Thanks so much for starting a tools series. I can't wait to learn how to care for the tools. The ones the hubby got me are black steel branch cutters made in Japan, and apparently they need special care to prevent rust?

    • @katyb2793
      @katyb2793 3 роки тому +1

You can buy Kreanmate, it's like an eraser that rubs off the rust. Keep them dry is the most important thing!
My tools are currently in the mail on the way, so I'm not sure what else.
But I think oiling the blades helps prevent rust? And maybe storing them not out in the open, especially if you live in a humid climate or near the sea.
The black ones are carbon steel and can definitely rust (heard they're better though, or at least more preferred)
      Good luck!

Hi, Nigel, I hope you're doing well!
I'm quite far behind, but now I'm trying to catch up on the videos again...
What an interesting tool box. So much stuff in it, it was like watching a cartoon. I'm looking forward to the series!

Thanks for the tool review and how to keep them sharp and clean!!! Just a thought… That toolbox seems like it might be better being your “other toolbox”. It’s very big and heavy, and the pockets seem much deeper than they should be for easy grabbing and using of small bonsai tools. What about getting a smaller and lighter toolbox for everyday use that keeps things within easy reach? Again, just a thought! ☺️

    The scissors at 10:05
I use the same for work on ficus only. They are quite strong because of their form, but cheap and do the job. The best thing about them is that ficus will sap fast and a lot after cutting, so after working on ficus you just throw the scissors in the dishwasher. You don't need super sharp edges for ficus because the wood is not hard so this is very handy.

Great video Nigel. I'm working on building out my tool box. I got an aluminum one from Canadian Tire. I'm going to get my fiancé to vinyl cut some bonsai logo for it on her cricut one of these days.

Just went from Aussie Bonsai Bloke to you. Dramatically different climates! Reassured that at 300m in the northern UK I don't have such extremes. Think the Big Bag can be for all the stuff you use occasionally and just have a small tool roll for the four or five regular things? Proper sharpening is a skill...

Think this video is very useful and gives you hints and ideas what you can use instead of just go out buy sets where you actually not need or use parts of them. I can also relate alot on how you pack tool boxes bags with "junk" over time lol. Another message is also that you should aim to limit the amount to those you really use and those you don't which is easier said and done in practice imo 😅

  • @Liisa3139

Recycle all those scissors that you don't use. If you ever run short of scissors, you can easily get a new pair. Give the green wire to Laura for her greenhouse. A smaller toolbox for the important tools that you use all the time might be more practical than this one or maybe just a wallet type pouch that you can stick into your pocket.

You can buy one that is small for the tools you use the most and use the one you have for the ones you don't use. There's so much that you don't use against the ones you use, so I think you should have a new one for the ones you've fixed and use. It's so big and clumsy, but your choice.😋

Have a look at rust removal using molasses Nigel, It takes awhile but is incredibly effective and non corrosive. I mix it 9 parts water to 1 part molasses. You`l find lots about it on youtube.

Hi Nigel , I never know what tools to have with me , a couple of things for what it’s worth , you should be able to buy a new spring for those older secateurs , and I’ve been thinking about the way you use your heater/fan arangement of late , I’m no scientist or whatever but you have the fan effectively blowing colder air over the heater , so does that stop the heater warming up to its optimum temperature and not warming the space as well as it could ? Might be worth an experiment placing the fan in different places , I dunno … anyways looking forward to the sharpening lessons , I don’t have much luck in that department , thanks as always for your info and entertainment 👌

Hi Nigel.... how do u guys deal with such cold... I live in South Africa and the coldest I’ve ever experienced was probably -2 during one of our winters and it only lasted about a day or two and then went back up above zero again. Our winters very rarely go below zero.... anyway keep warm and thanks for the videos👍🏻

I think you could also use more scissors!

Thanks for the video Nigel! I've always wanted to ask, where did you get those leather/gold Fiskars pruners? I've wanted a pair since I first saw them in your videos, but I can't seem to find them here in Illinois, in the US.
Thanks again for making videos! I really enjoy them

They were a special edition Fiskar pruner sold at Canadian Tire for their anniversary. They were only available for one year and sold at Canadian Tire only. I have a brand new pair in the box that I'm keeping as a collectors item. I tried to buy more, but they were hard to get.
