Kicking off Drum Month in style! 🥁
To celebrate Drum Month, we're hosting special Livestreams every Thursday for the month of May. This week Jared, Brandon & Dave will be joined by an expert guest on the topic of double bass drumming: Julia Geaman. You'll learn the history of the double bass, see some great drumming, and learn a few tricks that will make your double bass playing better!
As double bass playing becomes more common among all genres of music (not just metal), we figured this lesson would be useful for drummers looking to improve their coordination, control, and overall freedom with their sacred pedals.
Plus, we'll be giving away a Yamaha DFP-9C and a Drumeo QuietKick (double pedal version) during the show. Come hang out for a chance to win!

Please have Aquiles Priester on Drumeo!
YES !!!
He'll get on there eventually...
YES!
I really love her approach to teaching them what they want to learn and then what they need to learn along the way. I went about it this way being in concert band and later marching band but also being a "never used the hi hat pedal" drummer. Of course marching helped my left hand match my right for blast beats and probably faster now but applying the rudiments for practicing double bass was a game changer. Also watching your videos helped too.
The DW 5000 is a fantastic double pedal. Super smooth and has a nice sweet spot about 3/4 up the pedal.
Peter Wildoer needs to be on this show along with George Kollias!!
It’s really amazing that RAYMOND HERRERA who founded FearFactory is never mentioned, with him mixing his bass drums electronically so they would be up front and obviously his double bass following the rhythms of the guitar, or vice versa , this dude really was responsible for the sound of double bass today 🤔When you heard HERRERA you knew it was him, Hoglan IMO has always been the best speed metal drummer, He’s been doing his thing since the 80’s and doesn’t cheat, just like those legendary Jazz players who really play 😎what a concept
Herrera, Preister, Donati, Lang, Hoglan some of my double-bass "mentors". Hoglan said he wears ankle weights to beef up his endurance and power on the pedals!
Because he is late they had dudes already doing double bass stuff back in the 70’s then you can go to jazz drummers like Rufus”speedy” Jones who where very masterful with the double bass and stick it up front in their solo’s and doing stuff like hand matching. It’s hard to ever credit one person because he as Drummer has influence
omg Julias shirt
Ok, so in my opinion, the best combination of: speed, dexterity, and independence makes the most well rounded double bass.
With that being said, there was no mention of Thomas Lang (whom you’ve had on Drumeo) the king of double bass trifecta.
Yes, there was also no mention of David Diepold, who got some special skills on his repertoire, check him out: ua-cam.com/video/Qg5by3kqdK8/v-deo.html
@@robvercouteren yes I’ve seen D D do his thing. Yes, he’s very talented as well.
Awesome video, thanks guys and Julia Geaman is my drum/double bass heroine since I saw her in an interview with the legendary Dom Famularo🔥 love them both 🤘
Loved listening and watching. Actually put a smile on my face. :)
I've been hacking away at learning double bass and trying to improve my independence by playing paradiddles and doubles over straight 16ths on the bass pedals so these exercises are absolute gold. Great video and loving seeing Dave and Jared put through their paces 😂
Love to hear the Pound reference. David Stickney's setup is very cool and definitely deserves mention in the double bass conversation. 🤘
DW5000 (doublepedal split into two singles).. tension on springs beyond maximum! Metal AF! Have had it forever and bearings has been changed recently = New pedal again
@drumeo or anyone who knows: where can I watcg the full Cozy Powell-Solo..?? link plz,plz,plz.l.!?!
My first full stream-watch (although after the fact),it was fun!
My double-set-up is a $8 broken pair I found at a fleamarket that I built my own direct-drive to. I don't know what brand they are, but they have an engraved piano and an "i" on them 😄
(works for a beginner just trying to get some consistency and stamina, I reckon)
Love all y'all 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I learned watching Jared the last couple years, love ya Jared 🤘🏻 Awesome video guys.
Guys, I'm such a drum nerd. I love the discussion about which foot to lead with. I noticed Carter Beauford plays left foot lead when he plays crazy licks.
Great Episode.
I was lucky enough to see Louis Bellson in a clinic back in 91. Nicest guy ever to play the instrument (sort of the predecessor to Gregg Bissonette!)
She sure can play, im a new fan she is an amazing player
Hey guys!, lookin good! Thanks for all the great videos... love Simon's double base shuffle groove...it's all about the groove! I use DW9000
I also started drumming when I heard a Gene Hoglan song, and got into it more for double kick than the drums themselves. I heard Strapping Young Lad's City album and just thought "what is that??????!!!!!!!!"
Rudiments on your feet can be great, and personally I feel we should aim for all four limbs with equal ability. Danny Carey has some great stuff for feet + rudiments.
Julia Geaman is a friggin boss -- i love her playing and her attitude.....
On twin kicks, we went with DW9000s, one on each, but they lacked a single shell option (despite advertising) plus don’t do direct drive, so went with Axis A-Longboards and a conversion kit for a single drum. They are great!
Please have Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer) and George Kollias (Nile) on Drumeo..
Love to hear . Very cool setups love it 😍😍💕💕
I'm still playing one of the first DW 5000 double pedals that I bought back in the early nineties
Well done guys.
very cool video, and very long video... and I like they were playing on the double pedal practice on the 16th Kicks! That is rich.
The Pearl demon chain/drive is excellent
That's when I realized my feet were better than the pedal I had, the demon chain brought out finesse that I have, it's so smooth.
The springs are a little too taut for me though, I had to use the old power shifter springs to get the right low tension.
The Tama Dyna Sync destroys the demon drive by leaps and bounds
Wanja Groger should be on Drumeo, he's a cool dude
Tama also do a set of high-speed beaters with 4 removable brass weights. Changing the weights really makes a big difference to the feel of the pedal.
Virgil donati double bass drum freedom great book .
Dw 4000, had it for years, guys.......Would love the new win ped.....Great video
Been playing dbl bass for 10 yrs. The djent grooves rather than metal speed are what turned me on to really learning it. Lamb of God, After the Burial, AAL, Periphery etc. One thing that vastly helped my independence and speed was jumping rope. Started in 2017 3x a week at the gym and went from 160bpm to just under 200 in a year. Learning all of Dance Gavin Dance now.
Dw 9000 . Just got the new version . Played for last ten years on a dw 5000 . Used to have a iron Cobra but prefer dw series .
I'm using Pearl Eliminators. Haven't used Yamaha pedals, but the other brands I have used, the Eliminators have blown them away.
Love what you guys are doing. Thank you. 👍
Same for me! Excellent pedals!
Lulu English from "Gold Frankincense and Myrrh" (GFM) is phenomenal too.
Honestly, I don't like speed trasch a lot ok... I'll have to fire who expresses it well and. Well done Julia.👏😉🥁💪
Pearl eliminators with belts and Tama iron cobra felt beaters works best for me
Great video Guys N Girls :) Loved watching you play Julia, i really need to work on my doubles even after 30yrs playing lol im so lazy, i think maybe being tall is a disadvantage plus i sit low and also i blame my pedals too lol, does anyone use DW8000 longboards ?
Pearl Eliminator! I liked it better than my 5000 pedal. I love that you can change the cams and movable footboard. And it feels lighter than then 5k
That kick sounds killer!! Please do tell how you get that sound
I play a mapex Falcon double pedal setup. But mostly because I'm a mapex fanboy. I don't think it's necessarily the best pedal out there. I don't do any metal double bass stuff. I just use them for trash can endings and the occassional gallop. I have an entry level Yamaha strap drive pedal that I got with an electronic kit, and that thing slays. It's so fast and it barely needs any pressure.
The only Yamaha pedal I've ever tried was the Flying Dragon with direct drive. I hated it, but I'm not a direct drive guy, and I think the spring was a bit too tight for me. I use an ancient DW 5002 double pedal because I can't afford the Darwin FTW.
Plus with only having one kick drum instead of two makes tuning and micing easier
I use Yamaha I like it but I haven't tried a lot of others
When it comes to double bass, Thomas Lang and Virgil Donati reign supreme! 😃 they are in a whole different league!!! The girl was good! 🙂👍
Idk about that. They are amazing, don’t get me wrong…but that’s excluded an entire metal community that could wipe the food with them in terms of double bass.
100%'agree that the new breed metal drummers feetmhand work kill Lang in some ways.
@@theelement6255 about the ONLY thing those drummers could beat Lang at is speed. And believe me those drummers (thrash, speed, extreme, nu) are great.
George Kollias himself said Lang is phenomenal drummer.
@@morbidmanmusic I disagree. I’ve had a lesson with Lang and he can do whatever he wants to do with either hands or feet. His speed isn’t in the extreme range, but he can certainly keep up with the best thrash drummers. I’ve scene him first hand do it.
@@theelement6255 in what way? Virgil has done more on double bass that most people don’t even know. Even Thomas Lang bows down to him.
Wauuuu exenteeee baterista.
Lesson actually starts at 24:20
Are you able to do double strokes with those quiet kicks?
DW 9000 Pedals Drums & Hardware variety of brands of kits & snares DW(2), Yamaha(1), Tama(1), Ludwig(2), Mapex(1), PDP(2)
I doubt I'll get an answer, but does anyone know where to get that Mozgus shirt? I can't find it.
Entry level
I have to agree with cablezilla....Mr Thomas Lang is the most impressive on many levels..imo
Billy Cobham whit Mahavishnu and solos album in the 70
Dude! Most folks today have no idea who billy is ! He was a boss ! I went to one of his clinics. That dude is Bad!
For the price, Tama Speed Cobras are my choice - only downside is that I can't blame being crap on my pedals!
The Art of Editing!
I use DW5000
Please include Mario duplantier of Gojira for a live stream
Tama Iron Cobra / left footed.
What was that song in the opening?
awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Five Magics cover!!!!
Her T-shirt!!!!!!!!!
Tama speed cobras for me.
What song is she playing starting at 0:30 ?
A show with Hellhammer please! (Jan Axel Blomberg) 🤟🏻
Narada Micheal Walden
Where's John longstreth or Tony laureno?, Romain Goulon??Proscriptor McGovern or Mike browning. Pete Sandoval or Lee Harrison? Jon Allen, Tim yeung, Derek roddy, lombardo even? Get some guns if your going to do a double bass special.
@A D yeah bro and to be fair that's only scratching the surface.. there are many more once you hit the extreme death and black scene. I thought going for a stalwart level double bass artist would of made more sense to start though.
Meh, I hear you but I don’t think they are needed for a drumeo lesson. Not to mention they already did an extensive lesson and a half with Derek roddy
Alan cassidy on drumeo pliss

Considering the subject double bass drumming, the next guest has to be Aquiles Priester. Who, for those who don't know, was Eloy Casagrande's teacher.
We Need Dave Haley of Psycroptic!
Or Nicholas Wells of First Fragment!
Or Spencer Prewett of Archspire!
Orrrr Marco Pitruzella of Wayyyyyy too many to name.
Orrrr The Great John Longstreth!!!!
Bahahahahahahahaha the clip of Lars double kick was like hearing my child play drums for the first time hahahahhahahahahahaha
I have IXB …
Iron Cobra 900 are best
27:30 you’re welcome
Please get Mario Duplantier one of these
Tama Iron Cobras; also she's good but man, Spencer Prewett, Lord Marco, or Alex Rudinger could've been great people for this too.
Name song?
DW
Heel toe heel toe😉
Aquiles priester
George kollias should be in this channel
i use the Trick Drums Pro-V1 Bigfoot double bass pedals and once you use them... i cant even bring myself to use anything else...its comparable to when you drive manual transmission exclusively, but then you gotta drive someone else's car for whatever reason and they have an automatic and you're just gagging because the drive is gonna be so unbearable compared to if there was a manual trans in the car. lol
Soooo who’s the fastest double basser? Lol pretty sure they kept mentioning they’d do it in this video
I didnt know the cookie monster could sing 👍, she likes symbolic by death, i like her already
First video from drumeo with good sound,
Not to insult, but your sound quality is usually a little off
Mike mangini best double kick player ever
DEATH IS ULTIMATE!
RIP CHUCK SCHULDINER.
LIKE \m/
Why hasn't Mike Mangini been invited?
Wouldn't tap dancers make amazing double kick drummers? Asking for a friend
They made good drummers. Remember buddy was a tap dancer🤔
ua-cam.com/video/eS_nRvZ-qBQ/v-deo.html
I have this in "Music" folder, not "Dance" ;-)
Almost all the old jazz guys were
I thought Gene Krupa played double kick before Louie Belson...interesting
Luigi invented it in 1938
It's Hoglan not Hogland.
Growly Bear screaming
Why can’t you bring on somebody fast.. like Dave McGraw, spencer from archspire, etc
Don’t need that for this lesson.
The fact that you left out Tommy Aldridge out of the video makes this whole thing void. And there were double bass players before Louie Bellson.
No mention of Dave Lombardo
or john longstreth or pete sandoval or gene hoglan or sean reinhart .. the list goes on. not saying this is lame but.... lol
@@tamadreaming even Lars got his mention 😵💫
@@cemguler183 that'd been one i could have done without hahahahaha
@tommy johnson I doubt they care 😂
No Lars Ulrich? No Dave Lombardo? No epic double bass fart rudiments from Samus66? I’m out.
Although, you do have The Atomic Clock Gene Hoglan here…so that’s good.
Lars is at 43:00
Triggers to show your fast is like cheating….
This is a sad misinformed comment
@@theelement6255 whatever bro! I’ve been drumming over 30 years. If you are using triggers to make you sound faster that’s not being musical just my opinion.
seeing people on their phones during the initial performance is straight disrespect. cmon drumeo make your people put their phones away and watch the performance. imagine playing for people looking out and seeing them surfing the internet and not even caring that you are there. shameful.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
