Great job. Josh should get more recognition in the guitar world.

In 1967 Paul Newman along with a stela cast made the film "Cool Hand Luke" about a prison chain gang
while in jail he was informed of the death of his Mother he withdrew to his bed and sang Plastic Jesus,
I can recommend this film it was a massive hit at the time.

The radio personality Don Imus used a version of this on his program for years with his parodies of the “Reverend Billy Sol Hargus”, a southern preacher who begged listeners to send him cash, in exchange for salvation.
Another couplet: I can drive a hundred miles an hour, as long as I got the almighty power, riding up there with my pair of fuzzy dice.

I always thought Ernie Marrs wrote this song but learned upon Googling it just now that this is incorrect. I met Ernie once in the '60s at a meeting of the Atlanta Folk Music Society. Paul Newman did a version of this song in "Cool Hand Luke."

👍Great movie. “What we’ve got here, is a failure, to communicate.”
I heard Paul worked hard, obstinately so, to get the song down.

As a Christian, I think a plastic Jesus on the dashboard is great, just another reminder it’s by the grace of God we are alive to even drive the car. Where did you see these two? I have been enjoying Josh on UA-cam for a while. Seeing him in person is on my bucket list. Love the range of music he covers. Thanks for recording and posting.

I consider myself a Christian (I'm guessing some other commenters would debate that...) and the God that I believe in is not so small and humorless that they couldn't get a chuckle out of something like this. Anyway, this is from the Crystal Ballroom in Somerville, MA. This duo was a real pleasure to see in person. I love watching people who clearly enjoy making music, especially when they are good at it :-) You are most welcome!

I too find appeals to primitive superstition offensive to human intelligence. But that does not stop me having an emotional reaction when I listen to Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Josh and Mary are talented and hard working musicians who produce very good very good music. In the same way I can enjoy Qawwali or Faure’s requiem, I appreciate the hours of dedicated practice these two talented musicians devote to producing these brilliant performances.

I remember it on Alice's Restaurant but I see it's no longer listed. I wonder if it was cut. His politics slid to the right in the 90s. I wonder if he thought it was disrespectful or something. In high school we sang that song thanks to Arlo. The rest is a mystery.

Id say as a Catholic with an Italian background, a plastic Jesus on the dashboard is essential. Then a magnetic St Christopher. Magnetic you say. Yeah I’m pretty old. Dashboards had steel in them once upon a time. The Bygone are awesome.
