    What’s the Memoirs of a Geisha movie about?
    In 1929, a young girl from a poor fishing village in Japan, Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), and her sister Satsu (Samantha Futerman) are sold by their father to the owner of a geisha house. They are quickly separated and Chiyo finds herself confronted with the strictness of the housekeeper and the harshness of the life of an apprentice geisha. She also has to face the jealousy-ridden hostility of Hatsumomo (Gong Li), the star geisha of the house, who succeeds in relegating her to the status of a simple servant. Chiyo has lost all hope when she is suddenly seduced by the kindness of a man (Ken Watanabe), chairman of an electricity company, with whom she falls in love. She then decides to do everything she can to deserve his attention. Another geisha, Mameha (Michelle Yeho), takes her under her wing and begins to teach her the rudiments of the trade by becoming her "big sister". Thanks to Mameha and helped by her determination, she soon becomes, under the name Sayuri (Zhang Ziyi), a famous and admired geisha throughout Hanamachi. But success does not bring her closer to the one she secretly loves because a geisha no longer has the right to love. Moreover, Nobu (Kōji Yakusho), the president's close friend, is interested in Sayuri and interposes himself between them. It will take the Japanese rout of World War II and the end of age-old traditions for Sayuri and the president to finally be together.

      This line made the whole movie. Because the whole time you’re thinking “this isn’t enough!” and want her and him to be together, but life is cruel and unfair, and like it said “these are the memoirs of a Geisha”, basically saying this is her lot in life, which she wanted and prayed for as a child. What a perfect line.

    Why this relationship isn't weird:
    The chairman did not have any attraction to Chiyo when she was a child. He was just showing her kindness. He only met her once. They didn't have a relationship where he raised her or groomed her. He met her one time, forgot about her, then he saw her again many years later when she was spying on Pumpkin and decided to help her out by sending Mameha her way. After that, he became interested in her for the woman she had become.
    In Chiyo's case, it's not weird that she developed feelings for him when she was younger because she was a child. Kids develop crushes on adults all the time. Think of a kid crushing on their teacher. As she got older, her feelings developed from a child-like crush to a more mature attraction. It would've been perverted if the chairman liked her back then because he was the adult but in Chiyo's case, it's harmless.
    I am someone who is easily disturbed by a romantic relationship if it's depicted with a weird dynamic or anything that could be perceived as grooming, but I think the criticism this relationship receives is undeserved.

    By far the most romantic scene in the history of cinematography ever!! The script, the facial expressions, the pace, the embodiment of the feelings...the bitter deep love, the release of a sigh, the overwhelming gasp at hope after prolonged years of excruciating despair, like that drop of water that touches the throat of a thirsty outcast...it is too much excellence in one small scene. Brings me to tears each time.

      Two things to reflect on:
      1. Even today, our media churns out feel-good stories about individual kindnesses within a horrific system but if you seek to change the system, you face vicious backlash. How does that influence the way we read stories like this?
      2. The author was neither a woman nor Japanese, and the geisha he interviewed in his research said that he had been disrespectful. How does that influence the way the story was written?
      “That’s how it was” isn’t the end of the discussion. It’s the beginning of a whole new one.

    It is a bittersweet film to watch. I feel sorry for the lives all of these women endured. I’m glad that Sayuri and the Chairman finally found love, with one another. It is something I’m still hoping for, with someone, whom I hope actually loved me, some years ago, but life’s timing was off. Still, I feel so sorry for Hatsumomo, Pumpkin and the other women, much in the same way I’ve felt about life. It has never been good enough, for me to sometimes win alone. I’m still struck by the losses of those who never will. Hatsumomo and Pumpkin were likely seen as embittered, merely in and of themselves, when their bitterness came from the outside in, spoiling their joy. But, as I’ve learned in life, people punish those, who don’t make their peace with Hell. I hope, for them, too, they find happiness.
    My own story doesn’t have nearly this depth, yet I still hope for the same ending.

      A man sees a child on a bridge, instead of buying her contract or helping her, he left to be sold into sexual slavery or the life of the Geisha, another word for prostitution. Beautiful clothes and sweeping music still doesn't cover the real tragedy of the geisha, it's amazing how little it takes to make people gush.

    I read the book years ago, when I was in my early 20s and thought it great. Just finished reading it again not even an hour ago, it's still good, but hits a lot different on many levels. Especially the last few pages, in this day and age, talking about change and reminiscing on the past.
    I want to watch the movie, though this scene right here shows me that no matter how good the movie, the book is (almost coughITcough nobody needs to read how the kids celebrated ohmigosh cough) always better. 4 minutes of screen time do not capture all the nuances, emotions, and so forth that the writer crafted so convincingly with words alone.
    To read the book, you would believe it was like a Japanese version of The Diary of Anne Frank with a happier ending.
    This movie still looks beautiful, though, and I do want to see it.

      I love the book and read it every time I want to get lost in another world. So I get what you are saying. The movie has made some changes but it holds its own quite well. I have an anniversary special DVD which shows all the efforts that were put into making the movie. The sheer production effort is simply fantastic. It brings a lot of the vivid colors of Japan alive. And of course the acting is amazing, especially by Gong Li as Hatsumomo. Do give it a try.....

      @yoursafeplace8476 2 роки тому +3

      The problem with reading a book is that your imagination has no limitations to it, such is why the book is often better than the movie. As a story moves closer to reality, the more constrained it becomes, the more limitations are placed upon it. Thus the closer to reality it gets, the more disappointments it will have.

    • @deecilla5087
      @deecilla5087 2 роки тому +1

      @@yoursafeplace8476 This was my issue. The imagination part. I've watched countless of Asian movies that I knew majority of these actors and it kind of removed the enjoyment for me. They looked the part I guess but the nuances a Japanese person would have put into these roles would have elevated this movie more. I have nothing against the Chinese actors. I love all of them but, again, I was hoping to at least have more Japanese actors in these roles. I wish they could remake this with a purely Japanese cast with deep rooted Japanese traditions showcased like how it seemed in the book. I doubt that will ever happen though.
