Great tips! Having a extra supply of neutralizing shampoo on hand is great. And if I might suggest for the at home ladies, invest in a three-way mirror to hang on the back of your bathroom door so you can see the back of your head while relaxing. It’s a lifesaver. Thanks so much!

Definitely need a separate bottle of neutralizing shampoo for sure. Whenever I relax my own hair, I am very generous with the amount of shampoo that I use and the number of times that I wash out my hair.

When I used to relax I had a separate bottle of neutralizing shampoo. I would rinse the relaxer out of my hair and shampoo it and rinse it out. I’d shampoo it again and let it sit for 10 minutes. I’d rinse out and shampooed it again, and let it sit for another 10 minutes and rinsed it out. And I’d follow up with a protein treatment. That seemed to work for my hair and it never broke off.

Hello, this is the first time tuning into your vlog. You are 100% right. My hairdresser of 30 years has taught me well about relaxers. When she does my touch up , she washes out the relaxer with a neutralising conditioner must be about 5 or 7 times and then uses a normal conditioner. Also a regular trim. Trimming the ends of your hair is so important if you perm your hair. Relaxer is basically a perm. Love the content of your vlog 🙏💖

I relax my hair using that same at home kit and my hair is growing a lot. It really depends how you care for it, I use the shampoo but not the conditioner some times.

I use box relaxers but I've always used an unusual method. I apply the shampoo, work it through my hair let it sit for about 10 minutes. I do this 2-3 times with the neutralizer from the kit. Works for me but I get what you are saying. That neutralizing process is important!

    • @SA-xz2yn

The other thing I've noticed about the relaxer in the relaxer kits vs. the professional relaxer is that the relaxer substance in itself is cheap and thin vs. the professional relaxers are rich and thick. That makes it much easier to manipulate and smooth your hair with a professional relaxer. My hair broke off immediately when I used a boxed relaxer during the pandemic, and I actually had my own supply of neutralizing shampoo and rinsed very thoroughly.

I have not relaxed my hair at home for over 10 years and it is a game changer. I did use boxed relaxer, the cheapest one in HS and college and my hair never grew or was healthy, just dry and frizzy. I left it on too long, used super when I did not need it and washed it out with the little packs that came in box that barely did the job. Until I went to a salon and they washed it like three times, letting it sit for a few and then used PH balancing product, moisturizing shampoo and then deep conditioner, I did not know my hair could grow this long. All while relaxed. The active ingredients in relaxers are the same as in Nair and other depilatories so the length of time you let that sit matters. I will never relax at home again, I am down to twice a year at the salon.

I think also with box (no lye) relaxers you need a chelating shampoo because of the calcium deposit makes it harder to moisturize hair

I stopped using Neutralizing Shampoo about a year or just over. I use to self relax but got tired of doing it myself so i went back to the salon, i only go to get my relaxer done. As much as im get it done there now i still dont Neutralize, my hair dresser just shampoo 3x with my KeraCare Humecto shampoo (my request).
My hair is healthy as ever still and at bra strap.
For some reason Neutralizing Shampoo was setting my head on fire when i washed out my relaxer even though there would be no burning or tingling when the relaxer was in my head. I started to hate relaxer day due to that so i said F Neutralizing Shampoo and stopping was the best thing i did

I’m natural but YES to consultations. Your first time at a salon, meeting your cosmetologist, or seeing their work shouldn’t not be in the chair. Talk to them, have questions ready, and ask MORE questions during your first hair appointment. This could make or break your salon experience.

If you’re afraid of relaxers than you should also be afraid of the pesticides in food, the air we breathe and the rays from our phones.
There are people that smoke for decades and don’t get cancer and there are people who live a very healthy lifestyles that develop cancer.
Don’t let yourself be fear mongered by every article your read. No it is not a myth, relaxers can cause long term damage but so do probably a couple dozen other things you do on a daily basis. Just make the best decision for yourself

Agree! Oftentimes, the kits don't have enough relaxer in those tiny jars to evenly touch up the roots. The person applies _too little_ out of fear of running out of product which can cause unevenness or UNDERprocessed results. The person will have the same results as OVERprocessed hair - Dry, rough, frizzy, hard to style, breakage😢
I use the big bottles of neutralizer. I wash/rinse until there are ZERO suds. Then rinse again. I do not care if the hot water starts to run cool, as long as the chemicals stop processing.

I started traveling for work and couldn't find salons in area to do my hair mostly Caucasian area so, I started doing my own relaxers for about 3 year's, I immediately noticed my hair thinning and breaking seemed it wasn't growing because it was breaking. I was forced to go natural hair started thriving again I highly discourage doing you're relaxers at home unless you're trained to do so.

How do you really know if you been going to Gloria for over 30 years? If it is the case that there is a lack of nuetralizing shampoo then I would be bald and I'm no where near bald. Look into the research, a lot of it was misdirection. Women relaxing too often, letting it sit until it burns and then rinsing based on their own testimonials. The study never said the relaxers were the cause just that they could be the cause. Correlation is causation. Relaxers have the same active ingredient as Nair the hair removal kit and there is no cry that that causes cancer but somehow on black skin chemistry and science acts different. Any chemical when used incorrectly or too often will have repercussions. Relax as seldom as possible and paying attention to the time for application.

Salon relaxers burned my scalp. They're too harsh and stylists never pay enough attention to not touch my scalp.

The country I live in, you are better off using relaxer kits and doing it yourself because the so called professionals will over process your hair. I use home kit that doesn't come with neutralising shampoo so I have a separate neutralising shampoo that rinses my relaxer out completely .

I disagree : relaxer Rise the ph of hair, neutralizing shampoo lower the high ph caused by crème relaxer. Thé solution is not use more shampoo. Thé solution is lower the ph of hair with acidic shampoo (redken for example) or with acidic rince (apple cider vinegar). Relaxer dont stay, its the ph of hair that IS not correclty lower. Its acidic-base réaction

Something very important that I learned in cosmetology is that the shampoo isn't what can remove Hydroxides, only water does that. rinsing is MUCH more important than shampooing

I am not relaxed anymore but also I dont think it is chemically compatible to use regular shampoo with relaxer residue still in the hair. I think that can also be damaging to the hair. So it is an absolute MUST that you neutralize the relaxer until it is completely out of the hair before using regular shampoo. Regular shampoo opens up the hair shaft, so if you still have relaxer residue in your hair, regular shampoo will open up the hair shaft, possibly making it worst. So don't think that you can just use your regular shampoo. Do what Dom says and buy a bottle of neutralizing shampoo. I am a natural girlie but I love seeing black women with their own beautiful, flourishing hair.😊

This isn't true. I've been using Dark & Lovely for a looong time; it has plenty of shampoo, and even when I went to a salon they never used that much shampoo. Even my cousin who had his own shop and showed me how to get that stuff washed out properly.

How about stop using relaxers period. Poison to the scalp and hair. Yes, I wore a relaxer for many years in my younger years. As a licensed hairstylist I advise against putting lyes in your hair. Fun fact, water neutralizes the chemical in the hair so rinsing and then rinsing again is the key!
