I don't think that 'prom' in itself is a problem - it is like many things in life... mobile phones for example. They are great... except when people are exploited and forced into quasi-slavery to mine the minerals and rare metals needed for their construction. Or when people are addicted to their phones.
'Prom' is a problem because of the abuses in the industry, the racist stereotypes that are reinforced, and the way in which performers are looked down upon by the very hypocrites who consume the material.
Unfortunately, like most topics nowadays, balanced arguments looking at the pros and cons are shouted down by the extremists on both sides.
