    IKEA Home Smart + HomePod Mini = A dream budget HomeKit smart home?
    One of the reasons Apple failed to secure a sizeable slice of the Smart Home market was because the original HomePod (2018) was just too expensive for many consumers. Yes, the speaker quality was, and is, exceptionally good, but Apple essentially priced themselves out of the market.
    But now with the £99/$99 HomePod Mini coming to the market in 2020, it's now a very different ball game.
    Whilst Apple has finally brought us an affordable smart home device fit for the mass market, there are far less HomeKit devices compared to their competitors and they are usually more expensive.
    In this video, I review one of the budget HomeKit set ups - IKEA's Home Smart range.
    IKEA Home Smart is one of the cheapest smart home set ups, with a wide array of compatible devices to choose from.
    But, do you get what you pay for?

    Thanks so much for watching! What do you make of the IKEA Home Smart range? Are RGB bulbs a priority to you in your smart home set up, or do you prefer more practical lighting? Let me know down below!

      I like this. How much can you get the motion sensors for? Do you know if they plug into the wall or are they battery powered?

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  3 роки тому +2

      @@davidsmith1097 You can get the motion sensor for £12 in the UK at present. They are battery powered. It is unclear if it works with HomeKit though - some reviews suggest it isn’t, but I will check that out for you - watch this space!

      Is it possible to get RGB bulbs from other brands to work with Tradfri?

    Hey Techi. This was a very well done and very informative video. On the basis of your review I am going to set up my new home with Ikea smart devices, in particular given the price and my own affinity for Homekit-enabled devices. Thanks very much and keep up the good work

    I set this up, I almost went nuts. You have to follow the instructions exactly. If I had not lost the receipt, would of taken it back to the store. Happy now that is set up with Apple mini.

      You do yes - the IKEA system can be hard to set up, but once it has been, I've found it hugely reliable, especially with HomeKit support!

      IKEA are fantastic - but their stores can be hard to access in some places. Can't wait to try their new Matter supporting hub!

    Hey mate, great video! Could you elaborate on what you said at 07:17? I was hoping to get some Tradfri bulbs to use in lamps and put a Tradfri dimmer switch next to them so I could still use a physical switch without screwing up control via Siri. If you turn a light on or off with the remote does HomeKit recognise that and update in the app?

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  3 роки тому +2

      Yes it does!
      You’ll still be able to control the lights with dimmer switches and the Apple Home app will automatically adjust with the light.

    How do you enter the tradfi address directly into HomeKit? I’ve been trying to get them to connect through the Ikea home smart app however it does not bring up the camera to scan the HomeKit code

    I have a Google nest hub. But I still want to use Siri shortcuts with this lamp. Is that possible?

    Hi thanks for the very informative video. I do have a question. 07:16 Does this mean you cannot control your lights with a physical dimmer/on-off switch anymore? Im almost sold on the HomePod Mini / Ikea homesmart combo but I would like to use a physical switch to turn on my ikea smartbulbs every now and than. Do you maybe have any tips for that? Thanks a lot.

      Samotech have a lightswitch mount, whereby you can mount their adapter over your existing dumb light switch, and then clip in the Ikea Tradfri Steering device I believe.

    Will Ikea adopt ‘Threads’? My experience in setting up has been straightforward so far. I am still learning and heartened to see new products launching. I am befuddled by Ikea’s poor marketing of their smart offer. The store (Jerez in Spain) I go to has - IMHO - a great opportunity to better promote their ‘SMART’ offering. And might display such as one in a clear statement of Ikea’s commitment to make our homes smart and our use of power intelligent.

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  3 роки тому +1

      That's a great question Paul - and one which I can only guess at an answer to. I don't think IKEA will shift to Thread, purely because a Zigbee network of devices (like IKEA) won't massively benefit from a shift to Thread.
      But, you're absolutely right, IKEA should be putting their Home Smart range to the forefront more! It's not even easy to find it on their website unless you know where to look!

    Is Tradfri Thread compatible? From what i understand Thread would replace the Gateway?

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  3 роки тому +2

      This is a great question - At present, no it's not, but because it's Zigbee compliant, there are suggestions that the devices could be made Thread compatible with a software update (because everything that Thread needs is already present in MOST Zigbee devices)
      If that were to happen, you'd probably not need the TRADFRI gateway anyway, because the HomePod Mini would be acting as the hub for the entire system, and since it all connects together in an overlapping web, the TRADFRI gateway would be redundant

    interesting video, i was curious: if i don't have an apple homepod, to use the automation with apple home app can't i just set a siri shortcut and make an automation with it? i don't have any homekit smart devices and i was interested in buy this ikea devices to use the shortcut app and use them with geolocalization automation

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  2 роки тому +1

      In this case, you might not necessarily need to even sure shortcuts - If you use the IKEA Home Smart app, you'll be able to operate the IKEA lights absolutely fine without a HomeKit hub. However, you won't be able to use geologication without it.
      Having said that, you could integrate geolocation to this set up with HomeAssistant, but that could get quite complicated. Integrating these with HomeKit would make this a lot more straightforward

    Does the gateway work with non-IKEA brand smart devices?

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  3 роки тому

      Excellent question - In theory yes, but in practice, I haven't tested this, and I think it depends. It is known that IKEA bulbs will work with third party gateways (e.g: Philips Hue) but Hue bulbs do not work with the IKEA hub. So it may be on a case-by-case basis that other Zigbee enabled products work with the IKEA hub.

  • @Capital444
    @Capital444 3 роки тому +1

    Why buy Philips Hue when you can get these at a fraction of the price?

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  3 роки тому

      That's a great question - Hue do have some benefits; they do have a reputation for being a lot more reliable and offer a far greater array of products compared to IKEA. They also offer RGB bulbs whereas IKEA don't (yet!)

    • @bemindful924
      @bemindful924 3 роки тому

      @@HeyTechi And in the Philips Hue assortment you'll find ledstrips that offer both (warm?) white and RGB. As far as I know Ikea doesn't sell these yet, just the warm white strips with only a brightness function.

    Can I use Ikea smart home devices without Ikea gateway? Can HomePod mini be gateway for Ikea devices? I have HomePod mini and I don't want to waste money

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  Рік тому

      Hi Kacper, if you want to use IKEA smart home devices with your HomePod Mini, you will need an IKEA smart home hub. They've recently launched a new hub, Dirigera, which is more expensive, but looks like a worthwhile upgrade if you're just getting started. Our review video will be up in a few weeks!

    All Apple stuff is just to much and I would not consider any product from Apple, they are a rip-off company to be avoided at all cost.

    • @HeyTechi
      @HeyTechi  Рік тому

      We'll have to agree to disagree on that Bob - but IKEA are still a great smart home option if you'll be building a smart home with Google or Amazon. They're not as budget as they used to be, but the overall performance and experience has improved greatly!
