I like to think that the Tholians are the only species in Star Trek that is truly alone. There are no other life forms in the galaxy who match their heat and biochemical nature, no other worlds have the right conditions for them to settle (the closest would be Venus-like worlds and even those are pretty toxic), and a quirk of the cosmos has placed their star system in multiple timelines, meaning they can't even find more of themselves in the mirror universe. They are wholly alone, and that infuriates them.

Trek either intentionally or accidentally, made the Tholians vague and mysterious. That is critical to a science fiction alien species. We learn little bits here and there about them. Startrek Online didn't ruin the Tholians, but it did shatter some of the mystique that surrounded them, based partly, from the ENT episode 'In a Mirror Darkly' by showing the Tholians unveiled. That being said, I though ENT's adaptation of the Tholians was kinda cool, even if it did remove the mystery. They're totally alien, menacing and their environmental requirements are pretty unique to startrek aliens as a whole.

In Star Trek Online you encounter this vessel before it's destroyed and it's one crewmember, they came in a temporal ship to help with a star in one of the habitable systems of two races that were very different on two different planets. One race tried to use a new technology based off of the unique properties of their protomatter knowledge to re-ignite the sun, something went wrong and the ship was sent to Archer's time and the pilot was killed. Temporal agents from various species tried to get it's technology before it was thrust through time and destroyed.

They couldn't date as superior and subordinate officers couldn't, but that didn't stop them from helping each other. Trip helped her more socially in a way, even before she took that Trellium to learn what it meant to feel emotions-good and bad. She even learned to eat with her fingers, enjoy movie night, play-act, and take care of her baby (even though it was only for a short time before Elizabeth died). Virginia Connor Canonical inconsistency between TOS and ENT. One of many which appear throughout ENT. The first Federation encounter with the Tholians supposedly occurs in the TOS episode ‘The Tholian Web’. In that episode, nothing said onscreen indicates any prior knowledge by the Federation about the Tholians as a species. The Tholians appear in only that one TOS episode. Based on that, Archer’s Enterprise should not have encountered the Tholians in his time. Strictly speaking, the whole ENT series storyline has very little canonical basis in TOS.

Judging by how they talk to each other before her commission
(not Starfleet graduation, she was commissioned specifically as a linguist), Archer (who has a tendency to be lax with the rules and interpersonal politeness) and her were friends before this.

I'm opposed to fans blatantly shitting on new Star Trek series while Threshold continues to be a thing that existed, but generally, military-esque organizations (including the not-military-very-organized Starfleet) require a specific degree of clarity and formality. You don't mince words by being ambiguous, you address the highest ranking officer with all relevant briefings, and you don't disrespect the chain of command or your superiors.
Like I said: considering that, I think Hoshi Sato is commissioned specifically as a linguist, and only technically an officer. Captain Archer plays loose with the rules to get what he thinks everyone needs.
