  • On February 13, 2011, the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato returned to sing her fourth recital for the Harriman-Jewell Series on her birthday and in her hometown. She was joined by pianist David Zobel, who played for DiDonato's 2006 recital, to perform arias and songs by Rossini, Haydn, Chaminade, Hahn, Buzzi-Peccia, Di Chiara, and Leoncavallo. Following the recital program, Series Director Clark Morris wheeled a birthday cake onto stage to celebrate the occasion. This recording was approved by Ms. DiDonato. www.hjseries.org

So many singers are so afraid of this song, and for good reason. After all, nobody will ever bring to it what Judy Garland brought, but that has less to do with her vocals (amazing as they were) than it does her ability to bring emotion through. This strikes me as very nice mostly because is *isn't* just another "cover." She doesn't try to pretend that she isn't an opera singer, and she takes it to her own place. Beautiful.

I liked how the audience reacted upon hearing the opening piano section.

I saw her do this in person in Atlanta in 2011 (Spivey Hall). It was spectacular.

I love that the pianist quotes Una Voce Poco Fa at the end.

For the ultimate piano accompaniment to this song you need to hear Sir Antonio Pappano's improvised jazzy performance with Joyce which they threw off at the end of the Grammy Awards. It was broadcast on Sean Rafferty's "At home with Antonio Pappano" on New Year's Day 2014 on Radio 3. Boy it's magic! I'd like to be able to play like that.

I was there and she was great. Not really a surprise, only wished for more encores. I wasn't alone in that with I'm thinking.

@sdfgsgsdgs I actually really disagree. She made her diction very forward and speech-like and even straight-toned a lot of phrases which are all very "musical theater" things to do. I say this as someone who has done a lot of both musical theater and classical singing. Yes, sometimes her voice is a little "big" at certain parts, but I thought it was lovely overall.

Well she isn't going to sound like Judy Garland, but Judy could not do most of what Joyce does either.

Gorgeous! Both Natalie Dessay and Renee Fleming need to takes lessons from Joyce on how to sing this song.

İ really appreciate her as an opera singer, but this video unfortunately is a dramatic example of what opera does to voice and singing character. Still love her, though.
