I've been building a spreadsheet on my cats diet/costs and while Ziwi is expensive if you feed them either wet OR dried food, you can significantly reduce the cost by feeding both wet AND dry products. My cat's daily caloric requirements are ~200 cal/day: By feeding 1/2 can (92g) and 14g dried (chicken), I can reduce costs by 15% while also reducing the carbohydrate intake from the canned food. You can further reduce costs by 18% by feeding 1/3 can (62g) of wet food (chicken) and 22g of dried (chicken). Again, this is based on my cats caloric needs.

We switched to Ziwi Peak wet food and though it's twice as expensive as the Blue Buffalo our cat was used to when he was young, it's well worth it. I really like that it doesn't have carrageenan, guar gum, or xanthan gum. The artificial binders are very triggering for intestinal inflammation. Benji is doing so much better with his new food and I suspect his coat is softer too.

I bought 6 cans of Ziwi's original wet line for my cat to try, all different proteins. She loved every single one! It's expensive, so I think I'll keep it to just a few cans rotated in weekly.

Thank you for your videos on cat food choices. They are so incredibly thorough in their presentation. Our three cats have been loving Ziwi for at least a year now, but being expensive we kind of been changing it out at times with a new one that we just discovered - and one that they love too - which is Earthborn Holistic. They seem to love all 6 flavors, but now that I’ve seen your videos, I’ll be checking the extra important aspects on the can (the same with Tiki Cat as well). Your “Smalls” video has us interested too. Thank you again for what you do.

My wife says, "Thank you for your review. We are owned by 2 Tuxedo cats. Our little girl won't touch the Lamb recipe, but our little boy loves it. He has a history of food allergies and cystitis, so he must be on a limited ingredient, wet food.
Despite the chickpeas, his weight remains stable and well within normal range. He gets most of the large can about every 3-4 day cycle, and I actually add some water to it to make a more moist pate. We like the quality of this food and feel it is worth the price. He also likes the other New Zealand brand which is of excellent quality as well and actually has no chickpeas. Both companies seem to have very high standards. We do think that cats are like people though, too often we like the things that aren't as good for us. Since it isn't easy to find foods that he can eat, we are very happy that he likes this one!"

Thx for doing the review for Ziwi peak! They used to be one of the two brands I gave my cats before they transitioned to raw diet! Usually feed their canned food but highly recommend their air dried food when you need to go on a trip!. You are not the only one who complained that their cats are not very interested in the food! One way I would recommend is to ground the jerky up. Sometimes the texture and shape would scare the cats off. But when you ground it, it will be a lot easier for them to eat it. And you can top it onto canner food too to add some extra flavor! Hope this will help!

Thanks for all the research, hat was interesting. I had not heard of this brand before, so I will be looking in to it for my three cats. One thing I've learned about carbs is to check out the food on the glycemic index. Refined products and starchy vegetables are higher, so spike blood sugar & insulin, & causing fat storage. Many veggies are low carb. And since mammals' bodies are run by hormones, strict calorie counting doe not work (& there is no mechanism in the body to count calories). Reducing refined carbs is the healthier way to go. I've noticed too that many cat products have added sugar, such as hairball remedies. Cats definitely do not need sugars.

Ever since I got my kitten 2 months ago, this is all I’ve gotten him and he loves it! I mix a little bit of the dry food with the wet food until the wet food can runs out, so i try to portion the can to 3 meals a day! I’ve also gotten him a new flavor every time it’s time for a new bag or set of cans. I buy him the dry food bag and a 24 pack of wet food and my total is about $130 🥶 but only the best for him!

I have been feeding my female 1 year old cat for a month now with Ziwi. She does not like it very much like the previous kibble Taste of the Wild brand. I do have to mix it with regular wet food for her to eat more. I also noticed she is not pooing regularly, so after 1 month and only 2 poos later I decided to go back to regular feeding. She seems happier. Unfortunately she did not adapt. Guess I can save money now!

Keep in mind that not only is this food rich in muscle and bone. It is also basically all ORGANIC. Compare that to the "high end" food that uses animals that have been fed and raised horrendously, this is as good a cat food as you can get. Another reason for the higher prices. Raising all organic is much more expensive to make than raising feed on grain junk, byproducts and chemically "enhanced" food.

    • @foodie_oboist

Have you tried several novel proteins? The vet/prescription ones are more highly regulated against cross contamination of other proteins. Before deciding to cook rabbit for my cat's food trial, I was considering Rayne's food. I decided to cook for him because like you said, the hydrolyzed protein diets are pretty low quality with mostly carbs. There's not many options for novel protein diets that are decent either (my vet said the Blue Buffalo alligator one has been talked about in nutritionist circles as iffy because of their quality control standards). If your cats aren't on a hydrolyzed protein diet because of food allergies, sorry it doesn't apply to you, but maybe will be helpful to others.

@@foodie_oboist thanks for the suggestion! Yes, I've tried many novel protein diets, supervised by my vet. However, an allergy does not seem to be the case of my cats, as those diets didn't work, and hydrolyzed protein food made of chicken suits them....so chicken (which is the first meat they ate) is not the problem! It looks like they lack the enzymes to digest proteins, and that's why they need them hydrolyzed.... It is frustrating but I guess low quality food that they can digest is better than diarrhea and malnutrition because of quality food they cannot digest....
Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Be aware that the dehydrated Kiwi food contains a very high ratio of protein. My veterinarian, in Canada, took my 10 year old cat off this food because of that problem.
Her other issue was the fact that re-hydration of all freeze dried foods is VITAL. It has been suggested that because cats are not generally good drinkers, feeding this dry can lead to severe dehydration of the cat.
Just my own experience with one veterinarian's opinion. I suggest you check and trust your own doctor's advice.

@@pukapikachu kidney function still has a limit - excess protein and phosphorous are damaging to the kidneys. Especially when most cats will eat a high protein diet but then live very sedentary indoor lives with none of the normal moisture that a real meat meal would have - also, in the wild, animals that eat meat also eat soluble fibers and moisture and roughage/vegetables in the digested matter of the prey animal. This means people have misunderstandings on what "obligate carnivore means" - feeding extra protein or fats are not the only things needed in a diet to simulate the natural diet.

Did your cats eat it? My one cat was allergic to chicken and it was difficult to find any canned food that didn't have chicken in it. This was one of the options, but the price was so high I couldn't afford it and it seemed occasionally it was "out of stock" which makes it difficult. Thanks for your video.

Perhaps the price of good cat food is not so bad when considering that a vet bill generally starts at 300 dollars and goes up from there. Plus you are feeding your cat, which we have to do anyway. If we are what we eat so is our cats. This is how I rationalize the price I pay for decent cat food. It is either feed your kitty well or later on pay a vet when our cats' health begins to fail.

I feed my cats exclusively ZiwiPeak wet food mixed with a bit of water as my research indicates cats can suffer from kidney issues with a low water diet.
I also brush their teeth daily to make up for the teeth health benefits of crunching into dry food.
I was not really aware of the downsides of the high carbohydrates in the ZiwiPeak wet food.

Hi! Just discovered you and your reviews. Why have I not find you earlier 😭. I think everyone who's looking through all your videos means everyone is looking to switch the food for their cat. For dry food switching, it's easy.. Buy the small pack and allow the cat to explore it's new food and not breaking my wallet as wastage if it doesn't like it. But for wet food, in your opinion. How many cans is appropriate? Taking the can as the small standard canned wet food. How many cans is an appropriate amount to buy for testing with my cat. I understand all cats are different with accepting new food. But in general, to ascertain that a cat somewhat loves it (easily observed, wary and takes time (this one I think in general) and totally hates it (probably 1 day won't even eat and just prefer the eating the dry ones even when theres wet food available next to it) I'm not sure like is 2 cans enough? Or 12 cans 😂 would love your input on this and looking forward to your reply! I'm gonna binge on your videos. Keep going on your video content. I'm already in love after watching 2 FULL from start till finish with no skips. Haha!

To tell you the truth I am lost actually 😭. I use to give my cat schesir canned food as recommended by a friend. My cat LOVED it and would look forward to eating it. And then it came crashing. Suddenly after months of eating it's wet food. He vomits it out. I brush it of thinking. Mehhhh hairball. Just once. So I stopped. Resume afew days later. But then he seem to increase its vomit with the brand as in he doesn't vomit the food after he devours it. It'll be after a few days. He'll vomit it and the frequency seems to increase. I don't know why and vet says he's ok. So I'm thinking of changing the wet food to another reputable brand. I'm assuming he don't like it anymore? So he vomits it out? As a show to his owner 'pls get me another kind I don't like it' if there is such a thing. 😂

It really depends on the cat and the food, but generally, it will take between 1 and 2 weeks to finish the transition to a new food. Again, the number of cans is going to depend on the food and cat, but assuming a gradual transition, I'd shoot for 5-10 cans to get you through that transitional period.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  3 роки тому

As for why your cat is suddenly vomiting his new food, it's realy hard to say what went wrong. There may have been a formulation change or perhaps the issue is coming from something else your cat is eating. I would experiment with another food to get a better handle on the situation.

Was going to give our cat a try of this as looking for an alternate wet food but was hoping to find information on the consistency before doing so and now see that it's pate style which our cat doesn't like. His preference is more gravy style. Even if we mix water in, he knows and he won't eat it. Bummer.
I seem to be able to find a lot of reviews on quality dry food but not wet. I will keep searching. I often find with a lot of these 'higher end' brands, you have to purchase in bulk which is risky when introducing a new food to a cat when they cost so much per can, even when buying in a larger quantity!

Now on antibiotics to see if that helps. I’m so tired of her runny poops. They are just soooo smelly and it must be not very nice for her either poor love. Idk. I’m lost!!
