- The House of the Dead (ザ・ハウス・オブ・ザ・デッド) is a 1996 on-rails light gun shooter developed by Sega AM1 for Model 2 arcade board. A sloppy and likely rushed Saturn port was subsequently released late into the system's life.
Note: This is my second time doing a playthrough for this game. This time around, I'm using version 1.1a of the m2emulator and recording at 60fps, so the overall video quality should be a bit better. Gameplay in general is muched improved as well. I don't burn any credits up until I get to the Magician at the very end, and my score ended up being good enough to unlock the true ending. Hope you guys enjoy!

I was so depressed because after House of the Dead 3 all the limb damage and most of the gore got removed. House of the Dead 4 has almost no gore and Scarlet Dawn doesn't even have blood/gore.......dark times indeed

The funnest way to play this game (and House of the Dead 2) imo is to put in* a load of credits and grab both guns (player 1 and player 2) and play the game by yourself. It's such a fun and exhilarating way to play the game and gives your arms and hands quite a work out too considering how weighty the lights guns are of this game. I remember doing this on House of the Dead 2 at a local arcade when I was around 15-16 yrs old and it felt absolutely satisfying and tiring at the same time. I died at the last boss as my arms and hands were getting real tired at that point and I was on my last credit. What's funny is that after putting the light guns down, I now noticed the small group of bystanders who were watching me while I was playing lol.
I always thought it was a real bummer how they did away with the HYUCK HYUCK HYUCK death sound effect in this version.
also sucks that they changed the picture of the scientist team in the stats screen, the old black and white one looked far more sinister.

It's in the music. The music also has the actual Space Shuttle Challenger launch mission control room "Challenger, go at throttle up" quote. Yeah it's weird.

the chapter 2 soundtrack has some weird voice sounds, based on what i heard it says "i know u r dead" and thats why right next you can hear a laugh. but obviously i could be wrong xD

The real arcade machine of this is a blast to play, but there aren't any HotD 1 machines in my area anymore.:/

SegaCDboy21 ohhh I know it’s just expensive is all, unless I get the Japanese version, I still haven’t got it but I think soon I’ll get the NA version to review it I think lol
I'd like to see this remade for the current gen, not as an on-rails game but as an FPS/survival horror hybrid.
What's sad is that supposedly Sega lost the original source code for the game so a re-release is out of the question. I hope Scarlet Dawn is good.
So to get the good ending, you have to save all survivors? You were amazing with that gameplay
IIRC, saving all the survivors just opens the bonus rooms before the final boss fight. Getting the good ending is tied to your score.
I've even shot a hostage by accident, and I still got the ending with Sophie. Best score I've made so far in the game is about 74,080.
Saturn Memories Even worst when you get the bad ending ( sophie turns into zombie) because of the low score. Me sucks because i always get the normal ending (rogan just looks to the mansion).
@@m00dslayer15 in order to get the bad ending you need to have a score under 60,000 points and divisible by ten
Been a while since I've seen HOTD on an arcade setup... holy crap the Saturn port was bad in comparison!
Ruaidhri O'Baoill Tantalus Interactive was definitely capable of better. They did the really nice-looking Manx TT port after all. I imagine Sega probably pressed them to get the game done fast since the Dreamcast was right around the corner. Same thing that likely affected Burning Rangers as well.
there was a beta version called House of the Dead Taikenban for the Sega Saturn compared to the Final product, the beta looked obsolutely like the Arcade version except with Sega Saturn graphics

I'm interested to know what kind of mouse you are using for this gameplay? Your skills for this game are incredible. Wish i could get this ending. Also really wish i didn't have to reload. Could be my particular mouse i am using.
+Zombie Jesus It's a wired gaming mouse, but I turn the DPI down so low that I may as well be using an ordinary one. All it takes is practice. Keep playing until you have everything memorized and always go for headshots.

Zombie Jesus Dots per inch. It's a means to measure mouse sensitivity. A gaming mouse lets you adjust this on the fly with the press of a button.

I'm always puzzled as to why HotD 1 is never included in any of the series re-releases. HotD 2 was included with HotD3. It was also left out of the Wii port. Still waiting on HotD4 for PC or console though!
lastcrusadefan A lot of source code from that era is missing. HotD1 might be one of the affected games. That or maybe it was because Sega hadn't done much with Model 2 games until just recently.
lastcrusadefan HotD4 is one I'm going to have to skip. Don't own a PS3 unfortunately.
lastcrusadefan SEGA ( unbelievably) lost the Source Codes for HotD, so if they re released it. They would have to start over from scratch or have to recover them from a torrent site.
Tell me about it. I was honestly hoping that it would get included into the HoD 2&3 Wii re-release as a super duper secret unlockable bonus, but it wasn't. :P

Emulation is risky in terms of reliable performance, especially since there's only so few Model 2 emulators out there.

Yup, that's how light gun games are in the 90's, it's annoying and actually somewhat harmful but we have to endure it for our nostalgia's sake
I bet this is what inspired the resident evil series
It was actually inspired by a Famicom Game called "Sweet Home". This game was made because the developers wanted a more "hardcore" version of Virtua Cop in terms of gameplay.

Hello, During ending, we see "Ghost" Sophie and, sometimes we see Normal Sophie.
And sometimes, the game says "The End" without showing Sophie.
Can you tell me when does this happen?

There is another ending about Sophie becomes in zombie.
It's the bad ending and all three endings are tied to your overall score.

+里布 Yeah, that's the true ending. Rogan marries Sophie and has a daughter. G and Rogan's daughter are the main characters in HotD3.
