      Hi Robbie, thanks for your comments.
      we struggled with the grass as it was very wet and never dried. this made it unusable. we had to remove all of the clay soil and add drainage.
      There is lots of greenery in the garden now. you can see how it has come along in some of the videos below.
      thanks

    So, 8-week project. In the small space, un-doing, re-doing, re-placing.... I love the result. Though it is hard to call it "a garden", rather beautifully designed garden architecture piece... For the amount of money spent on this project one could buy a little farm somewhere in Nova Scotia. With a garden

    What a beautiful space. It looks like it would be both great for entertaining or if you need a meditative moment to yourself. I'm so sorry is that a water feature I see. I love those. And once the landscape matures just a bit more it'll fill out and really bring everything to life. Because of all the stonework you can actually create your own twist in whichever way you please. Just lovely worth the effort.

    As a landscaper I appreciate how amazing it looks. That's because I realize what you are doing from the angle and view. However, a ground view few times throughout the video would have been huge (it gives us elevation and perspective). Also, a
    narrative (closed caption) giving us a description of what the crew is doing at the time would have really cool. But I enjoyed it. Thanks for posting.

    boy howdy i could feel my soul wither slightly with every addition of hardscaping but I'm sure it's what the owners wanted. Maybe it's in a chilly location? I know looking at all that rock and concrete flatness with no tree feature all I could think is "Lord I would get heatstroke standing out there for 5 minutes in the summer" but maybe in a cooler place it's nice to have all the heatsink? ^^

    • @IndependentBlogger
      @IndependentBlogger  4 роки тому +1

      Hi. Glad you liked. The reason for the fence was so it looked finished. Before hand we had the board going across and also the neighbours could see through the gaps as their house is higher. The double skin prevents this and allows us to tack the climber to the fence.

      Hi there,
      Thanks for watching. We actually created more usable space with the garden after the work was completed. There was an additional patio area that made the most of the sun, a decked area at the end of the board walk where you can sit and watch the water feature and there was a lot more planting areas. you should be able to see from the videos below how it developed over 15 months.

      Hi KC, thanks for watching. We decided to reconfigure the garden due to the lack of sun and poor soil conditions. the patio was moved to make the most of the sun when it came into the garden. Hi Samm,
      Thanks for watching. We made the changes to the garden as the before design was quite restrictive with regards to the sun. also the lawn area never dried and we were unable to use it.
      The below videos show how the garden had progresses over a 15 month period. I have also added a link to the original garden before we started any work at all. This was done to give the designer an indication of the pattern of the sun. You may like that one too.

      Hi Mark,
      Glad you liked the video and thank you for your comment.
      It was a difficult decision with regards to the board walk. We had to devise a way of getting across the stream without too much difficulty. We tried to blend the boardwalk in so it would be visible and at the same time have a purpose.

  • @MrNidhog

    i like it. You did a lot with what you had. However i think people may be criticizing because the perspective the camera is at does not show how bad of a grade your lawn was on. If you stop at 3:30 in you can see how much dirt had to be moved and the water element was a nice touch. Obviously not a home where there might be young children but somewhere for adult(s) can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing space. A POV walk through before and after would have been nice.

    When i seen them start building the little bridge i assumed that it was going to take you over the stream to a little Gazebo type sitting area. Which in my honest opinion would be better than what they actually did it would add more room for people to sit out back.

    • @IndependentBlogger
      @IndependentBlogger  3 роки тому

      Hi Joshua,
      Thanks for watching the video. We added the boardwalk for a number of reasons really. We wanted to get across the stream without potentially falling in. This allows us to maintain the garden on the other side. The curve of the boardwalk was to add softness away from the edges of the stone. finally we wanted to have a path that lead to the seating area at the side of the pond and back of the stone building. we wanted a reason for people to walk there and enjoy the rest of the garden.

    This is definitely a Maximalist design; it’s like the owner couldn’t decide what on what to do with their back garden so they went with all the ideas. Would have looked ten times better with out that odd decking. I did like the paving and the raised flower beds, they should have done a smaller water feature hidden in the back with a path.

      Hi There,
      The wall at the bottom of the garden was built around the grounds of the original house. we wanted to keep that visible as it's a traditional dry stone wall. We did however have to have it rebuilt as it had started to decay in places. Due to planning permission we could not increase the height of the wall so we had to leave it as it was.

    Quick question, @Ian Fiddler! Did you use a stain on the concrete pavers there? That made the patio come alive much better than I thought it could! It's very attractive.
    I enjoy watching others do hard work (because that means I get a break from my own neverending farm chores, and that looming project of a whole acre converted from pasture to a crop producing garden), but as an avid smallholder/gardener and aspiring market gardener, I feel like too much space was dedicated to hardscaping. I could feed my family something out of that space every day of the year, if I had it in a crop rotation, with space to spare for a sitting area.
    I understand you're working off of a client's brief based on their wishes, and the average man or woman doesn't have time for gardening anymore, but I'm just itching to tear open that patio in front of the shed and putting in a neat row of raised beds, and adding an espaliered peach and a small lean-to greenhouse for seed starting against that shed wall. It was getting a decent amount of sun every day the sun was shining!

    • @IndependentBlogger
      @IndependentBlogger  5 років тому +1

      Hi there,
      thank you for your comments, they are much appreciated. there was no stain on the pavers. they are natural stone. they look great when the sun shines on them and all the colours come out.
      We have introduced some raised beds into the garden as this allows us to plant herbs. as you can see the garden does not get much sun, apart from the paved areas, where we wanted a seating area. The remainder of the garden is poor for drainage so we are limited to what we can grow. We did try to grow vegetables in the past but they grow very leggy as they try to reach for the sun.
      the plants we have introduced are suitable for a woodland environment and seem to have taken very well. Watch for the next video where I will show the garden 4 months on.
