police officer is a load of codswollop as its what many of them say in defence of driving above that limit. They know what they have done. They know the limit and they just try it on as an easy excuse for their blatant bad driving.
P.S. lovely ride, hope to see more but perhaps not when leading an orchestra with ones hands regularly off the bars........please. lol

Hi Reg, I am studying Motorcycle Roadcraft, watching your series of videos and making my rides a way of putting the Sysem of Motorcycle Control into practice. I aim to take the advanced test in the fairly near future. I have been riding and driving for over fifty odd years but have never been of the opinion that I know it all just because I have all those years of experience behing me. My question today is , in your opinion, what else would you suggest I do to help me reach an acceptable standard of competency prior to taking the test? Thanks.

Hi Reg brilliant that you have had enough spare time to do these videos, well done it must be a fair commitment for you.
I would like to ask what your opinion on learner riders staying on their CB license and just redoing CB every 2 years. Would this benefit them or should they perhaps be encouraged to move onto the next stage?
I know many do it because it's cheaper than upgrading to full bike or mod and it's a shame they don't continue to do their tests but I know many riders in this situation and are happy to stay that way. I suppose if they planned their finances better in the long run it would end up cheaper but most of people aren't the best with long term planning myself included 🤣
Also I do think the theory test should be made to be taken on the next renewal to encourage further education of the rider.

    • @RegLocal
      @RegLocal  2 роки тому +2

The CBT is a very basic standard and there is definitely an argument for an alternative to CBT renewal. I would suggest a more challenging road test that would result in a “full” 125cc licence.

At 15.21 you were side by side overtaking a car. Your speed on approach before the overtake was 60 mph and so presuming that same speed for the overtake you stayed only 2 seconds on the wrong side of the road after the overtake and pulled back into your side of the road ahead of that overtaken vehicle,. In that 2 second you would not have been allowing a safe stopping distance to the driver of that car if something un towards had happened to you If your overtaking speed was bout 10 mph faster than his speed, ie he was only doing 50 mph. then in that mere 2 seconds you would have travelled only some 30 ft in front of him when you returned to your own side of the road.
The road was well clear ahead and there was no reason not to continue on that side of the road until you could have returned with greater safety, for him, some few seconds later. However, If you had been travelling any faster ie from that approach speed of 60 mph and then accelerated through the overtake , which you did, then its possible that you might have exceeded the speed limit of that road.
