Fun fact: initially, the writers made Sokka a more serious character, but Jack De Sena (Sokka's voice actor) decided to improvise some lines and added a few jokes. Thus, the actor changed Sokka's character forever...
What do you mean "For some reason". He's grows up, that's the reason! Plus, he goes through several wars and become a counselor, of fuckin course he become more serious!
His growth through the whole series is excellent. Keep in mind that in a legendary epic about Kung Fu wizards who can manipulate the elements, Sokka grows from a kid to a seasoned warrior who can hold his own and has a keen strategic mind to boot.
Zuko is probably my favorite arc, though Katarra deserves a mention, especially because now there's so many strong female characters written today that feel heavy handed and forced, but Katarra is authentic and perfectly placed within the broader story.
I love when kids shows don't underestimate the children's intelligence. Avatar did an amazing job handling a bunch of different topics in a way kids could understand and enjoy, and that's great. So great that even adults can enjoy it.
Politics, the philosophy of martial arts (though fictional), and growing up with various responsibilities are all aspects of this show I appreciate. Also, the perils and consequences of war.
@@BakumanLakuman They might be fictional, but you can trace them to real world philosophy like confucianism and daoism, and you can present a bunch of its topics as philosophical problems, like the ethical implications of Zuko's journey, destiny, bending (especially a specific kind of bending that I don't wanna spoil), etc. You can trace all that to Aristotle, Sartre, Kierkegaard, Kant, etc. Part of the fun is that the show doesn't present them as such, but as concrete scenarios that make you go "wait, is this good or bad?" and I think that's really cool.
@@BATTIS94 Very true. Many real-world philosophical applications. Much of the history surrounding Earth-bending is what I found most interesting. Every type of bending nation has their specific political design that mirrors their style, so of course the Earth kingdom is about solidarity with the army and secret police.

thing to keep in mind is that even tho we the audience can see airbending, it is canonically invissible to the people in the show unless it's bending smoke or mist or something. Airbenders are probably a lot more deadly than their cultural fighting techniques would suggest
It's also fast and readily available. Unlike fire, which has to be generated from the bender's ki (so basically no "pull" type moves) and water, which is much scarcer than earth or air.
@@ARC--ms1se I like to think that, in classic airbender style, the firebenders actually killed one another. It was a fairly enclosed space for that amount of fire and simple evasion and redirection (via wind currents) could char quite a few of them
@@trequorthere was a video I watched w a theory that he sucked the air out of the firebenders lungs which would be sick don’t know how true it is but would be dope

The reason he has the arrow tattoos: Once an airbender has either learned all airbending techniques, or create an entirely new one, they receive arrow tattoos. Aang had been proficient with most of the techniques, but became a master so young because he invented the air scooter.
@@mattrobinson5479it literally CAN'T be a requirement for every bender getting their tattoos to create a new technique. If that were the case, there'd be thousands of them. It's almost definitely and either/or thing. Aang just happened to do both

The Jet episode was surprisingly dark. A traumatized leader willing to kill civilians because he was blinded by hatred of his enemy. It shocked me as a kid, it scares me still as an adult.
I can easily imagine that townspeople actually hating Jet and siding with soldiers, ratting out his freedom fighters to the Fire nation and then soldiers burning his village to the ground. I can also imagine Jet telling this story to Avatar's friends and Sokka and Katara siding with Jet even after they had known of his sick plan. But that would be fantasy, not a child story. Civilians usually support their nation's soldiers in real life and are not averse to commit crimes helping said soldiers to invade and kill. The line between a civilian and an invader is really thin in real life. As well as a line between guerilla freedom fighter and a heartless killer. People are people, both the good and the bad dwells inside them.
Thoughts on the first time Aang faces Zuko: Despite the age difference, Aang has been training airbending his whole life, with accelerated training once they figured out he was the Avatar. Also, as Aang said, before he ran away and froze himself in an iceberg, he had friends all over the world from every nation. He had played with (and trained against?) firebenders in his past. On the flip side, this is Zuko's first encounter ever with an airbender, as they were wiped out almost 100 years ago. So Aang already has an idea of what defensive (and offensive) moves that fit his fighting style are best against a firebender.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS SEASON 2 Aang is also an airbending prodigy being the youngest Airbending Master ever (at the time). Zuko is obviously talented but he’s nowhere near a prodigy like Azula (the fire bending equivalent to Aang’s airbending). so even with equal training Aang would probably have a natural advantage (plus he’s the Avatar which must help).
Aang was a once in a lifetime prodigy before he was the Avatar. Zuko has always had to scrape and fight for everything he has, at least in his own mind. Zuko was never going to be able to beat him any more than he would have been able to beat Azula without befriending him.
Fun fact, in case it was never noticed/pointed out: Zhao is voiced by Jason Isaacs, aka Papa Malfoy. And if you've seen the movie Hook, Zuko is voiced by Rufio.
I actually got to meet Dante Basco at a con lately, and the line of people there was like 50/50 Zuko fans and Rufio fans - definitely way more Rufio fans than I expected!
@@AL-fl4jk Oh yeah, I'm not surprised Rufio's popular, I just sort of assumed based on my local con's usual audience that it would be mostly Zuko fans. Then again, the con has gotten a lot bigger in the last couple of years...
The Cabbage Guy is the best character in the whole series. Aang by himself: intelligent, powerful, a force to be reckoned with Sokka by himself: intelligent, crafty, does his best with what he has Aang and Sokka in the same room: the last two brain cells in existence
My theory is that Aang and Sokka share a brain cell. It only works when they're close to each other, and it's a really stupid brain cell. All their other brain cells breathe a sigh of relief when it's gone.
It actually does make sense that despite Aang's young (at least biological) age and inexperience, almost everyone he fought had a lot of trouble fighting him. Remember, Airbenders have been dead for a hundred years so no one alive at this point actually knows how to properly fight them unlike other benders, plus the fact that Aang was already a master of Airbending by the time he was 12 years old before he learned he was The Avatar (Remember, being a master at something you've practised and trained for and having actual practical experience are two completely different things).
Zuko's character arc and his dynamic with his uncle Iroh is one of the most moving, powerful, emotional elements to any show I've ever seen. Not only his internal battles but his change in how he values his uncle being there for him and starting to take influence and even admitting being influenced by him. Iroh is one of the best characters in television history. Period.

@@layton6202 the first 2/3 of S1 is incredibly childish because it needed to fit Nickelodeon’s kid show quotas but once it was established it really comes into its own. This show is widely considered to be one of the greatest shows in a generation. I hope you get the same impression! I’m not being dramatic when I say this show defined my childhood and has heavily influenced me well into adulthood! P.S. Fun fact: the four nations in the show are actually based off of real Earth cultures. The Water Tribe is based of Inuit culture. The Earth Kingdom is based off Han Chinese culture (though the Earth Kingdom is huge and there are other cultures scattered about within). The Fire Nation is based off Mayan, Incan and other South American cultures. The Air Nomads are based off Tibetan monks. Also, the bending styles of the four elements are all based off of real martial art styles that represent the nature and general attitudes of their respective elements/nations. The movements for Air bending, for example, are based off of Ba Gua, a passive martial art style that focuses mostly on evasive tactics and constantly staying behind your enemy. If you pay attention, you can see Aang use this fighting style during fight scenes. The level of research and attention to detail that went into this show is insane! Just thought you might appreciate that :)
It is important to remember that these are not supposed to be perfect replications. Like for instance the Inuit don't have blue eyes and they don't actually sail (though their relatives on the Alaskan coast do sail). All the nations are amalgations, though they use a central inspiration there is a lot of creative mishmash and new ideas (like the American hillbilly waterbenders)
The Fire Nation as a whole doesn't have many Native American inspirations, that would be the Sun Warriors. The nation is more like an industrializing Japan in geography, culture, advancement, and bloodlust.
37:38 Only firebenders can create their own element, but they aren’t creating it from nothing. They are converting the energy in their bodies into fire, which is why it can be incredibly exhausting. Theoretically, waterbenders could make their own water as well, but that would mean ripping out their own bodily fluids and probably dying….so it’s not exactly the best idea in a fight.

I really hope you enjoy it as much as me and both my kids have
12:00 Not really all that strange, not only is the avatar by far the most powerful bender in the world. Aang is also a master airbender while Zuko is practicing the basic set of firebending.
S1 is definitely the hardest to get through out of all three, which is saying a lot for the rest of the seasons bc S1 is pretty good anyways. S1 is a lot of buildup, characterization, etc. but it creates a strong foundation for an amazing rest of the show as the stakes build and lead to a fantastic ending Also, Aang is 12 (112 technically), Katara is 14, and Sokka is 15-16. I don’t think the show intended to portray certain elements being better at combat against certain other elements. The reason in Ep 2 that Aang fought instead of a waterbender is that there weren’t experienced, warrior waterbenders around. Also any element can fight any element pretty fairly I’d say. The skill of the bender is what comes into play mostly.

Firebending is based on energy (as Iroh said, it comes from the breath). The energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire. That's why they're the only ones who can create their element. Waterbenders can manipulate water wherever it is though, including vapour, ice, or take it from plants and air.
I always felt it made sense to have to create fire. While fire is part of nature it has to be created by having heat fuel and oxygen. It doesn't last forever like rock air or water. It's not as abundant. It needs to be created.

@@gracehiggins2666 that is indeed a hot take. The fortune teller is hilarious in my opinion, while the great divides comedy falls flat. That’s the difference for me, but everyone’s entitled to their opinion
@@TransparentEclipse I’m not sure there was really meant to be that much comedy in “The Great Divide”, tho? Maybe it’s just cause my background is in art, but I really loved how they used a unique art style for each of the three times someone tells the story of Jin Wei and Wei Jin. It was a very creative bit of visual storytelling that wasn’t really done in many episodes.
@@gracehiggins2666 there was plenty of comedy bits in the great divide. The earthbenders lines were almost exclusively comedic relief, sokka had a few one liners like the one about him taking their side because they fed him, the huge aang anime eyes moment, and the resolution of the episode was entirely played for a laugh, basically making everything that had just happened in the episode irrelevant and just played off for a laugh. It’s hard to tell because most of the jokes aren’t funny, only the earth bender gets anything remotely funny in this episode. I agree the art style they used for the lie at the end was cool, but it was about 5% of the episode. The rest of the episode they spend wandering around in a pretty boring landscape visually and artistically, and the episode had nothing to do with the overarching plot of the show. The new characters were one note, boring, and never showed up again, while the main cast all felt extremely out of character with the exception of aang, and even his character feels a bit weird here. The problem with this episode is it’s entirely filler, and yet still doesn’t achieve anything despite being filler. I have nothing wrong with filler, but filler in shows is supposed to be for a purpose. In tales of ba sing se, it’s showing us the characters just having a normal day, as well as developing their characters emotionally. And it’s got some good humor. Episodes like the fortune teller are meant to make the viewer laugh, while also showcasing aangs power and advancing aang and kataras relationship plot lines. Despite being filler, those episodes achieve things. The great divide doesn’t achieve anything, and yet is still filler because nothing of importance happens and it’s boring throughout. Those are my gripes with it, but again if u enjoy it more than other episodes that is entirely ur opinion, and ur entitled to it.
@@TransparentEclipse Wow! It seems you are much more intimately knowledgeable about the episode than I am, despite you claiming to like it less, LOL! A couple points I disagree with though: - The guide does have some comedic lines, but the scene that sticks in my head is his conversation with Aang after the tribes were split up. That scene is almost entirely straight, with no comedic breaks. - “the resolution of the episode was entirely played for a laugh, basically making everything that had just happened in the episode irrelevant and just played off for a laugh.” This is, without a doubt, the biggest difference in a opinion I have with people who don’t like the episode. I could not disagree with you more on this point. The resolution of the episode does not even remotely make light of the episode. And honestly I feel like this is a testament to the weakness of the first ~15 episodes. You were expecting dumb humor like that in “The Fortune Teller”, but this was one of the first episodes that tried to have broader themes, and your response was “durr, it’s not funny.” “I agree the art style they used for the lie at the end was cool, but it was about 5% of the episode.” Wrong. It wasn’t just when Aang was telling his version of the story. There were three unique, distinct art style in the episode. The first was when the Gan Jin were telling the story, the second was when the Zhang were telling the story, and the third was when Aang was telling the story. They were different each time. I've always found this take pretty disingenuous, because it objectively is a kid's show. This idea that a kid's show can't cover serious topics like war or genocide is pretty condescending to kids. They're people too, and don't like to be talked down to or treated like idiots.

This show is so good that I forgot that we know exactly why Uncle Iroh can see the Dragon Spirit, but not until Season 3...That's awesome that I missed that detail.
It’s definitely an amazing series. It covers loss, the consequences/fallout of war, and a bunch of other complex and emotionally difficult concepts in ways that are relatable to almost all ages. There’s a reason it won a Peabody award. Excited for you to see it!
@@layton6202 I agree; however, as a cartoon on a “children’s” television network, the “childishness” is not surprising. With that being said, neither that nor the plot holes take away from the series having surprising depth in some of the concepts it tackles (and making them relatable even to young audiences), the critical acclaim the series has received, or the fact that it was deemed worthy of a Peabody Award.

How about just letting people watch the show for themselves? Most of the comments I’ve seen giving answers to Nat’s questions are things the show answers itself in later episodes/seasons, which makes them border-line (at best) spoilers.

"Growing moments yaaay" You're gonna see that about every single character. It's very very well done. I am 32 years old and this is by far my fav cartoon
I think the reason Avatar resonates with so many different audiences is because it doesn't patronise them. It has a surprising Greta balance between 'childish' and emotional.
A lot of reactors keep the audio low during the entire video, but I like how you turn it up once in a while so you can still get what's going on.

Part of the fun is that the show doesn't present them as such, but as concrete scenarios that make you go "wait, is this good or bad?" and I think that's really cool.

thing to keep in mind is that even tho we the audience can see airbending, it is canonically invissible to the people in the show unless it's bending smoke or mist or something. Airbenders are probably a lot more deadly than their cultural fighting techniques would suggest
It's also fast and readily available. Unlike fire, which has to be generated from the bender's ki (so basically no "pull" type moves) and water, which is much scarcer than earth or air.

Yes, please watch this show as fast as you can
The Jet episode was surprisingly dark. A traumatized leader willing to kill civilians because he was blinded by hatred of his enemy. It shocked me as a kid, it scares me still as an adult.
Yes. I agree. Jet is one of my fav characters. He's complex and flawed. Too bad he ended the way he did.
Thoughts on the first time Aang faces Zuko:
Despite the age difference, Aang has been training airbending his whole life, with accelerated training once they figured out he was the Avatar.
Great run down mate
POTENTIAL SPOILERS SEASON 2
Aang is also an airbending prodigy being the youngest Airbending Master ever (at the time).
Speaking of Peter Pan connections, Jason Isaacs has also played Captain Hook in the 2003 Peter Pan movie.

@Javid Rashid ehh. Genocide shmenocide

The worldbuilding is so good!
The Fire Nation as a whole doesn't have many Native American inspirations, that would be the Sun Warriors. The nation is more like an industrializing Japan in geography, culture, advancement, and bloodlust.

I recently watched this show for the first time. For years and years friends have been telling me how good it is, but I had to see it for myself to understand how absurdly good it actually is.

Honestly, this is the smartest way to watch this show I’ve ever seen, in the 10 episode format. U will watch the great divide but then immediately watch 9 better episodes right after. Ingenious
Hot take: there are worse episodes in Season 1 than “The Great Divide”, including one of the 9 episodes you reference (“The Fortune Teller”)
A couple points I disagree with though:
- The guide does have some comedic lines, but the scene that sticks in my head is his conversation with Aang after the tribes were split up. That scene is almost entirely straight, with no comedic breaks.
- “the resolution of the episode was entirely played for a laugh, basically making everything that had just happened in the episode irrelevant and just played off for a laugh.”
This is, without a doubt, the biggest difference in a opinion I have with people who don’t like the episode. I could not disagree with you more on this point. The resolution of the episode does not even remotely make light of the episode. And honestly I feel like this is a testament to the weakness of the first ~15 episodes. You were expecting dumb humor like that in “The Fortune Teller”, but this was one of the first episodes that tried to have broader themes, and your response was “durr, it’s not funny.”
“I agree the art style they used for the lie at the end was cool, but it was about 5% of the episode.”
Wrong. It wasn’t just when Aang was telling his version of the story. There were three unique, distinct art style in the episode. The first was when the Gan Jin were telling the story, the second was when the Zhang were telling the story, and the third was when Aang was telling the story. They were different each time.

I wouldn't say suffer, I think it is actually a good thing that its more lighthearted, albeit some episodes and ideas are maybe a bit too simple and childlike. but a lot of cartoons and anime are so incredibly dark that it's refreshing that ATLA season 1 is often childlike.

and it doesnt treat its viewers as braindead morons when talking about the real world issues it tackles. this is the way you do progressive story telling, its not woke, its real.
I've always found this take pretty disingenuous, because it objectively is a kid's show. This idea that a kid's show can't cover serious topics like war or genocide is pretty condescending to kids. They're people too, and don't like to be talked down to or treated like idiots.
@@craigime but it's a well written kids show
