Episode Notes:
1. Saturn and XB360 versions running on real hardware.
2. The Saturn version of VF3 was rumored to use an accelerator cartridge to help the Saturn render the polygons. I'd love to see how far that got in development.
3. There was also a version in the works that was basically just like VF2 here. No 3D backgrounds but running at 704x480 and 60fps. Would have liked to have seen that as well.
4. A PC version was based on the Saturn release at the time. It allowed for higher polygon fighters but still had 2D backgrounds.
5. Virtua Fighter 2 used the knowledge gained from Virtua Fighter Remix and the creation of the SGL(Sega Graphics Library). Had Sega been properly prepared at launch with this knowledge, 3D development could have been so much easier for 3rd parties.
6. VF2's engine is not perfect. It still has texture and polygon glitches here and there. It also has hitching and slowdown, though infrequently.
7. This also includes the 2.1 update from the arcade. You turn it on in the options and it tweaks the gameplay and AI a bit.
8. There are a number of Easter eggs in this one. You can play against the letters character from the name input screen, and you can use Dural.
9. While I appreciated Sega's attempt to bring 3D caged fighting and light sourcing into the Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix engines, I still prefer the high rez look of this.
10. This game is a nightmare to capture for. The Framemeister hates it. It switches resolution frequently, so there are 5 second or more video drops all the time. Dead or Alive is another one that does it terribly.
I Will never forget that summer day when working at toys r us out of nowhere the sega saturn showed up!
I hear you, Man. I also remember: you took the ticket from the slip: Its how we use to buy the games and also Pre-order....But 399.99? Damnnn, man :)
Ha well good thing you worked at Toys R Us and not KB Toys
@@G18999 Funcoland
@@G18999 I would've loved to work at KB Toys in the 90s. Every aisle was epic to walk through. Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, Terminator, Aliens vs Predator and so much high quality.
@@pizzahighfive2612 I agree! KB Toys was amazing! My comment was in regards to KB Toys refusing to carry the Sega Saturn because of it's botched American launch
The Saturn gets a lot of bad press but when I went from Mega Drive/Genesis games to Virtua Cop 2, Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally and Daytona, it truly felt like an arcade machine at home.
My Sega Saturn came with three free games and a demo disc. Virtua Cop, Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2 were the free games. The demo disc was called the Bootleg Disc or something like that. Everyday after school, my brother and I would spend hours playing the Saturn. Especially VF2. Man, this game was super fun. Thanks for the video, it was awesome!
Yo I got and still have the same bundle! Along with Virtua Cop 2 and the Saturn Stunner Gun! 😅
Man I would spend hours on all three games, all my favorites!
Bro same exact thing here. Word for word. Same exact thing.
I got my Sega Saturn in late 1998 from my dad I was 7 at the time. My sister and I played that bootleg disc and had a blast with nights too. At that time the Dreamcast was coming soon and Saturn's were cheap 👍 Virtua fighter 2 was my favorite game and I had alot of fun it looked so real. This is the game that got me into fighters.
Yeah, I remember SEGA releasing that bundle. I was extremely tempted to have my dad buy it for me. But when it came time I chose the Sony PlayStation.
@@MrSamPhoenix I actually had a Saturn for a while until two (2) PS1 games made me switch over to Sony - those games were Time Crisis and Metal Gear Solid. That's when I understood that Sega were fighting a losing battle.
Your channel is everything in my life. You have no idea how much I love and appreciate your work.
Thank you my friend. I appreciate you watching.
@@SegaLordX great video I luv the 3 in 1 pack version with vf2
VF2 just absolutely blew my mind back in the day. I could just stare at the arcade attract mode forever. Seeing it on the Saturn for the first time just totally made my jaw drop. Such an amazing accomplishment, and agree it's the most impressive Saturn game graphically. Great timing on this video. Just purchased the PS3 digital version (due to PS3/vita store closing announcements) and the game still looks great. Brings back lots of great memories.
I remember seeing it in the arcade for the first time. Just stood there in utter amazement.
My first 3d game i ever played.
I can't find it in the store is it USA only?
You can play it in yakuza kiwami 2 as well :)
Got the arcade port on Xbox. It looks so good and plays great.
The Saturn tends to get underrated but I had some good times with it as a kid. Virtua Fighter 2 is still my second favorite childhood 3d fighter after the original SoulCalibur on the Dreamcast
SoulCaliber on DC may be a perfect game.
Agree
If you loved SC and VF2, You should check out Fighter Megamix as well. Dumbed down graphics for Sh**loads of extras like chars. and modes.
Fighters Megamix & Last Bronx are two more 3d fighters that I also enjoyed on the Saturn. Megamix had a ton of characters & some fun game modes. I loved the anime intro & accompanying Japanese pop song featured in Last Bronx. That's what I remember most fondly about it even though it was a pretty fun game as well
@@BigSnipp true, I remember it getting perfect scores from every gaming magazine.
Awesome episode! Virtua fighter 2 was a great playing game!
This brings me back, I want to go back to these days so bad. This makes me happy and extremely sad at the same time. I love your channel, you have gotten me through some very rough times, thank you.
I hear you I want back in that point of time
VF2 is $5 on Xbox (when you buy it you can download and play it on an Xbox 360, Xbox One, or Xbox Series Concole) - so if you have one of those consoles you can enjoy a good port of the game :)
@@fattony75 This and PSN.
VF 2 on the Saturn was AMAZING man, i played the heck out of this game with my brother as a kid. It was crazy how close to the arcade version it was, no one thought it would come out as well as it did. It really showed what the Saturn was truly capable of.
I have the exact same story as you . Played all the time with my brother. We also played World Series baseball 2 a lot. Literally the best childhood memories
Take care legend
Me and my brother played the shit out of the arcade one, then the saturn and pc ports.
This what games you will see if the Saturn stuck they with their original NA launch date. Also in the following year and two you will see 98 like quality games on this system too.
Played with my college buddies to death. They used to come over all the time. Mini tournaments. So many good memories.
Man I just can’t explain it, but why were the sounds, smells, visuals and creativity just much better in the 90’s? Like everything just felt so much more wholesome and less complicated then it is now.
One of the greatest sound tracks of all time. It has never left my radio player. “Better run home to momma now.”
The first new game and console I ever owned. I saved forever and bought both the Saturn and VF2 myself. So many hours poured into this.
The miracle port! One hell of a port all things considered. Seeing this running on a Saturn back in the day was mind blowing. Especially after the lacklustre Daytona USA launch port.
And one hell of a game in general. Still one of my favourite fighting games ever.
Including the botch and butchered vf1 port that made the 32x look better in the eyes of the public. Shameful.
@@maroon9273 Nah, it looks way better than the 32x version. It has problems but overall does look better than that version.
How ? So much quality stuff on an almost daily basis??? Huzzah!!
Thanks for the kind message.

You can't expect him to reply to every comment or even half of them, that could potentially take a few hours.
Ive left several comments over the last year or so and he's replied to 3 or 4 of them so....
you had to be alive and in an arcade in 1994 to truly appreciate how visually stunning the arcade game was for its time
This must have been so awesome back in 95. Somewere in my mind I still think of these consoles as high tech beasts. I never had a 32 bit system so back in the day you could only imagine how awesome the games were.
Virtua Fighter is the single most game that drew me to arcades as a kid. I mean, I always loved the arcades, but seeing Virtua Fighter running for the first time was stunning. Then seeing it and the sequel running on my home Saturn console was equally stunning. Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA, and Virtua Cop were the games I got at the same time as my first Saturn. And I still enjoy playing all of them.
Thank you so much for this review. It brings back so many memories ! The first game I could afford on the Saturn (the console was expensive as hell).
I spent so much time on this one. The gameplay was perfect, unforgiving against stronger opponents yet always fair with somewhat of a moderately high learning curve.
I can't count how many hours I spent on this game and how much progress I made from beginner to the series to a competent player. A wonderful journey.
Thank you for the review !
I bought it on release, and have never had a complaint about what was cut. Honestly, I always thought that it was a huge step towards the home versions of games being closer to their arcade version.
Did you know an Anime company named KSS made a fighting game named Goiken Muyou Anarchy in the Nippon based on Virtua Fighter 2 engine on Sega Saturn?
Akira's theme is one of the greatest pieces of video game music I've ever heard. Love it.
Virtua Fighter 2 was my very first Sega Saturn fighting game that got me started on the fighting game genre. Sega was and is the TRUE grandfather of 3D arcade-style fighting games.
Great upload SLX, this video brought back so many fond memories. Sega Rally, Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona were the reasons I got an import Saturn in the first place.
Great quality content as always, thanks man.
Virtua Fighter 2 was a huge jump from the Saturn VF1 (the original release, I didn’t have the upgraded VF1). But my personal favorite 3D fighter on Saturn was Last Bronx.
I would have loved to have seen VDP2 used in a similar way for VF3. Last Bronx nailed the backgrounds.
That's a funny way of spelling Fighters Megamix!
VF2 music, my favorite soundtrack to workout.
If you could actually use Akira well in this game, and grab their fists as they tried to punch, it was a whole 'nother level of satisfaction.
Pai was another one that could be nasty with the reversals.
@@SegaLordX lau ....
@@SegaLordX back back punch .....flip
When I mastered him back in the day, I used to do that very often :) It's still my favourite fighting game character to this day. Followed close by Jacky and Sarah :)
I spent so much time on Akira’s 3 hit combo, but still couldn’t master it lol
When I first booted up VF2 on my Saturn, I had never seen or played the arcade version. That made the port seem even more amazing; I was just playing this amazing game with nothing else to compare it to.
This was the absolute must have for me in 95!!! On my life I this was all I wanted... I was so blown away by this game and I still play it regularly to this day... I love that graphical style
This game was the reason I bought a Saturn, after seeing VF2 in the arcade.
@@drspod This game just takes me back... It's so mind blowing plus the music is AMAZING!!! I never cared about a PlayStation because of this game
VF2 is the apex of fighting games.and we used to chuckle at them buttonmashing Tekken players :)
playing Virtua Fighter 2 in 1997: "Better run home to mama now"
Playing it in 2021: "I don't make it a habit to fight the elderly"
😢
🤣😂
lol
Yeah, I feel old too 😁
I am in full sentiment with this video~ When I got my Saturn one of the first games I owned for it was Virtua Fighter 2 and it quickly became one of my favorite games ever! After that I went back and got VF Remix, Fighting Vipers and I would rent VF Kids and Fighters Megamix all the time from the video store. I have fond memories of my Saturn~ I loved putting the discs in my cd player to listen to the music. I am still a VF fan to this day and videos like these are a joy to watch~
I bought a Saturn just for this game in 95!
I was a TREMENDOUS VF fan back then (And I still am. Looking forward to the new VF5 remaster or whatever they're doing). Most of my friends had Playstations, and I did like Tekken 2 and 3, but VF2 just shut doubters up the moment you showed it to them.
Virtua Fighter 2 is the greatest fighting game of all time in my humble opinion. I had this game for the Saturn and loved it!
IT ACTUALLY IS NOT SIR OR MAAM.
Ever heard of Cosmic Carnage?
Hmm?
It's amazing that's for sure, grew up playing it religiously but my personal favorite is VF 5 Final Showdown.
@@orlanzo2621 I really want to get that game!
@@Canadian_Gamer You're in luck man, previously it was stuck on PS3 (where i still play it online until this day), but apparently it's getting a new release as "VF 5 Ultimate Showdown" for current consoles.
No way?!
I grew up through this era of gaming. Among my friends and classmates, the Saturn was pretty disappointing compared to the Playstation. VF1 was unimpressive compared to Toshinden graphically, and Daytona USA was one big visual glitch compared to Ridge Racer. Most people thought Panzer Dragoon was just weird. However, when Sega got their second wind with VF2, Virtua Cop, and Sega Rally a lot of people were really surprised at how powerful the Saturn was. However, by then they had Playstations or were waiting for N64. Sega goofed on this.
Sweet . Great video as always dude.
VF2 us amazing, but I wish it had a cooler end boss and more single player content.
Fighters Megamix took care of most of that.
I will never forget the very first time i saw this gem on my own TV. Just breathtaking! ♥
👍😃
Sarah's theme is amazing and my favorite, when i think of VF2 that music always plays on my mind. Great video.
Man this game brings back so many memories. I swear I played it every day for at at least for years.
Awesome work!
When I was 7, I remember seeing Sega Saturn in the Service Merchandise catalog back in 95. There were screenshots for Virtua Fighter 2 that blew me away. Unfortunately when I saw the console at Walmart for $399, I was not a happy camper. I ended up getting a PlayStation because my parents wouldn’t spend anymore than $300 for a console.
SERVICE MERCHANDISE
almost no one I know remembers this place . I would go there as a kid. It was the only place I ever went to that had MASTER SYSTEM games. It was a place of great joy where I actually could get my hands on a master system game since no one I know had one
I will never forget the day I got the Saturn. My first ‘3D’ system as I call it. Went straight from SNES to this. Pure eye candy to behold this game in my own living room. I barely slept that school night. And it was a joy to brag about it to my friends the next day. Thanks for the awesome content and a trip down memory lane!
This was my childhood, with the SEGA AGES compilation : Outrun, After Burner 2, Space Harrier and later Nights into Dreams.
This is my fav Virtua Fighter and it still looks great today. Something rare when dealing with an early textured poly game. Always liked this series as I’ve always played as a defensive and counter fighting game player. This game was made for that style of play. Button mashers and combo spammers get punished easily in this game.
The two dislikes were from Toshinden fans.
Or may be Tekken
or Dead or Alive
Up to 9 now.
Toshinden, at least the first 3 games were good!!
@matt fahringer Tekken is PlayStation exclusive that Sony marketed as VF rival.
definitely have VF2 in my collection! so many fond memories of playing the game back in the day! it may not have been arcade perfect but I didn't care it was still a blast!
I missed out on Sega stuff back when I was kid, and seeing all the easter eggs in PSO2 has me inspired to play their games. This channel has been great at pointing me in the right directions.
One of my favorite 3D fighting games of all time, the game that sold me on wanting a Sega Saturn when I was a kid. This video came out at the right time for me. Thank you so much.
PS - BLACK CAT MOON, aka Sarah's theme, is probably my favorite tune of the entire soundtrack.
Another great video. Best channel on UA-cam. Love your enthusiasm towards sega.
Got it on saturn and arcade perfect port on ps3
The game, the masterpiece, one of my all time favorite games, I was blown away when I first saw the arcade for the first game, and loved the series since, I got all games, even the Game Gear one, that I bought day one in 1996. This port of VF2 is unreal, and I alternate between it and the arcade.
I will never forget the day i put Virtua Fighter 2 into my Sega Saturn, almost on a par with firing my Saturn on for the first time and playing Sega Rally! I was a massive VS fighter fan at the time, i got really good with Jacky and pulling off some of his fancy moves to finish your opponent off was extremely satisfying. An amazing port of an excellent game that is still well worth playing to this day.
The Game Players magazine LOVED this game. The writers were huge Saturn fans and gave the title a 98% (the only thing keeping it from perfection was the soundtrack being a 9/10 and the only game to ever get a 100% was Mario 64). They said "If you own a Saturn, and don't own VF2, you are just stupid".
94 was an all time great year for gaming
*The most amazing looking and achievement game ever before SHENMUE on DC!* ⭐️
Can't help but notice that Lau showed up in a lot of those clips.
He’s a favorite of mine. Wolf and Jacky too.
Its not law.
Its Lan Di.
XD
One of the Saturn games, that blew my mind...
And it tells something, when I say that the first time I saw it, was when I got myself a Saturn... Something like, what, 5 years ago maybe? It still looks brilliant and plays like a dream. And that's a testament, how great of a port it is...
We can now run and play VF2 on our phones using emulator nowadays. Knowing this made me happy.
Sega Model 2 Emulator is where it is. VF2 or Last Bronx in 4k ( with 4:3 aspect ratio of course, stretching is ugly) looks awesome. Especially because emulator by default applies filters only to the floor texture and models, leaving background and HUD intact.
Any home port of Sega arcade game in the '90s is a must own.I was blown away by Daytona USA in my home as packaging game on my Saturn, thankfully I never listened to any of its critics back in the day.
Still have Virtua Fighter 2 for my Saturn! Played the shit out of it as a kid.
Akira, Jacky and Lion were my guys!
my neighbors had this game - its one of the games that changed everything for me. 3d graphics at a smooth 60 fps, I hadn't seen anything like it. Its only now, over 20 years later, when I come to the realization I've only played VF2 a handful of times. When we got our Saturn, we never ended up getting Virtua Fighter 2 (or the other game that blew my mind at the time, Virtua Cop). Ended up replacing the saturn with a n64 and never even thought about it until now. the games we had for the saturn were trash, I'm surprised I still even liked videogames after that.
I stumbled upon VF2 via Yakuza : Like a Dragon arcade mini-games. This game enabled me to play old arcade games from SEGA that i would have never been able to play in my life before. Its crazy when you think about it. ^^
In all i am quite impressed by enjoyment i had by trying them out, and finally it led to me to your channel. Your quality content earned you a new subscriber sir !
the non-3D background trick they took was absolutely clever. Superb port considering how much powerful AM2 Model was compared with the SS
Me and my brother played this yesterday for like 3 hours.... it was amazing fun, so many recorded clips.... so many hilarious moments.
Great video. You should do more like this format of really going into 1 game in depth reviews
Such a pity the xbox 360 version doesn't allow for the red book audio
My favorite 3d fighting game series. Played this all the time on my Saturn.
VF2 was the reason I got a Saturn back in the day. I was so happy to finally play my favorite arcade game at home. I played it till my eyeballs fell out. Akira's music still gets me pumped to this very day!!!!💪💪💪👊👊👊
Ah, the thrill of landing Wolf's giant swing move... especially in 2-player mode!
Great review.
Definitely one of the best channel focus on retro
It bothered me back then that the backgrounds were not 3D but I can see why they did it now and I think they did a great job overall.
Virtua Fighter 2 was the first game I played on my Sega Saturn. One of the best fighting games of all time. Thank you for doing this video. Virtua Fighter 2 is one of my most beloved video games.
I skipped VF1 and ended up with the Saturn VF2 and boy was it a worthy purchase! My Saturn was hardly turned off after the release. From the Animations to the gameplay and varying characters this was such a win! Amazing work as always SLX!!
Oh yeah. I first played the original VF at a convenience store near where I lived. Since I had only played Street Fighter 2 by that time, I really enjoyed the 3D polygonal approach, and the more realistic fighting. It wasn't until early 1997 when I bought my Saturn, and it came with Sega Rally Championship and a 3-pack featuring Virtua Cop, Daytona USA and of course, VF2, all for free.
Ultimately I played VF2 most out of all of them. And to this day I still have my original Saturn hooked up, as well as all those games. And VF2 is still a blast to play, though these days I also have VF2 on my XB1.
I remember seeing Jeffrey doing a mid kick followed up by a Powerbomb in the VF Remix intro, i was trying to do this in both Remix and VF2 all the time. Sega should absolutely do a new Virtua Fighter game
Used to play that game on the Saturn. Had one of the best soundtracks. Only $5 dollars on X-Box 360 & plays on X-Box One. Wish it came out as an SEGA AGES game for Nintendo Switch along with other classics sega games like Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Virtua Cop, Sonic Adventure games, Nights into Dreams, & so on. That would have been great for Switch owners to play on the go. Awesome video.
I must confess that I'm a PlayStation guy but it always disappointed me that Sony preferred higher resolution than a decent 60 fps, and Sega was always ahead of its time even when it involved frames per second
I remember as a kid, being so blown away by the AM2 cabinets that I couldn't fully concentrate on anything
SLX you rock. Best retro game channel on UA-cam. Also, I loved this game haha.
Enjoyed the video! Hope you’ll make VF3 review soon. Haven’t seen any reviews of it around
I bought my saturn about 6 month's after it was discontinued. Little did I know it was the Beginning of my VG collecting. I bought this and kept it new for a while until finally opening it out of temptation. Didn't know Saturn games could run at 60fps.
"3. There was also a version in the works that was basically just like VF2 here. No 3D backgrounds but running at 704x480 and 60fps. Would have liked to have seen that as well."
What exactly does this mean? I don't understand. You said VF2 is already running in high res mode at 60fps with no 3D backgrounds on Saturn
VF3.
Quality stuff as usual. Let's get SegaLotd x to 100k subscribers.
Aye! This is a really nice review Sega Lord X. I really enjoyed watching it. And this game VF2 and it's gameplay, is a definite classic. And the music in this game is super cool. All of a sudden while watching VF2 in this review, I got back a strong taste of the 90's gaming scene again. Epic times to be a kid.👍😎
I liked my Saturn. I got it literally a year after it was discontinued - however - for my eighth birthday. Because my family could only afford to fund for me one console at the time, I ended up giving it up and selling it to buy an N64 instead. Although I don't regret my N64 one bit, I certainly wish I could've kept the Saturn, I actually had this and Sega Rally championships at the time too. I wasn't that good at SRC, but I enjoyed that and Virtua fighter none-the-less. I was certainly blown away by the graphics. I bough another Saturn about ten years ago, with Tomb raider, virtua cop 2, virtua fighter 2, SRC, Loaded, D, and the Die Hard Trilogy. It stopped working a little over four years ago, and keep meaning to replace it again, someday.....someday
The best looking 3D fighter that generation by far. So smooth and crisp.
I'd say Tekken series was equally great looking
@@alex.starostin Tekken 3 is an incredible game, however looks wise it's a lower resolution 384x480 (nearly half the vertical Res) and very jagged to say it came out 2 years later, lovely shading and lighting though.
VF2 running in its high resolution mode 708x480 on Saturn at that flawless 60fps is just stunning for the time, the closest the PlayStation got to that I would say is Tobal 2. Purely talking about looks of course not gameplay or anything like that.
@@alex.starostin I wouldn't.
akira's ride the tiger theme always pumps me up
My mate and I purchased a saturn together, because it was $800 aud when released, we couldnt believe our eyes when we saw VF2, it was around of the release of mario 64 in which had me hooked.
I didn't get hooked until VF2 came out, the first one didn't impress me with the blocky fighters when you had games like Mortal Kombat and Primal rage right beside it. The animations got me on VF2 though, I used to love watching Shun Di perform his demonstration, and I loved to play the most with Akira, and he's still my favorite.
This was the game i got with my Saturn (and the pack-in Daytona USA). I specifially asked for VF2 because the guy in the toystore thought i wanted VFRemix.
Awesome game!
I remember the insane throw kage maru could pull off, throwing people up in the air and following up with a spinning suicide drop back down to earth!!! Insane
This is the first video to ever make me want to pick up a Virtua Fighter game. Guess I have to now!
Yes, this was one of the first 3 games I got with the Saturn in December of 95, along with Sega Rally and Panzer Dragoon. I played this one the most though. It's funny that even though the game has a lower polygon count than the arcade, I prefer the Sega Saturn's use of Gouraud shading to make their joints look less blocky.
I bought a Saturn mostly because I wanted to play this at home. There was a day in the arcade when I got a 21 win streak playing as Jacky, it was all eyes on the machine while I beat the hell out of everyone, lol. Good days. Last year I tried to play single player mode and I couldn't even beat Lion haha. It was also cool to have a mode on Saturn in which the machine would learn your playing style and adapt. One of the best ports I've ever seen
Thank you for giving this series some love. It's a shame how SEGA nowadays don't know what to do with their IP's. Let's hope Yu Suzuki and his new team can give us VF6 someday.
I still have this game. It was always one of my favorite fighting games.
Never had a Saturn
Played this at the arcade at the mall.
Naming all the consoles that I had....
SNES,PS1,Dreamcast,GamecubePS2,Xbox,Xbox360,PS3,3ds,Switch,and PS4,oh yeah...the WII.
I play it on the SSF emulator all the time. It's a solid port man I love even it's setbacks. It really showed what the Sega Saturn was capable of.
One reason to leave a sticker on a game box is if you got it at an amazing price. My copy of VF2 still has the ¥100 price sticker from when I bought it, less than $1.
