    I think calling Quinton's videos video essays is incorrect. It's not an essay it's more of a rant. I don't open them to get a concise and well scripted coherent thesis, I click on it to be reminded of a childhood show that I had forgotten about while getting passionate side notes from the creator. It's kind of like listening to a friend talk about something they're passionate about.

    I like to think of Quinton's videos as the equivalent of a Let's Play of the show. They're not "video essays" as such, because he doesn't go into them with a full understanding of everything that happens -- instead, he summarizes boring "gameplay" in the same way a Let's Player would summarize hours of grinding in a JRPG. We the viewer are presented with his thoughts in sort-of realtime. It's much closer in format to Chuggaconroy (scripted Let's Play/pseudo reaction content) than to someone like Jose (video essay analyzing a TV show).

    i love long tv show recap/analysis videos! i treat them more like audiobooks (which are often of a similarly long length) to listen to while commuting or doing chores, than a sub 1-hour video i'd actually sit down and watch. they aren't complete background noise, but they help my silly little adhd brain focus on whatever real-life task i have at hand. the detail given to describing the actual events of the show (as opposed to just doing an analysis of theme or character) means that i can basically 'watch' an entire show that i know i'd never really want to watch in less than a day.

I would also listen to his videos while going to sleep, but is rewind when I woke up to catch what I missed.
      I also know Quinton works really hard on his videos and his mental health has suffered for it, so I hope if he finds this video that he knows that many of his core fans find his videos to be much more than rain sounds. I think of him as a bit of an archivist.

    I think people like content they can consume as they do other things. Longer videos mean less time finding the next one. You can just put on your headphones, and your hands are free to continue doing whatever else needs to be done.
    This is the same reason creators make yearly or monthly compilations of their content all in one long video, or why some youtubers upload their videos on other services as podcasts. It's why there are so many (bad, unnecessary) podcasts in the first place. It's why so many people listen to twitch streamers in the background. People have been trained to multitask by having their time and attention perpetually directed to ever-increasing demands, such as work, family, commute, managing health, politics, daily errands and chores, etc. In order to fit in any form of leisure time or psychologically recuperate from stress, it has to fit into the already crammed lives we all lead. Long form, primarily audio-based content is perfect for that.

      Wow. I feel called out. I was recently commenting on LinkedIn that I really don't get to read for leisure the way I used to. Cause I'm an academic and I get paid to read (non leisure stuff lol). But my consumption of audio books and podcasts like The Magnus Archives has increased exponentially. And it is because I can work/write/mark papers while they play all day. I'm engaged with them but that's the only way I can consume a lot of fiction now, by adding it on top of my work. Wow. I'm depressed now.

    Also while I disagree with "watching video essays to sleep" if replaced with "watching it in the background" the point doesn't really change. It feels like a huge misstep to attribute it to wanting to sleep to, because people are just going to think you're dissing the video when at the end its put next to things people actually do (like listening to it in the background passively).
    edit: typo lol

    • @RobertTolppi
      @RobertTolppi  Рік тому +51

      I agree! I focused on the sleeping part too much in the beginning and expanded upon/clarified that point too late in the video. People absolutely do use that video as a sleep aid, though. It’s in a few “video essays to fall asleep to” playlists on UA-cam, however “passive background listening” is a much more accurate and broader term that better captures the ways Quinton’s audience enjoys his content.

    Oh my ADHD autistic LOVES the 8 hour summaries and dissections Quinton does. He comes off as genuine, in a way, due to it. When I watch those videos, I can feel how much work he's overall put into the vids.
    I enjoy the summaries cause for some of us, we might have not watched the show in ages, never finished it, or never seen it at all. It helps me feel caught up so that I understand what he's talking about in the other half.
    In addition, I love just being able to put on an interesting video whilst I play a game or do chores or whatever. I don't have to get distracted every so often by trying to find what vid to watch next. I like it a lot.
    Something about the way he talks, presents things, goes through the scenes/episodes/games/etc just tickles my ND brain somehow.
    It's like... Oh! I know what it's like! It's like an autistic/adhd friend coming up and just infodumping the hell out of their special interests/hyperfixations to you.
    And for me, I mean that in a good way. When people excitedly infodump to me, I find their excitement spreading to me, contagious. So something about the way he does things feels like that, if that makes sense. (Not saying he has autism or adhd, just that he comes off to me as someone really dedicated to his projects and passionate about them, and so his passion kinda spreads to me as I watch/listen.)
    All in all whilst yeah he can meander, stuff like the summaries can be fun imo

      video essays aren’t that great when you can tell the creator doesn’t really care about the topic or just has really surface level takes on it, but when they’re really passionate about the subject I’m always happy to listen to the whole thing. I don’t think AI could ever replace it for me, I may listen to them in the background while doing other stuff but I’m not doing it totally braindead, I want to hear people passionately overanalyze/infodump about things they care about and have a lot to say about, if the video doesn’t actually have anything to say I’m not gonna listen.

    • @hind__
      @hind__ Рік тому +18

      Whenever a video essay meanders a few too many times and/or gets repetitive it loses me. It's sad because YT is starting to value longer videos but a lot of 1 hour video essays could easily be made with the same jokes and human element AND the information in 20-30 minutes. Writing engaging video essays are def more of a skill than people realize, especially when most (and lol guilty as charged) people just put it on the background while they do stuff.
      Like, I'm not talking about the 8 hour recap types, I mean even the 1-2 hour ones are just way too padded out sometimes and need a peer to edit and calm the script down a little because once you start noticing the dead air and repetitiveness of some (I wanna mention a specific creator so bad but it'll probably get me dogpiled LOL) video essays, it's REALLY hard not to notice it anymore.

    Podcasts are often unscripted and consists of two or more people rambling about one or many topics.
    Tv-series usually demand some sort of attention through watching, on top of the fact some really drag on.
    With a lengthy video essay, especially the "TV show recap" Mike's Mike format, you get to listen to the highlights of an entire tv show instead of actively watching it. There are certainly long form videos out there that deserve the run time. long form content in an of itself is an artform and of course deserves to exist. Personally I really enjoy longer videos to have on in the background and absorb over a week. Probably different than a lot of the audience here but video game people, those interested in Bethesda games have a plethora of long video essays to choose from, some being up to 9 hours long and a good deal of those are worth the watch, inviting plenty of discussion with alot of focused effort behind them (I'd recommend patriciantv). I think it always depends on the the subject matter, is deep enough to warrant discussion, are there points to be made, is there an overlap between what a particular video has to say and another on the same topic.Particularly Id harp on the point that the creator knows you wont consume all the video in one sitting. Its those that tailor the experience with this in mind whilst also not wanting to split up their video portfolio that truly shine.

    What upset me recently was a video essay from Turkey Tom, who I at least kinda enjoyed up to that point. He decided to make a video about Chris-chan.
    1. For the love of God can we leave her alone already? Making more videos about her A. only serves to pry further into her personal life and B. it brings her back into the internet's attention and could result in further harassment and abuse to her.
    She's never gonna be able to get proper help for her mental issues if she's being constantly harassed again. Leave her alone, let her hopefully get treatment, and cross your fingers that she's able to get treated and come to her senses and actually feel guilty for what she's done.
    2. From the very start of it, he misgendered her. I don't know what's so hard about using someone's correct pronouns! I don't even care if someone thinks she's a girl or not; no matter what gender she is, if she says "call me she/her" we should fuckin do that. We don't misgender cis criminals, so don't do it to her.
    * sigh * had to unfollow him for that one. His audience was trying to tell me it didn't matter, but it does! It matters how we treat people, even criminals! Pronouns aren't just a *priveledge* that can be yanked away whenever someone does shitty stuff. It's basic humanity that should be shown to even despicable people.
    3. I'm just really creeped out because why was the video necessary? Who needed a new invasive transphobic Chris-chan video in 2023??? No one was asking for this
    -----
    Oh God and i avoid anything even mentioning Nikocado Avocado. Everything I've learned about that man, I've learned against my will.

    3:55 feels like a lot of todays viewers grew up on free content and paying for individual creator content (compared to a platform) is not a practice people are used to.
    Compare that to the 90s/early 2000s where imo indie zines, blogs, music, movies had a decent market. Sure it was still niche and people weren’t making millions, but like you say, it allowed creators to do what they did for a living.
    I can’t quite pin down what I’m trying to say, or what the solution is, but it’s like a cultural practice? died out. Not people pay for the platforms like UA-cam Premium. Support creators directly if you enjoy their work!

    It’s literally just a fun summary and overview of a Nickelodeon show that a lot of people watched and felt nostalgic for. Why are you acting like it should be held to the same standards as an academic paper 💀💀
    We know the theories are just theories and take them with a grain of salt. It’s just a fun experience to take part in. Similar to MatPat’s videos I guess, we know “it’s just a theory”, but it’s still fun to speculate. It’s a fictional show, obviously I draw the line when they speculate about the actor’s/actress’s real life’s, but this is not that.

      @carol If the majority of your video essay is recounting episodes, it's not a very good or thought-provoking essay, it's just a retelling events. If most of your video essay is filler/fluff to pad out the runtime then maybe you should rewrite/edit it. I never denied there wasn't an audience for it, I've watched all of his video essays, but they're more akin to ambient noise than anything of substance.

    • @Carolina57685
      @Carolina57685 Рік тому +5

      @Dr Ghost Duck You know what's funny? His channel is called Quinton Reviews. He calls these videos a deep dive and a review. Does he ever claim that these are video essays? That they're supposed to be thought-provoking?
      Or does he treat them like what they are? A deep dive into a show he watched, where he reviews the episodes and relationships?
      I have no idea why you think these videos have to be thought-provoking. And just like i said, you might not like it, but others do. No need to watch them. He makes videos on shows he watched, and he talks about them in detail. He isn't trying to change the landscape of philosophical thought. He reviews shows. So he reviewed Victorious, and he talked about it for a long period of time.
      Fan theories on the damn Secret Fourth Sherlock Season tried to come off as more intellectual than this. He is reviewing a show and having fun.

      @carol But they're not even a deep-dive, its a surface level recount of everything that has happened in the show. I don't know why you're getting upset about this whole thing. Also you mention his name as if that adds anything, his videos are barely reviews. As I said I've watched his reviews and enjoy them for what they are (mindless background noise for me to listen too whilst I'm busy). I also never said they should be though provoking or suggest they were marketed that way, merely that they weren't thought provoking. They're just a bloated mess of a recount of a TV series which can still be useful or entertaining depending on who watches it.

    I don't know about sleep-watchers being totally indiscriminate. My go-tos for falling asleep are Jenny Nicholson, Folding Ideas and Shaun, because I love their videos and their voices, they don't really ever shout (unlike Hbomb might, or Quinton), and I've watched all their videos before, so my brain doesn't feel the need to try to keep up.
    Sometimes I do choose new stuff - new podcast episodes or long videos I want to watch, but if it's too dull I get annoyed, if it's too interesting I might not fall asleep, and if their voice isn't soothing or their personality annoying it will be entirely counter-productive.
    Quinton's videos might be especially suited to this kind of sleep watching, since it is lengthy and a bit silly and full of cul-de-sacs, but it's not as different from what Jenny does as you imply IMO - their channels are both very personality and vibe driven over content driven, creating this warm, cozy space.

    I feel like Quinton's mid-point theory segments like the Trina one aren't necessarily meant to include this thorough in-depth analysis that you're wanting. It's meant to be more of a funny joke. Some parts may have validity to them but for the most part - it's just supposed to be fun. The run time is more of him wanting to best himself and see how long he can make a video. As someone who's been watching his videos for a very long time I feel like this take isn't super reasonable trying to equate it with rain sound videos. I'm obviously 100% biased in this lol but still, I feel like you could've done some more research and maybe ask Quinton his reasoning behind the videos and their length, since you want more thorough content and all.

    my own speculation but it feels like there's been a major surge in "virtual friend" type content since the start of the pandemic. I wouldn't call Quinton's videos "essays" so much as they are rants and conversations you'd find in fandom, not media analysis. You see the same thing with the popularity of these multi-hour podcasts where some friends just sit and have an unscripted discussion. You're not tuning in to learn anything or be enlightened, they're not even particularly entertaining, you're just hanging out with buddies while doing your chores, driving to work, scrolling on your phone, etc
    I haven't seen any polls or surveys but I have a feeling that this genre of video is popular with mostly 20-somethings who've found themselves isolated from family and friends these past few years. Making friends and meeting people is already difficult as a young adult and then covid happened and made it 1000x worse, you've gotta get your social needs met somehow...

    Hi everyone! Before I go to bed, I definitely need to clarify a few things before people get the wrong idea. The script was reworked about a million times and, as a consequence, it came out disjointed in a way that understandably made it appear quite condescending to some people and I apologize for rushing to put this out (I've set an informal Tuesday deadline for my videos). Firstly, I understand Quinton's videos are not solely for people to sleep to. A better way of putting it is that a large segment of his audience "passively listens" to his content, as one commenter put it. He has stated that they often listen to them while driving, doing chores, and, of course, while they're going to bed. Because Quinton caters to an audience predominantly consisting of people who passively listen in, his videos often do not "fit the mold of a witty video essay," as I stated, and that's not a shortcoming of his videos that makes them "bad", it's a feature of his videos that allows them to fulfill the insatiable demand for nostalgic content that people can get lost in with little effort. Quinton produces this kind of content with unparalleled skill, and is able to hold the attention of his audience even when going off script. Many have dismissed lengthy video essays as "being too much," and I understand where this crowd is coming from. It's really hard for me to sit through an 8 hour video, but when I encounter a lengthy video I don't care for, I try my best to understand what qualities about it that I'm not seeing at first glance potentially give it merit (unless it's a 4 hour long video about Nikocado Avocado, then I simply dismiss it immediately lol). To reference an apocryphal Einstein quote, making fun of a "video essay" that's really more of a clever walk down memory lane for being a poor work of hard hitting criticism is like making fun of a fish because it fares poorly at climbing trees.

      There's no difference between how I listen to his content and yours. I never watched Victorious, but my little sister did and it was interesting to see how the show was made for her age-group in mind by mostly adult men with zero real understanding of her.
      Plus, Cat as a character was very interesting to me, just because she seemed neurodivergent, like on the nose neurodivergent, and as a joke struggles with a drug addiction. It could have almost been an intentional commentary, but it wasn't at all. It reminds me of my friend got an official VANS t-shirt and because of the font, instead of VANS, it says ANUS. That's how I feel about Cat as a character. People designed that t-shirt, pitched it, produced it, so many people looked at it, and nobody noticed and the people who may have noticed never said. Fascinating. Just because something is eight hours, doesn't mean that people aren't listening or engaging with the content in a critical way.
      There's plenty of video essayists that I won't watch because their content is vapid or meant to solely be elevator music in the background. Quinton isn't one of them and neither are you. If you were going to have a focus in this video, having a focus on that Nikacado video or something else equally mush, would have been a better idea. There's plenty of youtube essayists that just post long-ass videos detailing some persons Kiwifarms thread with limited changes. The Victorious one was a Patreon stretch goal he didn't think he'd reach and was clearly done with love for the source material. Plus, with the Trina stuff, it's perfectly fine to take what's canon about her character (desperate need to be special, open bullying/dismissal from her parents) and put that together coherently. I wasn't confused when I watched the video that Quinton was saying that was canon. It is absolutely a headcanon but technically, so is Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory being autistic or Ursula/Scar/Rattigan being queer.
      In the end, I know you're getting backlash for this video. But don't take my comment as backlash. You're a unique voice in the space and Colosseum is a bop.
