    The new 2021 Bluesound Node is the successor of the Node 2i. It’s not called the Node 3, Bluesound calls it just the Node, with no number added. What else has changed since the very popular Node 2i.

    I received answers from Bluesound concerning the USB Audio output: It will be both Class 1 and Class 2 with max 24/192. The update enabling this is probably due within two months. Doing MQA decoding (not rendering, of course) over USB will probably due later this year. As soon as a working sample is available, I will get a review sample on loan. As soon as a PowerNode is available for these, I will receive that too.

    Great video to keep us up to speed Hans! In 2018, I researched Roon Ready and MQA DACs for several months before purchasing my Node 2i. I feel that the Node 2i has great quality, features and interconnects for the price. My Bluesound product has never disappointed me.

    Just got mine today. Plugged to an old Denon7200WA with a Paradigm Prestige 5.1.4 system. Sources are Amazon and local Synogoly. Setup was easy thanks to internet for Synology connection. App is used on old iPhone6s and I like the interface. Easy to use. DAC seems better than the Denon... listening to Molly Johnson - Another Day as I think it's a nice recording and this Summertime version is also one of my fav after JJ's. Thank Hans for your great videos... I m learning something each time I discover one of your post.

    Great review (as always).
    I am glad it seems that Bluesound has taken on board two irritating issues that many users (me included) had.
    1. They ditched the rubbery material used for the case of the unit. This rubber disintegrates over time and is impossible to clean it.
    2. They changed the power supply, hopefully getting rid of leaky capacitors and other issues.
    And addition of HDMI Arc will be useful to many people.
    Thumbs up for the upgrade!!!

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel It was the infamous constant red light problem. The streamer looks as it is in the upgrade mode. Usual procedures like resets etc. don't help, because the root of the problem is in hardware fault (power supply). Many people had this.

    Good as always! It would be very informative to also rate the sound quality via the digital output, when used with a reference DAC of your choice, vs other streamers' digital output. Many people already have their DAC of choice. The Node 2i didn't measure very well on digital output, perhaps this new one is cleaner. But what matter most is what a trained ear can spot in the sound vs other streamers' digital out(s).

    So I did have a Node2i that I bought literally less then a month before the Node was announced. So I returned the Node2i and exchanged it for a preorder on the Node. And no, I didn’t have to do that, since the changes are minimal, but the giant difference it made for me, was the addition of the HDMI connection, as my main music system is doubled as the speakers for my TV in the living room. So it was the perfect center piece for my system, which is mainly old school analog, and the TV only has optical connection, which sucks. So being able to send audio over eArc, was a nobrainer.

Although I immensely appreciate excellent sound quality & will buy the 2021 Node, I don't have the budget for a very high end system or interconnects. I own a 3 yr old Marantz SR7012 AV Receiver but not a dedicated DAC. In your opinion, would it be best to connect the 2021 Node via RCA cables to maximize the usage of the onboard Node DAC? If yes, can you suggest a maximum bang for the buck RCA Interconnect pls?

    I doubt anyone is going to trade up from a node 2i to the new node even without knowing about the lack of differentiation on the sound quality. Updates like this are as much for the manufacturers to redesign boards, change pcb suppliers etc to reduce production costs, etc as they are about enticing people to upgrade.

    Thanks for getting the Node review out so quickly. I’m still using the Node 2 just as a streamer and a place to access my flac files via hard drive. I actually had a 2i for comparison but the 2 sounded better to me personally, so I returned the 2i. Since I’m only using the streamer and usb access the new features on the new Node (as well as the 2i) don’t interest me. Probably not what Bluesound would want to hear, but there it is. I wonder how many people use this the same way I do - a few people have said they do the same.

      If you want a higher quality using the Node with an external DAC is an uncertain router. A chain is only as strong as the weakest link. Although the Node is great for the money, it's not the ideal source for a higher quality DAC.

    I really like my Bluesound Vault with the CD ripper and 2TB storage to act as my music server, well one of them. I use my Plex App to access the 500 CDs I ripped with it as well as the DVDs and BlueRays I ripped from my computer. Plex can also control the Vault as well as my much larger primary server but Bluesound has a fairly decent app of its own

    Thanks Hans, I love my Node 2i, mostly definitely the most enlightening piece of hifi gear I've ever owned, great for discovering new music especially combined with the free access to Radio Paradise or using Tunein radio and access to the world!. No complaints about Audio quality either. Crazy value. I found connecting the coax out to a Schiit multibit DAC made little if any difference for me so sold the dac and saved the money. One thing I'd like to know is if once the USB output option is enabled will you be testing it with a couple of dacs at different price points to see if there is any added benefit over the onboard dac or a coax un-synced dac :-P

      I experienced the same with the NAD MDC bluos module. I contacted NAD and bluesound several times in order to know when the upgrade to the „2i“ version would come and wether AirPlay 2 would be implemented through a firmware update (as yamaha did for example). They just wouldn‘t spill the info, blaming it on apple.
      Then, just weeks later, the 2i version popped and I was left with my brand new, non AirPlay 2 module. I was really frustrated. Just knowing wether the new module would be released after 4 weeks or 6 months would have been so helpful…

I am considering to either go for a classical amplifier (Atoll, AVM in the 2500 price range) combined with a streaming device (e.g. Node, Elac) vs an all-in-one solution (Naim, Cambridge etc). My question in regards to music/ streaming quality would be, if there are any general downsides of an external streaming module vs an all in One solutions ? (assuming similar overall budget spent). Would appreciate your thoughts on that, Many thanks

    Hi Hans, excellent review! Thank you for your video. I just purchased one based on your review.
    The ongoing discussion about MQA (I watched your earlier video) got me thinking about "distortion" in the entire audio chain. In this case "distortion" being any deviation from the source (example chain: voice or musical instrument-->recording space-->microphone-->a/d-->recording system-->mixing-->mastering-->rendering-->data transportation-->d/a-->amplification-->speaker-->playback space-->human ear.
    Do you have or are you aware of any scientific studies on how the human ear system physically distorts sound?

    Great video! In terms of indexing and general operation. How much is the difference between the NODE and Node 2i, given the much faster CPU.
    Also do you think getting a POWERNODE N330 would be a more musical amp compared to my Yamaha 303? Wonder about AB vs Digital amp.
    In fairness the 303 sounds great with my entry level Monitor Audio 200’s.

    Hello Mr. Beekhuyzen, First off, I am a new and very happy subscriber. Thank you so much for such an amazing content. Bravo! After many years, I am coming back into the hobby, and I am looking for a simple solution for my listening needs and wants. I am considering the new Powernode 2021 to drive a pair of Q Acoustics 3020i. It is not a super high end system, but it should serve me well for a few years. Do you think buying the new Powernode model is worth or should I just get the 2i and save some money? In addition, would the 2i suffice to dive the 3020is? Hello Hans, thank you for yet another thorough in depth review, I have a question for you to help me reach audioNirvana:
    I have my system and especially my streamer (old Node 2i which I'll be upgrading to this new model) far from my internet modem, two floors upstairs. I wonder which internet connection option would sound better and have less jitter for this device in particular:
    1. A Wifi mesh with direct wifi connection to the Node 2i
    2. A Wifi router upstairs to convert the signal from the wifi mesh into Ethernet and then to the node 2i
    3. A couple of fibre-optic media converters, from my modem downstairs and then into Ethernet to the node 2i upstairs via optical fiber cable of course
    Thanks for any guidance

      Fibre will not make much of a difference on this level of equipment. Don't get me wrong, the Node is great but to have fibre make a difference you need to look at a network player of at least triple the price. Just use the wifi mesh. That probably will do a great job (depending on the number of other wifi base stations in your direct surroundings.

    Hello Hans! Thank you so much for what you do. I recently got back into listening to music in a way I did 20 or so years ago. I've watched this video a few times and I have a question that might be an easy one for you. I have a Bluesound Node, Apple TV 4K (2nd Generation) and a 2022 LG OLED evo C2 TV (as well as a Leak Stereo 130, and Wharfedale Denton 85th Anniversary speakers). All possible equipment is connected with Cat 7 Ethernet cables. Currently I have the following configuration - LG TV HDMI eARC port has an HDMI eARC cable connected to the Bluesound Node. The Node is connected to the Leak Stereo 130 via quality RCA cables, and the Denton 85 speakers are connected to the Stereo 130 AUX ports via high quality cables. The area that's unclear to me is if I should run the eARC cable from the Apple TV 4K (2nd Generation) to the Node. I use the Apple TV for 95% of my viewing (Netflix, AppleTV+, HBO Max) and I also like to use the Tidal app on the Apple TV so that I can see what's playing, which the LG TV obviously does. Given I don't use any native LG TV apps or use the LG TV for much more than a monitor, I'm wondering if I'm missing out on better sound by not having the eARC cable go from the Apple TV to the Node. I've looked far and wide on UA-cam and watched some of the best UA-cam Hifi people/Channels, and they get so close to addressing this, but I've not found the answer. I suspect I'm not the only one with this question. So, if time permits in your schedule, I'd be very appreciative if you shared your thoughts. Thank you so much in advance! Warmly, Dan

      In priceable the sound of the Apple TV, when connected to the tv, should be relayed to the Node. Whether that sounds ok depends on the quality of the tv and the cabling used. Why not just try and listen.

The NAD C358 streamer has had some problematic quality control issues that aren't found with the Bluesound Node 2.1 (at 1/3 the cost). It's going to be interesting to see what shakes out over time.

    Dear Hans, thank you for your wonderful content.
    I want to choose betweeb 2i and new node. Can I request your advise on 2 points please.
    I have a Denafrips Ares 2 DAC. If I chose to use it over the internal Dac's , does it matter which version of Bluesound i use. If there is no perceptible difference in audio quality, i might as well buy a 2nd hand 2i and save money. Can you please advise.
    Also if you have experience with Ares 2, do you think it may be better to get rid of it. Because the new node's internal DAC is atleast as good as the as the Ares 2.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  2 роки тому

      The question should be if either the old or the new Node have digital outputs that do justice to the qualities of the Ares II. The difference between the two Nodes is rather small sound wise. But I think the Ares II can perform better if a better digital source is used. The problem is that the BlueSound user interface is very good. Perhaps you can find a second hand NAD streamer that uses the Bluesound technology.

    Hi Hans, a little off topic, but I wonder if you could do a video on how - in general - to best divide your money between the different equipment? There could be some general ballpark "rules" for this, perhaps in percentage. For instance, if I own a E7000 integrated amp, in what range should I look for loudspeakers? Would E3500 do, or E7000, or E10 000 range or more be more appropriate? Would a E1700 DAC do, or would I miss out on the potential of that amp? What about cables? I know the only way is really to test for oneself, but it is hard and very timeconsuming, especially on heavy gear imported from abroad, without some general idea. Thanks.

    Very informative indeed. Have been contemplating on purchasing. Query...what capacity HDD can the Node handle i.e would it be able to read a 4 or 5TB external hdd connected via USB?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  3 роки тому

      It's not the HD capacity but the amount of metadata that defines the capacity. So if you use very large cover pictures, that will limit the amount of tracks that can be indexed. My test HD has 30,000 tracks and they were all indexed. The capacity must be more, I guess.

    • @TomislavCapan
      @TomislavCapan 3 роки тому

      @Hans - has it been indexing your hard disk connected to Node USB port, or on your Samba shared network drive? As what I remember from earlier on, it was not indexing directly connected USB sticks, and I never tried the actual HDD (I assume it's the same); only network drives were indexed. It would be great to know if that had changed or is it still network drives only.

      and received this:
      Hello there,
      Thank you for contacting the Bluesound Support Crew.
      Here's what we know about the new Node(N130);
      1.) The NODE (N130) features a PCM 5242 Burr-Brown DAC, which has been implemented with a differential output design in an endeavor to cancel out as much unwanted noise as possible. In comparison, the NODE (N130) measures in at -113dB SNR and 0.002% distortion due to this change, a notable improvement over the NODE 2i's -110dB SNR and 0.005% distortion.
      2.) As always, a faster processor means a faster brain - we continue to try and future-proof our products by over spec-ing them for whatever tomorrow brings - so that remains to be seen.
      3.) We made some tweaks last time around and are very happy with the power supply in the NODE 2i and continue to use it in the new NODE (N130).
      4.) We have also added a proximity sensor to the new NODE
      5.) Audio can be outputted via the USB 2.0 port on the new NODE
      6.) We have also added an HDMI eArc port for Audio Input to the NODE
      There should be an upgrade to the overall sound quality of the unit with the new and improved hardware implemented in the unit. However, we do not know the overall limitations of the USB out from the unit and we await the launch to understand the unit better.

      Thanks for #LivingHiFi.
      Ruddho
      The Bluesound Support Crew
      my notes:
      1.) I don't know if I would be able to hear the difference between -110dB and -113dB SNR nor 0.005% and 0.002% distortion...
      2.) As you stated in your video, the 2i processor is already faster than necessary.
      3.) the power supplies definitely looked different in your video, is your 2i an early version ? I haven't taken mine apart.
      4.) proximity sensor; ahh, good in the dark with those extra controls but I never touch my 2i directly
      5.) Potentially Great, is it going to be better than the Coaxial S/PDIF output ??? I'm sure someone knows somewhere...
      6.) I use strictly with a 2 channel music only system, I'm sure someone will appreciate the benefit...
      7.) and they just all together neglected the "Node 2i USB ever be capable of digital audio signal" question...
      Anyway, Thanks for your Exceptional Videos Mr. Hans !!!

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

      That's not the downside. The Node has a proper DAC for the money. But some upgrade the DAC and forget that, although fine for the money, the digital signal coming from the Node is the limiting factor. So they buy a DAC and only get a return of investment that - depending on the quality of the DAC, will be limited.
