Which FRFR Speaker System Did I End Up Buying? Guitar Daily Ep 146

  • In this video I discuss which FRFR speaker I ended up buying. The previous Fender FR10 & FR12 were loaned to me from Musicworks and both sold quickly so I had to return them. The issue for me is that I already own a Headrush FRFR-108 so that complicated the decision - but I’m happy with what I purchased.
    Sorry about the glitchy parts of the video near the end. Not sure what happened there - first time

    Thank you. Do you like Headrush as a clean Jazz amp (darker clean jazz sound)? I need something cheap and portable. Does it sound good in quieter settings ... like guitar duo for very intimate venues?

    • @NickGranville
      @NickGranville  3 години тому

      @@vasilijdobrica5968 thanks, yes it works for that. You might have to be careful about the bass frequencies, as even though the headrush is an 8 inch speaker it’s still very big sounding and on a neck pickup could get boomy in some rooms - Nothing that eq can’t fix. The Headrush is great for the price

    Hey Nick, great video. Thanks mate. I'm looking at a kemper player profile and the kemper power kabinet. As a guy who's yet to venture out of his bedroom, the fractal gear is just (well, quite a bit) beyond my budget. Have you tried the kemper setup I'm think about? Or in your travels as a working guitarist, have you come across anyone using this stuff? I'm always weary of the big channel YT reviews (positive or negative) because they often seem to be working an angle, or getting some kind of kickback. Appreciate any thoughts. Enjoying your content and channel. 🙌

      @@bobfig thanks! I haven’t tried the kemper player profile or the kemper power kabinet. I have tried the older Kemper box thing in a studio, and wasn’t overly impressed with it. But that was only the presets, as I could imagine if I made my own preset or profile I might feel differently. When I was in the Uk many many guitar players were using Kemper stuff and all got great tones and were doing big gigs. For me the fractal stuff is the gold standard so I figured if I’m going to go amp-less I might as well go all in. Hope this helps? Thanks for watching!

    the spark cab is an frfr speaker ... it is not only designed to be used for the spark amps. they have two xlr in's for modelers, etc. that one is possibly a good choice (haven't tried mine yet, still boxed) but i generally use the headrush 108's and put them on stands, for stereo.

    • @NickGranville
      @NickGranville  4 місяці тому

      I haven’t tried the spark cab. Not sure if they’re available in NZ. I think the Headrush 108’s & 12’s seem to be designed to be used on stands - which doesn’t work for me but if it’s good for you then cool - go for it, they’re much cheaper and do sound good 👍

    I wonder if a carpenter could make you a low stand to fit the headrush and give it enough ground clearance - but it would be one more thing to carry, which would be a pain. PS - Loved your tones today.

    • @NickGranville
      @NickGranville  4 місяці тому

      Thanks! Yeah, I did think about something like that but to have to carry one more thing is a hassle and usually I have lots to carry already. I’ll hang onto the Headrush as I’m sure it’ll come in handy sometime, but the fender will be my daily driver

      @@NickGranville Is it possible to screw in some big rubber feet?

    • @NickGranville
      @NickGranville  4 місяці тому +1

      Possibly, but that might cause rattles or something. I think it’s best just to leave it as is, and I’ll use the fender Fr10 mostly and have the Headrush as a backup

    i've heard good things about these, definitely curious about trying one at some point, as we always run IEMs this wouldn't really be needed, but i wonder on much smaller gigs and depending on PA placement, if this is something cool to have , or a power amp + cab a better solution for 'sound reinforcement' if that makes sense
    i haven't yet really got any definite answer on that , so can only theorycraft for now 😄

    • @NickGranville
      @NickGranville  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, I used IEM’s sometimes too but I still bring this as sometimes there are others on the band without iem’s so they wouldn’t hear me without it, and also if the sound people screw up the iem’s then I can pull them and just use my speaker. But mostly it gets used for rehearsals, smaller gigs and at home or on the occasional other gig

      @@NickGranville Another interesting video Nick. Have you tried running your IEM's direct from the headphone output of your FM9/FM3 & have a monitor mix come in to output 2 or 3 of the fractal? That way you can submix the monitor feed in and if the engineer screws up you can just run the headphone out; so still hearing your stereo guitar mix. Just don't have guitar coming back through the monitor mix otherwise it will sound crap & have latency.

    • @NickGranville
      @NickGranville  4 місяці тому

      Thanks Jason. Yes, I’ve tried that and it works well. Big only works if you’re hardwired. If you’re wireless it won’t work. Also it’s often more hassle to do that than it’s worth - my setups have to happen quickly on most of my gigs. That’s why bringing an FRFR and having my own control is the best way for me to do it - most of the time

    • @jasonalexander5253
      @jasonalexander5253 4 місяці тому +1

      @@NickGranville I use wireless IEM s all the time. I’m not following why it needs to be hardwired. 🤔

    • @NickGranville
      @NickGranville  4 місяці тому

      Sorry I re read what you said. I was thinking about how It usually works when I’m wireless - the sound is coming from the monitor engineer. I get what you’re saying now, get them to give me a feed into my fractal and mix it in there. That’s a possibility
