It’s ironic for him being the character who basically started the story he was so reactionary and passive especially in contrast to his destructive titan
It’s the same with Armin, he’s easily the most gentle of the main trio but had the most destructive Titan. Then again maybe that’s who you want in control of a reusable nuke.
I remember when I first watched AOT about 4 years ago, and from his first appearance I had a weird soft spot for Bertholdt that I can't really explain. Even if he was basically just a background character, by design, at the time, I just liked seeing him on screen. So you can imagine how I felt when he ended up being the _Colossal Titan_ and he actually had story relevance I always love seeing people pay attention to Bertholdt and I hope he gets more appropriation in the future, nice video
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the vid. I always felt the same, nobody noticed him but I always did and I appreciated him just for existing, and I've only grown to love him more offer time.
Although I don’t agree that Bertholdt is more of an interesting character then Reiner, I do think he is underrated especially with his impact on the series. Good video!
We didn’t even get Berthold’s backstory nor Armin seeing Berthold’s memories to begin with, we know Reiner is half Marlian and half Eldian but his father is Marlian and his Mother is Eldian, Annie is the same but his mother is Marlian and his father is Eldian but her adoptive father took care of her and he is Eldian too, but we don’t know about Berthold
@@Omega-jg4oqif anything, to me (personally), that makes him more interesting, the mystery is interesting (this isn’t an arguement - I love Reiner as a character as well)
@@CharlieTheMad256 I like your idea but I don’t call that a mystery more like under-utilised, if you want a mystery character then it’s Eren Kruger for example
Imo Bert lost more than any other character in AOT. He joined the Warriors Unit to give his father better health care and shortened his life to 13 more years. Was it even worth it - the sacrifice of a 12 year old boy for a terminally ill adult? In the end the father was so sick, he died anyway. He lost his own life out of fear for failing Marley, finally living even less than the 13 years he was left with. He was a good, timid and shy person, who created close relationships on both sides, and was greatly conflicted about his mission, but still feared not to disappoint his beloved ones, so he moved forward with his terrifying goal. In the end Armin took everything from him: his girlfriend, his Titan, even his life. He really deserved better!
I wish we got more of Bertholdt in the previous seasons, like his character is fully aware of what his mission is during all of this unlike Reiner. The tenacity the guy has is insane and to see it culminate in Season 3 was really defining for him.
Ironically the show with no filler episodes dedicated to fleshing out characters relationships needed some extra episodes to flesh them out I really wish we got to see more of the warriors interacting with the scouts, especially with Bertholdt independent from Reiner
@@Omega-jg4oq😂 In fact, the text is very correct about "I took everything from you: life, titan and precious memories." It is the memories and nothing more, because Annie romantically has nothing to do with Berthold P.S. I know that your comment is a joke))
Many people don't understand how much Bertholdt's character was because of the lack of screen time. Isayama gave Bertholdt a bit more scenes in the manga, but I'm upset they didn't have time to put it in the actual anime.
You've no idea how much I appreciate this video. I love Bertholdt. It's a pity he is underrated and forgotten by others. I love aot, so much that I got a reiner and bertholdt tattoo. You did an amazing work analyzing his character!!!! Not many people acknowledge him besides the fact that armin gained his power.
You have no idea how much I appreciate this comment. I've always had a soft spot for Bert, I'm glad this video got so much attention, it's my second most viewed behind my Levi one. If you enjoyed this video, I hope you stick around and check out some of my others, and once again thank you for the comment it made my day.
Sometimes I wish he had survived longer, Bertholdt is a cool character but it's still so easy to forget him almost like the Colossal Titan is more iconic than Bert himself. I can't agree that hes more interesting than Reiner too when we got so much from him after the time skip. We needed more backstory about him as a recruit.
I really like Bertholdt, its really amazing how they do season 2.. you don't see much of him, and then when the act happens in the tower you REALLY come to like to guy.. Then when Mikasa slashes his throat you can see that the guy is actually hurt by that action (Emotionally). While I think he's always been the softest out of the Marley Crew, he's a character I feel that could of been persuaded into going against Marley.. Even in Season 2 its the classic "we didnt even get to talk this through" (Or however it goes lol), Mikasa just decides to jump both of them to kill them.. Their response was decided there and then.
Amazing video i loved your theory on why Bert is in love with Annie Next video should be a retrospective on the most complex deep character: connies mom
I love Berthold so much! (actually, i love all Marli`s trio since 2season) Thank you for this video, he deserve sooo much more love((( As an introvert myself, i inderstand hov much feelings he hide inside and it hurts so badly😭 The drama of the Marleyan warriors is really difficult. Their country needs them only as weapons, but here, on Paradise, where they are accepted and loved as comrades, they cannot spend a day without a terrible feeling of guilt. Berthold chose to close himself from his feelings, Reiner chose to adapt and lost his mind. But just think what it was like for Bertholdt, when the only friend "on his side" was slowly going crazy next to him, he couldn't do anything, and just had to hold on, keep holding on. Keep doing horrible things. Being so stressed every time we see him. But so stoic in same time! And in the end, there was no one, who could save Berthold, who could help him.. He wasn't even given a redemption arc. HE DESERVE IT Such an amasing anime, really
Bertholdt being afraid of being eaten aint making you a coward haha. And he prob forgot the battle since he smiled at them. But then realized the situation and called for annie and reiner
What a great video man. Would really love if you'd cover Ymir (Not the founder) in a video like this, its tragic we only got one season of her actually being relevant to the story and she is one of the greater characters in this story that often gets overlooked due to her short screentime.
I've actually already made a video about Ymir but it's really low quality with bad audio, no background music, no editing just still images. It's one of my worst videos. Someday I might remake it because I do love Freckles a lot as a character and think she needs more love. You can watch my other video and ignore the trash production and wait for my potential remake of it.
He was a great character too. I felt he was a lot mentally stronger compared to the other characters sent to Paradise island. He understood that there were no devils on the island like they were told and eveyebody had to play out their roles because this situation was already a mess from beginning. In the end when he was about to get eaten by armin in his mindless titan form, he first reacted in a frightened way asking his comrades to help him but then looked at the scouts and realized it was pointless and also accepted the fact that his memories will pass down to armin for good
Great video dude, even if I like Reiner more I still always appreciated Bertholdts character. His words about this cruel world were also indication to me that the ending should’ve been a full rumbling and not some „come to understand each other“ shit. But still nice video 👆
Bertholdt is definitely an interesting character. While I do prefer Reiner, I think a lot of people are more biased towards Reiner and Annie as we know more about them. We really dont know much about Bertholdt, and it mirrors what introverted/reserved people are like in real life.
Literally let him cook. That's all I have to say. The video IS the comment. Now where's the Bertholdt backstory + raiding other nations with warriors OVA at?
I'm doing Annie and Zeke later this month but plenty of people have already talked about Reiner. The rest of the Shifters ill talk about in my upcoming character Tierlist video.
You could go through the history books of that world and not find anybody nearly as despicable as Bertholdt and Reiner. All other opinions are invalid. He slaughtered innocent people that never did him any harm when he was in the ultimate position to change the status quo. He failed because he's just as cruel as the world he lived in. If he never did what he did, Eren wouldn't have had to do what he did. It was squarely Bertholdt's fault because he had the power and didn't do anything
It’s ironic for him being the character who basically started the story he was so reactionary and passive especially in contrast to his destructive titan

He still attempted genocide and honesty his death was cathartic to watch. I'm still annoyed about Reiner getting off

Yeah if One Piece can have 1000s of episodes lol we could have gotten an extra 10 or so for AOT.
A moment of silence how Armin took Bertolts life. Literally killiing him for his powers and his crush Annie
Man Bert deserved better
I was legit waiting for Armin to mention that he took his girl Annie when he was talking to him in the paths 😂😂🤣

Yeah , it's clear in the manga that he was doing whatever he was doing for the treatment of his father 😢
