Hi Mark. Appreciate the review. Personally, however, I would prefer if you showed them on the ceiling at the actual distance people would be using it. Hard to gauge on the wall where the stars are too closely spaced.

Yeah i ended up buying the flux even though i thought it looked way too much white and unrealistic based on all the youtube comparisons, but im happy it's awesome. You really have to see it on ceiling at normal distance to understand the product. Thanks for the helpful review though!

Recently purchased the Sega Homestar Original as a tool for relaxation and potential sleep aid while listening to whatever I can find here in UA-cam. The projection on the ceiling is very clear and detailed, especially thanks to the focus-adjustment ring on the top so you can tinker with the image until even the smallest details are visible. This thing is QUIET, very little noise, none if you are wearing headphones. In a very dark room, it will create a faint glow around everything, but not enough to keep you awake (Also less chance of bumping into something when you need to get up). Definitely use the 60 minute timer function because, more often than not, I tend to nod off to sleep before getting that far and its comforting to know it won't be running longer than it needs to. I don't know how it compares to the "Flux" but I believe $160 was a better value for what I was getting as opposed to about $250, especially on a product I'd never tried before. Very happy with the Original, and I don't really want anything brighter so probably won't invest in the Flux.

For all those who say "The original is more realistic", I recommend seeing the sky in a place far from a city, with very clean air and no full moon. You will be surprised... What if we compare the two versions by doing the projections on a dome?

I mean yeah if you used different infrareds with a scope you would see there’s hella fucking stars besides the one to the naked eye but who cares the point is WE SEE WITH THESE EYES not telescope eyes .so the realistic choice here would be the original not the flux .

I'm sorry but the fact that there is more stars crowding the view doesn't mean it's better. The original looks more realistic as would be visible to the naked eye. The flux makes it look like a grid of stars crowding the circle, much harder to imagine they are actually stars. Not to mention, you don't watch stars in a lit room, so comparing them in a lit space is absurd.

It's possible the Flux is using 'data' / images from a clearer, less light polluted sky than you are usually used to. I'm from NZ and we have a lot of remote areas (away from people & their lights) where the night sky is full of stars.

For that price, as a home user, i'd just buy a digital projector for use with a still image from JPL's website or with a public domain video of the night sky. A digital projector would have multiple uses and you wouldn't have to pay 25 dollars for new discs.
The Sega Homestar would be good in a teaching environment though.

Very very useful. Great presentation. Thank you. Will buy the flux. Maybe the heating up of original unit is due to the electric plug vs. the USB cable that perhaps prevents heating up the electric box connected to wall which then connects to unit. I never thought about that before but that seems to be a technological built in wiring of all USB connecting devices, the phones and lamps and fans that you can connect with USB these days don't get warmed. Perhaps that's a great advantage to USB designed devices and appliances. Lol.. oooh maybe I'm smarter than I thought on this Sunday morning after holidays. I'm not a techy girl. At all. But a musician who is always plugging things in. I'm so not technical that I bought the planetarium discs online and then when they arrived I realized I had no way to play these discs and directions said it's for use on Sega homestar. Flux, etc. So now I need to get that ... but need the stars on my ceiling, so must expand my "stuff" collection. Excited to get the flux now and keep it permanently set in a great corner of our home for starry nights. Nice box for a shelf too, the flux.

Everybody wants to keep it 'realistic'! I live in a big city with loads of smoke and light pollution so the most "realistic" experience for me is refraining from purchasing a planetarium, switching off all the lights and gazing up at my dark, featureless ceiling.

I live in a rural area in Tasmania, in the southern hemisphere and the sky is black and it is very dark. The Flux looks more realistic to me, however, it also looks strange (in the video) because it was projecting the northern hemisphere. The stars here are very bright and clear, the planets easy to see, and the Milky Way sometimes is so intense and crystal clear, and seems so close, that it feels like you can almost touch it. You can see all the colours. It's breath-taking!! All with just the naked-eye. In the city, the night sky looks washed out. I just bought the Flux for my 4 year old grandson. He is mad about the sky, moon and starts etc. I can't wait to see his reaction :) With his keen interest, I thought it best if he's looking at a realistic night-sky, and he will be able to maybe match the Flux sky with the real sky oneday.

Home planetarium technology has really lagged behind in my opinion . Neither of these look that great and if I had to choose one, it looks like the original has a more realistic spacing of stars and clusters etc. The new Flux projection just looks way to packed with stars and looks like it would benefit from being as far back from the surface to be projected on as possible. It just doesn't look inviting from this video at all.
I'm really surprised we don't have an affordable laser solution these days for projections or at least something that mimics 3D spatial projection. Maybe that 10 years off still, otherwise I would love to relax looking into a realistic projection of the heavens.

Now I'm in contradiction. I like the realistic look on the original but i don't quite like the blurriness and that shutting star looks weird. On the other hand, i like the clarity of the flux. But again, there are to manny stars.. And I'm not sure were to get the discs from. Any recommendations, Mark Draper?
Also, thank you for the review!

Thanks for the video man. I was looking for one on the internet, the flux seem much clearer, but the density of the the stars feels too much. The density in the original seems more realistic. Noticed in the video there is to much noise in the colors of the original, is it from the camera? The original costs around 100$ which is quite comfortable price for the pocket. And the flux costs around 300$, a little bit expensive. I wanna buy one of these, but I don't want to spend money on the original and not being satisfied. Should I buy the original? Or should I save a little bit more money for the flux? Is there any other planetarium projectors?

A subjective question but do you (or anyone reading this) think the Flux is too bright for a kids room while they sleep? I figure not as this is probably the number one use case, but it does look super bright! I'll check out your ds1 review too. Pretty expensive but in for a penny... :D

You have the option of using the constellation disc, which shows constellation lines on the star maps. I'm sure this would be helpful in learning, but of course what you see in the night sky would look different due to local light pollution.
