Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on UA-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over seven years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
That puts a whole new spin on the phrase, "sometimes you're the windshield and sometimes you're the bug." Glad it wasn't traumatic!

Having followed S&G since their days in the Northfield apt, can recall videos where talking for even short periods was such an effort for Shane. Hannah was, essentially, 'their voice.' Fantastic to see him, now, effortlessly and smoothly relating this hysterical tale, having a balanced conversation. He also seems stronger in his posture, more controlled in his head/neck as well as his voice. 😊

I’m so glad you have another couple, who can truly understand your challenges, to hang out with.
Interacted couples, and people with disabilities, don't require friends that share the same lifestyles. We are able to relate to, and be friends with, people who have no experience with disabilities. Our disability is not who we are and it doesn't consume our lives....we are regular people made up of the same stuff as anyone else.

Pretty crazy funny mishaps in life are just a little more special with the way we have to deal. I’m writing a journal/book for my grandchildren. Hopefully the chapters continue for many more years. Thank you for making these video's. I really enjoy them. I relate to many of them in many ways even though I am older then the 2 of you. I am 45 now. I have CP I have been fortunate enough to be married for almost 16 years to my wife Leslie and my daughter Madelynn who is in the picture with me is now 14 and a Freshman in High School. It is cool to watch the 4 of you just living your lives doing as many normal things as accessibility allows. Yes I have CP but I run my own business, I am the Treasurer of my church, I am also on Town Council for my town. So I lead as active of a life as I can. I am glad I didn't listen to everyone that told me that I would be single all my life and just sit around and collect disability while I waited to die basically.
I am thankful my life has amounted to far more then that. Carry on you all. Thank you again for the content and God Bless you all!!!

I have functional neurological disorder now. Eventually I will be progressing into a electric wheelchair....and hoping by then I will meet the love of my life to help me thru this. Hope you guys can reach out this has been a awful year from lack of transportation for disabilities, losing the ability to drive, not able to work, medical toxic gaslighting, malpractice, neglect, abuse and more. I would get so much joy seeing two women riding on their husbands wheel chairs honestly this was amazing. A refreshing take on life. And apparently bird poop on your head is very good luck. The fly well that is just wonderful that you can laugh it off I am laughing to with you. Because bugs happen! S H I t happens. And if we just get so mad at it well, that does not do us any good. This is the perfect attitude. If it make you feel any better Shane if things are going to go wrong they happen to me to. You do not stand alone. Years ago something like that happened to me when I was out walking with my then-husband. I was laughing and a stupid bug flew right in my mouth. It landed on my tongue, and it was so gross! I spit it out immediately, and I felt like my mouth was contaminated. I couldn't wait to get home, brush my teeth, and swish with mouthwash!
