      This is not an issue with Premiere. It is an issue with how programs read video files and how browsers and platforms decode videos. So essentially you are applying a "fix" with this LUT but the "fix" is only for certain web applications and is actually wrong and will show up as wrong if it goes to broadcast or any other platform that has proper color management.

The exported video was too dark. So I went to Preferences > General > Enable Display Color Management and checked it. Now the LUT makes my exported videos look 98% like inside of Premiere. This is invaluable Matt, thank you! For those whose footage is turning out just a bit too dark with the LUT, this helped me: before color grading go to Premiere preferences > General and make sure Display Color Management is checked. This will adjust the view to your to your screen (and in my case, hopefully yours too, darkened it). I believe this darkening is happening at export but now that you have it enabled, you can accurately color correct and then your export with the LUT will work.

    Hey Matt! This was very helpful. Like many others though, my footage was a bit too dark after the Adobe LUT fix. HOWEVER-I figured out how to perfect the formula:
    I created an adjustment layer for my whole timeline called “Export Layer.” Then I made the following color corrections to this adjustment layer:
    Temperature @ 3
    Exposure @ 0.2 for “normal” clips
    Exposure @ 0.5 for “darker” clips
    Exposure @ 0.7 for “darkest” clips
    Highlights @ -17
    Shadows @ 14
    Saturation @ 105 for all clips
    Took me several tries to get it right, but my exports are looking extremely accurate to my Premiere preview window now!
    Hope this helps.

  • @NotThePulla
    @NotThePulla 4 роки тому +7

    Much appreciated for creating a walkthrough on how to fix it. The most annoying part is that this is just another reason Premiere is infuriating and continuing to go in the wrong direction. You now have to add an extra render-slowing lut onto the footage just to make it look like its supposed to. Why wouldn't they have a check box in the render window for broadcast safe, than forcing everyone to just go that way and add extra steps to to reverse it. its like apple automatically adding the U2 album to every iphone

    • @yannickmuller2707
      @yannickmuller2707 2 роки тому +1

      Not even that necessarily... The QT compensation Lut just adds contrast & dynamic to the footage. So it still doesn't turn out as viewed inside premiere. The end result differs a lot.
      The Premiere team claims, that the color mistakes comes from the player inside of premiere itself. Which is a blatant & easily debunked lie.

    If it makes the footage darker, I'm confused why you're suggesting to apply this lut in the export window and not as an adjustment layer. I have to color correct the darker clips. By using the export window, you have to calculate how much this will darken the clips and apply that calculation to all clips beforehand.

    For anyone on Mac OS X Mojave or later who gets a black screen in their preview (and a black screen in any renders too) when using this method, you may need to change your Renderer under File - Project Settings - General. For me, switching it from "Metal" to either "OpenCL" or "Software Only" does the trick. I suspect this is an issue related to older video card support going away on the newer OSes.

    Thanks for this very helpful video!
    I used the compensation LUT for my previous project, but now suddenly this LUT is not enough anymore in Premiere 2021.
    Sure, it makes the exported file a bit more saturated and contrasty than without the LUT, but it is still quite undersaturated.
    Any ideas? Anyone else noticed this in the newest version of PP?

      I have the same issue in Premiere pro 2022. It saves some highlighrs from being blown out but I don't get the same results as in the Premiere Programm preview at all. Anybody has an idea of what is going on ?

  • @kizzume
    @kizzume 3 роки тому +14

    Problem is, this doesn't stop Adobe Premiere from messing up the original image to begin with, it just covers it up with a filter.

    • @grizzlycat
      @grizzlycat 3 роки тому

      That's not at all what is going on. Premiere assumes a Rec709 2.4 gamma color space. Macs on the other hand are SRBG 2.2 gamma. It's a color management thing and most users are too amateur to understand this so Adobe slapped a bandaid on the problem.

    • @kizzume
      @kizzume 3 роки тому

      @@grizzlycat I found out the problem. If you use a JPG or PNG file, the color will be messed up. You have to use a bmp or a psd file to have the gamma show correctly.

    • @grizzlycat
      @grizzlycat 3 роки тому

      @@kizzume that’s not true at all. If your image file is RGB you should be fine. I’d guess the problem you’re running into is CMYK to RGB conversion. And don’t ever use BMP in video work. That’s a super outdated format.

    • @kizzume
      @kizzume 3 роки тому

      @@grizzlycat No, that's simply not true. It's a bug, one that has been confirmed by Adobe. And yes, BMP is outdated, that's why it sucks to have to use it. Go ahead and do tests yourself. The JPG or PNG will have brightened gamma. This has been a problem since v13. Maybe they've fixed the problem in the latest, I don't know, I haven't wanted to take a chance, since they so often break things in their new releases.

    If it's not working on your 2016+ MacBook Pro, do this:
    Command + comma > General > Enable Display Color Management, THEN color grade. If you grade with this unchecked, you're gonna have to regrade.
    OR...
    If you don't want to regrade everything again, I made a fairly close quick "correction grade":
    Add a new adjustment layer on top of everything, Lumetri > +120 saturation, +35 shadows.
    Play with these settings. You still need to use the LUT on export as well.
