I’m a SAHM and I remember when I started making sure I got up, dressed, and ready for the day even at home. I love my home life, but it’s so demanding with 3 littles and a growing portfolio of traditional skills.
And today my 5 year old said at the table “everyone say three cheers for mom! She cooked the green beans the right way!”

I am a homesteader now but I came from the suit and tie culture. I had to dress to the nines daily with makeup and every hair in place. That is what built confidence and the can-do on a daily basis. You take away the outer appearance and the insecurities formulate. I had to face those and find the inner strength that was always there, just not seen or acknowledged. I grew personally. I found who I really am and what I wanted in life. I love being a homesteader. My philosophy now is "the cows don't care". In other words, the makeup and every hair in place is counterproductive on a farm. Out working, my hair is in a ponytail, to keep it out of my face. Makeup would be smeared and you would scare the cows. Haha I am usually covered in dirt, leaves in my hair, or other things that would have just not been acceptable in my other life. I can now function in either world, but it does not define me. There are so many simple things to find joy in but just the "I did that" brings joy every time you see it. Whether it is building something, planting, harvesting and preserving, or watching a cow munch on hay you put up, it all brings joy.

Years ago a friend mentioned “blessing her home”, as she cleaned she spoke blessings over her home. I enjoyed that thought, so started using the same plan as I cleaned. Gave me joy to think of blessing my home-to be a blessing.

What a great idea! My standard attitude towards cleaning the house or the yard is grudging. I don't like doing it, see it as negative, yet I shouldn't as I have a decent house. I live in the city, it's half a double, but lots of room. It needs renovations inside, yes, but it's sound.
I'm going to try out your suggestion. My current attitude is, frankly, an ungrateful attitude towards a gift God has blessed me with.

Would love more content on how Carolyn manages the household when she's early postpartum and isn't mobile, and when baby is very needy and she can't be present with the other kids the way she would normally be.
Sincerely, a mom of one newborn baby with colic who can barely manage to take care of the two of us all day and the house is clearly suffering for it 😂

One is brutal. Especially when you are watching a mom of many lol I made that mistake early on in my mothering journey when my first had colic those early months. Multiple kids mean multiple hands able to wash dishes and switch laundry and help other littles with simple tasks. Just take a deep breath and one minute at a time.

Enjoying your channel. I think that a majority of people are feeling the fear due to what is happening in our country and a lot of folks have lost their trust and want to know how to take action and be prepared for the worst. My husband has to remind me not to worry about the things I can’t control..and last night was one of those nights. I stayed up listening to music, my mind shifted as I listened to Michael W. Smith ‘Our God is an Awesome God” and Amy Grant ‘El Shaddai’ I was up lifted singing along and shedding tears for the people of Israel.
Music is powerful and having a song on your heart and a Mighty God to talk to anytime helps center your life.

When I decided to buy my place people thought I was a little bit crazy. It’s just me. Except for one brother. He just talked to me about protecting myself. He’s gone now but I haven’t forgotten his support. I’m learning and growing even when it seems a little overwhelming. I just pick something and do it and remember why. The tasks even help clear my mind from jumbled thoughts. Joy and the delayed gratification…it’s good.

I loved hearing your views on this. Thank you. And thank you for being forthright in speaking about your faith in Jesus Christ! I feel like I've never been anything but a homemaker all my life 😂 I know I never wanted to be anything else. The Lord put in my heart a deep desire to be married and have children. But even then, I didn’t know how to raise children, or how hard things could be. I just knew what I had seen my mom doing as I grew up. She was a homemaker, and a hard worker. I learned all my skills from her. I miss her so much. But I'm so grateful for all of that, and that I can pass it on to others. A young mom visited our house on a Sunday after church one day, and she was watching me walk back and forth from the kitchen to the table. She said, "You're a servant." It kind of took me aback. But then I said, "Yes, I am." I'm not a slave. I choose to serve my family and the children I'm blessed to teach Bible lessons to. God is so good!

Gosh Carolyn, the truth in your words really moved my spirit and resonated completely with me. Intentional relationships, creating the beautiful in the otherwise mundane is where my Mum passion goes, perhaps not thinking that through to other areas as much. A wonderful reminder. Let us all make beautiful from every single scrap of the mundane.
    Beautifully stated Carolyn.

Thanks Josh and Carolyn for this longer pantry chat and this topic! This is something I have been working through the last 2 years about my why and realizing I never really accepted or embraced that I am a homemaker. My focus has been elsewhere dreaming about not homeschooling etc especially in seasons of challenging ages. BUT because of my love of canning, preparing, etc I have discovered the truth in homemaking that I was lacking. That what I do is important for my family and have found that I have joy in preparing meals and providing practically at home. This has helped to quiet those other voices. The selfish ones. And to look forward to being where I am at. I'm grateful that God walks with us through the hard stuff.

I’m new to your channel and I have learned so much!!! I got the subscription for the digital magazine, this Thanksgiving our family will be trying some of the yummy recipes!! I have recently retired from 33 years teaching in public schools. I want to say kudos to all of you who are homeschooling. When I began my teaching career I believed with all my heart every child deserved a quality education in this country. My last year of teaching I would tell parents if you can homeschool I highly encourage it. My 3 children are grown, 2 are homeschooling. There are times when things are overwhelming they question if they made the right choice. I tell them they did. I’m in the background for support. So on those hard days just remember you made the right decision! I have a mini homestead that I am so excited to get the opportunity to do all the things I dreamed of doing when I was working. My first challenge is creating the ecosystem environment for my garden and home. I feel blessed to see the beauty God has given us❤. I will be tuning in regularly and looking forward to the next magazine 👏👏 Thank you so much!

My mom prefers most of the hard veggies like green beans and carrots to be blanched before she puts them in the freezer dryer, she's certain they taste better. I have made carrot chips that I partially steamed the carrots first lightly sprinkled with salt and then put them in the freezer dryer and liked them much better than freeze dried raw and definitely better than any of the commercial carrot chips I had ever had.

We have always been told that joy is found with the material things that we have. And although there is some joy to be had in those things, it is often fleeting and a never ending search of more. Finding joy in the little things around us like the stillness and quiet of a warm fall evening, or the counter filled with canned products from your garden takes discipline. We can always say we should have done more or I should have...but it boils down, in my opinion, to our tendency to always find the negative rather than the positive and the joy associated with that positive. Enjoy the small victories and the special moments as it will bring much Joy to your life. Good conversation!

The ONLY 2 things we are tasked with....Is "To love thy neighbor" & "To love the Lord". The more you do that, the more JOY will come without you even trying! Be in the world, not OF the world. & you won't really get fought the whole way...because within a short period of time, all the naysayers fall by the wayside & you are swimming on your own, baby! We weeded out ALL the negative people & influences in our life, no matter how hard or hurtful, at first. Look for older women/men to partner with - ONES THAT SHARE YOUR FAITH.

I am alone and don't have a husband. I don't consider myself a "lonesteader." I have my animals and my garden. YOU are still a homesteader who is grounded in what is needed in todays society. Your husband is behind in the awakening process. He will understand when there is no food on the shelves. In rural area's the grocery stores are slim pickin for your grocery items. Larger cities are still fully stocked. This is Agenda 21. They want everyone in compact Agenda 21 cities. I suspect food is going to be very scarce for people in rural area's. Unless...you grow your own and find a farmer to buy milk and dairy from.

When homesteading or even homemaking feels overwhelming or isolating, imagine getting up at 4 am to get ready for work, waking, feeding and dressing all the kids. Load them in the car seats, drop some at one day care, the baby at a different daycare and the others at school. Get back on the 6 lane freeway rush hour and park in the ramp or large parking lot, wade through the blizzard snow, get to the time clock and try to look put together and professional by smearing on some lipstick. Work your shift, wade back to your car, hit the freeway in rush hour, pay cash for the late fee at one daycare because you can’t be at both at the same time. Back on the freeway stuck in traffic with the baby crying, the others hungry and fighting, you have to pee, you finally turn the corner to the neighborhood with cookie cutter houses and get to your driveway to find the school kids locked out of the house since they got off the bus ! Now make supper, feed everyone, clean the kitchen, help with homework and make lunches for tomorrow, give everybody a bath, read books and get everyone to bed. Finish the kitchen mess, start a load of laundry, fold clothes in the dryer, get everyone’s clothes and backpacks and diaper bags packed for tomorrow…….
It should help make it easy to find joy in being home with your kids and being a homemaker on a homestead !!!
    Blessings

I’ve got a lot of loads under my belt and it’s frustrating watching/seeing new people who have no idea how to get started. Thank you. As soon as it’s published- I’ll be sharing for you! I’m ok, as far as freeze drying, canning and freezing. But making cheese, I’ve got zero idea!

I’ve been homesteading for about 10 years and I’ve been watching you guys for many many many years. You taught me to can and bake bread and do herbal medicine and make cheese! My children that have been with me the whole time are growing up and not all of them want this lifestyle. How do I Deal with a teenager who wants to go get a fast food job and be out of the house a lot. I still need my farm hands and I miss the days when we all enjoyed this life together. It ends up being so much more work on the rest of us if some of them want to lead a different life now. So I’m trying to let them find their way a bit.

    • @rnupnorthbrrrsm6123
      @rnupnorthbrrrsm6123 8 місяців тому +2

My thought- I’m not sure how old they are but let them go, then require them to help financially to help support the home since they are not doing farm/household chores. Maybe expect them to purchase some of their own food since they are not contributing to gardening and preservation. Let them pay for their own vehicle, insurance and gas. Slowly let them see how the world is, let them get a taste of having a boss and a work schedule that they have no choice in, let them spend their hard earned money on groceries……you’ll see a change !!!

Hi Tracy, Nothings worse than when expensive appliances need replacing.Something I decided some years ago is that I’m not going to buy any more new appliances. I’m going to replace them with secondhand items. Might that work for you? Do you have any secondhand or thrift shops near you or a Goodwill store or try Craig’s list . You might find something useful. Hope it works out for you😊

Question? How do you deal with situations where family and friends drop in? Being home has certainly come with challenges through the years, but I have found the last few years that I get bombard with family and friends that want to stop in or expect because I am home I am free to do anything. I do love to visit, don't get me wrong, I have just felt overwhelmed this summer with this topic. Is anyone else finding this an issue? And if so, how have you coped or handled it?

The relationships are a BIG deal when everyone is at home! There is a funny meme floating around on the internet right now that shows a husband who has just retired coming up with a homemaking "Efficiency Plan" for his wife. The punch line is: why wives live longer than their husbands. This is an issue at our house! Hubby has no idea what I have to get done in a day. NO IDEA! But I have to give him as much grace as I can because he is struggling with how he fits into the whole picture.
