Episode Notes:
1. Captured on the Mega SG.
2. Playing on easy ends the game before the final battle. A message pops up telling you to play it on a higher difficulty.
3. You can play this on all modern formats. PC, Switch, Xbox One/SX, and PS4/5.
4. Like the first, there is a power rating that is based on how you perform. It doesn't save this so I always found it pointless.
5. Hard setting does change up enemy counts and location. The ending does not change, however.
6. Dark Guld is the new bad guy here, while in the arcade Revenge of Death Adder, the bad guy from the first returns.
7. This would be the last time all three of these heroes would return in playable form together.
8. Mega Play and Mega-Tech arcade machines were never released in the US officially. I've seen them before, but they tend to be rare.
9. If you want a cart for your collection, loose it goes for around $20. A complete in box copy can be as much as $60+ if its in really good shape. - Ігри
Golden Axe 2 is a very underrated game. One of the best soundtracks of the 16 bit era!
This game still amazes me. The music, the atmosphere, the adventure mood. The travel you do and then you have to rest to the next day... it is a "real" journey at magic medieval times. Every critics about it make me sad. I love the game with real passion.
Sega found a way to turn an RPG like Final Fantasy into a Beat Em Up and then based it on Conan The Barbarian. They were the king of innovation back then. They waste all of their potential on Sonic now, imo.
Golden axe 2 stage one music gives me such a strong sense of nostalgia.. Too op
"Enemies aren't quite as stupid in this one."
*Sees three enemies walk into a pit right after another.*
The music in Golden Axe II is sensational
This was my brothers favourite game on Sega Megadrive and i agree with you the music is sensational!!! Φανταστικό από κάθε άποψη!! :)
totally agree! that title theme was so epic!
Me too!
Meh! Not as good as the original! It felt thrown together.
I like the intro but wasn't crazy how it jumped from sounding like Conan to not Conan.
I always loved that art cover since my youth
Same. Boris Vallejo is an awesome artist
Sega Lord X is a national treasure
World treasure! ....wait....Galaxy! 🛸👽

International I would say. Greetings from Belgium 😊
Astro City Mini gave us the oppurtunity to play Revenge of Death Adder. I'm thankful for that.
@Brian Babin I'm a complete retard when it comes to MAME. Plus I can never find the roms.
I'm hoping it means we get a bunch of/all those games onto all consoles in the way of a collection.
(I mean releasing an Astro City collection digitally would be very smart but sometimes Sega just leaves money on the table for no reason)
@@FloridaEbikes ok. Thanks
This was one of the first games I played on Genesis. It will always be one of my favorites. Even more than the first.
Naofumi Hataya, composer of the Sonic CD JP soundtrack, composed this game's OST, with brilliant results 👏
I loved the music on both Golden Axe 1 and 2 but it was the port of part 1 on the Sega CD that had some amazing music.
The Mega Drive Soundchip may was inferior to the one Nintendo used within the SNES. But man, if someone was capable of handling the music on the Mega Drive well enough, some great things were possible. And the music from Golden Axe stood out. "Path of Fiend" from the first game and "Ruins" from the second are among my most beloved 16 Bit tracks. This music is pushing you forward and as a kid I really thought this music is pshing me to a fight between life and death. And over 25 years later, this soundtrack still holds up so well. It's nost just nostalgia, I really love the musiv on the Mega Drive. Even Mortal Kombat had a far superior soundtrack on the Mega Drive compared to the SNES version.
@@TheAufziehvogel it was not inferior it was supperior due to real yamaha synth chip insted of lofi pcm sampled snes chip.. just play some games on both systems with modern hifi or sound bar and you'll see
That soundtrack was killer and addictive. The best thing about the Genesis were all the two player co-op titles like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe. Meant me and my sister were playing together instead of fighting, so my mom found the Genesis to be a worthy investment in her sanity. Golden Axe II and Streets of Rage 2 were on constantly.
NES and even SNES didn't have very many co-op games. I'm trying to create a co-op space game for the NES. Development has been difficult but the co-op does work.

Dude misses his shot, "I have nothing left to live for!"
had me rolling.
Glad I wasn’t alone haha
As a kid I never played the original in the arcade but got Golden Axe II along with a few other games with our Genesis in xmas 92. Still love it, such good music
I loved the "blegh" deaths
Got Golden Axe 2 as a birthday gift back in 93 and I couldn't be happier.
All 3 Golden Axe Games are good!
Everytime I get a notification of SLX it immediately takes the edge off the work day knowing that I'll have something to watch when I get home.
Golden axe really needs to make a comeback. The arcade game never got a port I miss that ol barbarian type action
I'm glad this game gets a bit of love here. I remember renting this one quite a lot back in the day. The stage music in the first level has been stuck in my mind ever since I first heard it.

Golden Axe I & II are the most memorable (and probably favorite overall) Genesis games of my youth. Definitely played them the most growing up.
Loved playing this with my best friend when it was new! Still holds up today
Check Golden Axe Myth, a fangame made some years ago that looks and sounds amazing and could have something really special had it been released in the Megadrive/Genesis back in the day.
This is one of my favourite games ever, and definitely my favourite in the series by far. The simple addition of being able to decide which direction to throw enemies makes all the difference for my enjoyment compared to the first. And yes, the music is superb, like you said.
FUN FACT - in the original GA, one of the death samples they used comes from Arnold Schwarzenegger's Commando. If memory serves, its when Matrix drops Sully off the cliff
Lol, 6:00 love how the AI just walks off the edge.
not only did they make the ai smarter, they also made the holes smarter too.
Loving these reviews , taking me back
I freaking love this channel!!! I can't imagine what you'll cover next! Thank you Sega Lord X!
Perhaps the sensational Lunar Eternal Blue on MegaCD ?
Agreed. This guy is like the hardest-working Retro content creator on UA-cam
This is so much better than the first game. So many quality of life improvements..
This was the Golden Axe i have growing up. Great game to play 2P with your brother.
Congratulations on 90K subs, SLX! Your channel is criminally under rated. Keep up the good work because it's starting to pay off👍
Yeah! I love this game! One thing: It has compatibility problems using the 6 buttons pad on Genesis/Mega Drive. You have to hold Mode button before turn on the console. So than 6 button pad wil work.
This tip was in the instructions book, but as a little child i didnt give it attention. I just discovered this tip years before i beated the game. At the time, i beated using the 6 button pad without the right configuration. It was crazy to do, but i did. For you see how i loved this game.
I just played GA2 last week with my nieces, they loved it!
So much content lately, much appreciated during this time 👍✊
The music of this game always blows me away..a pure gem still nowadays!
Magic effects in this one are so nice, especially the fire spells.
Instant Like every video! I remember playing all these games as a kid thanks for bringing these memories back for me:)
Golden Axe 2 was definitely one of the best Genesis games and the soundtrack was excellent.
And as bad as some of the SFX are it's worth it for the "bleh" sound when enemies die, it's just too iconic.
If they ever make another modern Golden Axe there should be an option to include that :D
Possibly one of the most overlooked Genesis sequels, I always enjoyed Golden Axe II myself.
Tower is one of the most beautiful songs in this era of gaming. It's one of the few songs that charge me up making me fight harder. The "bleh" is extremely iconic and hilarious to just do at random times catching people off guard
i still have the original poster of GA2 , it was a small one that came with CVG mag , gosh, that poster is like 30 years old , it is currently on my closet....next to the SMB movie poster......
Boris Vallejo is a master of his craft. Julie Bell can match his style and has since been continuing what her husband started with awesome fantasy art. Boris’ Golden Axe paintings are absolutely amazing!
Good video as usual keep it up man and we'll keep watching them.
I really enjoy your videos. I find your narrative style on them relaxing and it really gives me some appreciation for all the great Sega games that I missed out on growing up. I was a Nintendo kid through and through - not because I disliked Sega - but because I grew up having only one console from each generation.
Thanks Jeff. Glad you find the vids worth watching.
Sega developed some amazing beat'emups including Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Alien Storm.
Once you've tried Revenge of Death Adder there really is no going back to this one.
Stellar soundtrack
The cut-in of the enemy's flesh melting in the arcade game is badass
Seriously that was hardcore.
Revenge of DeathAdder in general is such a kick-ass game. It's ridiculous that it hasn't been released anywhere outside of a little mini console as of yet.
Great video! 👍
Love the box artwork on Genesis titles!
The series (for me) was addicting.
Awesome game play and sound to boot.
Good old days where did you go.
Another gem from SLX
The Boris Vallejo covers are fantastic!
Thanks for the kind word. Glad you enjoyed it.

You are quite welcome.
Honestly, one of the best channels out there. Thank you for everything!
One of my all-time favorite Genesis games.
Great video as always buddy, loved Golden Axe 2 back in the day. Thank you as always for your inspirational videos 👏🏻
I loved Golden Axe as a kid, but never played the sequel. A few years ago when I was watching UA-cam looking for some Genesis games to pick up I began watching a play through of Golden Axe II. Based on the terrible death scream (BLEH!) and the ease of which the player was breezing through screens I almost didn’t give it a chance. Golden Axe II is far superior to the first, and that’s a game I still really enjoy too. The gameplay is far more refined and the music is outstanding. A must own for me.
Love your channel quality chill content.
Thank you.
The music at 9:24 is the End theme /Staff Roll theme for Golden Axe II. Good stuff!
This, along with the original Streets of Rage, was the first game I got on my Sega Genesis back in 1992. I absolutely love this game. Thanks for the great review!
I got Golden Axe II shortly after getting my Genesis and because I had such great memories playing the first one on my friend’s Genesis I was excited to get it and enjoyed playing it over and over again. I saved up my allowance and lawn mowing money and purchased it at Suncoast in our local mall and couldn’t wait to get home and plug it in. It was an amazing time!
There's a couple rom hacks out there for GA2 that improve the colors quite a bit that are worth investigating.
Loved the graphics in the room you encounter the final boss.
Sega has actually been putting out compilations for the past 3 generations, starting with the Sega Classics Collection on PS2 and PSP!
You're prolific and always have something interesting to talk about! This was yet another nice overview.
This game has depth, love this game from My childhood
Golden axe was th first Genesis game I ever got. And man I still love playing it today with my kids, and yes on the exact same High Definition graphics genesis 1
My favorite Golden Axe game, still have my copy from back in the day :)
Couldn't agree more with your opinion on Golden Axe II =) Maybe if you already had the first, it wasn't essential for some fans that already had their fill. But if you didn't own Golden Axe, or just wanted more of that winning formula, this was just gold. I still say the the intro is simply amazing, short but very iconic =)
Kudos for mentioning the soundtrack, guess I was really spoiled rotten with the soundtracks on my Mega Drive collection and wasn't completely aware of it ^^
A very overlooked game.
Thanks for this. The biggest difference in Golden Axe and Golden Axe II was the charm. This title lacked it imho. The best part was in fact the music as you mentioned. It REALLY could've benefited from another layer of scrolling throughout the levels. Some fog effects in level one or parallax scrolling with the background. It just looked drab compared to part 1 imho
To each there own. I feel golden axe looked drab compared to this sequel
man Golden Axe is such an iconic mega drive title - i remember beating the game with my sister so many decades ago - such a blast
one of my earliest gaming memories was at a target in the hood and while my relative was looking at something i stayed in the video game section and watched these kids play golden axe 2...sad to say that target closed down years ago not long after that.
Found a CIB copy of Golden Axe Ii during my first year of retro game collecting for $5. 10 years later and I'm still playing it with multiple completions under my belt. I'm with you when it comes to your views on the game being "too similar" to the first game as I, too, see it as more of a good thing.
One of those games I never got as a kid. Before trading games in became a thing I would get a game on my birthday and Christmas and good or bad I had to love it. And for the most part I grew to love them all but it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized I could just buy all the games I had missed out on. I still need to grab a copy of this
Played the original Golden Axe on the Genesis a whole bunch with a friend but we never got too far because we were dorks. The second one of us hit the other by accident, it was on. From that point on the game was pure PVP until no lives were left.
I used to listen to this OST while reading the manga Berserk, suited it perfectly. As others have mentioned, the soundtrack is sensational.
I replayed Golden Axe 2 recently on a big screen TV in HD. Waow. I keep being baffled by the sheer beauty of this gorgeous game. I love the map when you pass levels. I feel such an intense pleasure whenever I play Golden Axe 2. I own a Mega Drive for these arcade moments.
This was the first game I ever asked for. I got it for my birthday. I used to play it all the time
Nice one. Really need to get this still.
Hey Sega Lord X, really appreciate you making these videos. Just wanted to tell you!
Thanks, man.
IMO, what brings down the graphics quite a bit here is the complete lack of parallax scrolling in all levels other than the cave one. Makes it look almost like a TG16 game. Pretty weird, considering that Genesis VDP did two independently-scrolling background plains seamlessly. The first game had this problem too, with all the parallax effects from the arcade version being missing. Huge contrast with Altered Beast, which actually had more parallax effects in the home version! Still a great game though.
Yeah I never understood why this game had flat unimpressive backgrounds it looked like an Amiga game
We finally played and finished Golden Axe 2 and 3 a month ago with my 15 years old nephew 😊 We played it on the PS4.
0:44 Whoever wrote that review clearly did not complete Golden Axe on the Genesis before writing it. Else they would have mentioned that it had a whole extra level and a new end boss.
1:42 The best part about this opening sequence is that anyone who was playing the game for the first time would have thought that the guy on the throne is Dark Guld. They would probably also not notice that his head...actually isn't a head.
5:54 - 5:57 "The AI isn't as stupid in this one." But the drops are less forgiving to them.
Dark Guld's chamber is one of the best backgrounds in the game.
Cool review.
As for the soundtrack, the original Golden Axe game used only 4 sound channels and it was all FM and the "yell" sound effects pauses the in-game music. The sequel here took advantage of BOTH FM & PSG.
Thanks for the upload.
Loved that game
Agree 100%. Thanks
1:55 Ah yes, the glorious long-legged woman in red, Gillius Thunderhead!
Haha, I'm pretty sure that was one of those, "Do I REALLY want to record again just to match that up a bit better?" moments...
Wow, C+VG brings back memories!
Golden axe was my favorite game in the arcade. Remember playing the original back in ‘89. Was 5 years old and this older kid with his friends called me a “whiz” while they were watching me. Really cool moment for my 5 year old self
Loved this game
Best channel on YT!!
Thanks. Appreciate the vote of confidence.
Golden Axe 2 was among the first games I got for the system. I got the Genesis for Christmas in 1991 with a few games. I got Golden Axe a couple of days later from my "aunt". I was very happy. First, the cover is amazing as you'd expect from Boris Vallejo. I agree with many of your points. The sequel is better than the first in some ways, and inferior in others. I can also understand those that found it too similar to the first, but then some would like that. I do think the music is quite a step up from the original. GA2 is strong in that area. I'm a big fan of the Golden Axe games and love the two arcade games and it feels like GA2 is like a second attempt to provide the arcade game at home on a four-megabit cart in a way that's a bit closer. What I mean is, as good a port as it is, the first Golden Axe on the Genesis has some strange quirks. The control feels a bit off compared to the arcade. The stages were shortened and chopped up which makes the beasts less effective. I like it, but it has some rough edges that they fixed for the second game.
I didn't learn to appreciate that FM synth until much later in life, as the SNES' sampling won me over as a teenager. Now, I find the Genesis sound to really bring in the nostalgia of late '80s arcade games, as it really is more what you heard in games like Time Soldiers, Gondomania, Black Tiger... I don't know that I like it better than the SNES, but it is less of a competition in my mind now and more a different flavor I mightbejn the mood to enjoy. The music here definitely exemplifies that feeling.
I just got one for my collection, and it is great!!
Great video 👍
As the owner of the two games back then, I liked this game a lot. Maybe even more the first one.
"Ah but it's more of the same" but that was exactly what I wanted :)
I just regret not having a bigger cartridge, so it could have more variety
First Genesis game I bought after getting it with Sonic 1 packed in. It was the first really "Arcade" game I owned at home and while the experience was awesome I also realized arcade games are shorter experiences than the best of NES games I had been playing.
love the music in golden axe 2
The music is awesome.
The Golden Axe trilogy is one of the strongest examples of what Sega Greatness was back in the day.
Awesome!!!😎👍🤘
I love this game
Thanks for your cohesive and thoughtful review. Like you mentioned, Sega seemed to have created ambitions for this game with the home console Genesis market during the development of Death Adder at the same time which makes sense. There's been several moments where I love this sequel more than the original port and it fundamentally comes to the magical ability, the combat, and they stuck to the formula. Golden Axe 3 always seems broken and doesn't play well even though that game had branching paths and had more dev time but it it just never clicked with me. GA3 is flaw and the main draw with the early games was the magic and controlls
I love Golden Axe 1 2 and 3
