Brilliant stuff, Josh. I was mostly a street and landscape photographer, but I wanted to broaden my skills and tackle more portriat stuff. Working with models really takes communication and coordination that I'm not well-versed with yet.
@@Christo_glenn So glad you took away a thing or two from my video on portrait work! I’m always striving to make my conversations around photography much more human and natural feeling, as opposed to overly technical! Appreciate the support so much!
Man, fantastic job! Sometimes I struggle a lot trying to build a connection with a model. This video helped me do it from simple to complex, always remaining chill and enjoying the shooting. Thanks, Josh!
I want to be a fashion photographer, but I don't know how to pose models. This video was very helpful. I would be very happy if you make more of this video.
This is an absolutely fantastic video. Perfectly explained, beautifully shot and the use of a very experienced model is great because it shows the kind of results that you should be looking for especially when working with more inexperienced models.
You hit the nail on the head! It’s all about building trust. Once they trust you, there is an invisible wall that get's broken down and you can really start to make some art.
love the video!! maybe you should make a video, filming a session with you shooting with a beginner model and guiding the model!! i think this will make some good contents😀
Would love to see your top 10 tips in another video with an amateur first time model or even family/friend so we could see your suggestions in action. That would really reinforce the recommendations and see how the tips change the outcomes in real life. Thanks for the tips!
So sorry to goof up your analytics. I had to re-watch this four times to gather my composure -- Grace simply annihilated my attention span haha. I'm sad she isn't a west coast Cali model in LA or SF :( I think to add to a rock-solid basket of tips here, I think that every amateur photographer should work with a professional model like Grace as soon as they are able -- it's really mind blowing how many more of the shots will end up being keepers (almost the opposite ratio of working with someone that is a newer or completely inexperienced model), and the shoot is always much more collaborative with a pro! But seriously, keep it up -- jokes aside, this is clearly and observably your best video yet -- editing, content, location, and model are all so on point!
Great tips man! I'd like to add on to your last tip there for people starting to work with models you can use a mirror so you can see yourself doing a pose that you want to model to do. And it should go without being said but NEVER touch the model. Even if you mean it in no way its just something you don't do. 🤘
Yes and YES! Agreed completely. You should never assume that you can physically interact with your model. IF you feel that it is absolutely necessary, then you always need to ask before doing. The mirror tip is amazing!
A lot of great tips. Maybe you should have added a section nine. How music can make your shooting way more easy. Music helps models to feel what mood they should express. It is another leading line which gives them orientation, and makes life as a photographer easier, because you don't have to explain a mood if the music does the job already.
I totally agree! I actually love making music a focal point to a lot of my shoots, I feel like I could make a whole video just on that topic hahaha. Thank you for the support!
love the video, I'm just starting a project, where 90% of my shoot is portrait, and I've been going to Pinterest for inspiration, so I can show to my models an exact pose and work from that, much like doing homework hahahahaha

Grace is gorgeous yes! And she is genuinely a professional model, which definitely helps! But, you need the experience on both sides of the camera to make a photo look good!
Not true. The model doesn't make a photo. The photographer makes a photo, along with help from the model. I've seen plenty of good looking models, even ones with lots of experience, look "meh" because the photographer didn't do his job.
@@77dris Come on man, if a so called photographer is not compentent, then all bets are off, new model or super model. I have been in this game for over 55 years. The advice to new photographers wanting to shoot fashion, nude, glamour, or any of their derivatives has always been to start with an experienced model in the beginning. A pro model has probably more experienced than most photographers, because she constantly works with a variety of photographers with different expectations and standards. She would be in a good position to guide an inexperienced photographer and make the shot. This has nothing to do with looks of the model or the body or age. A lot of inexperienced photographers constantly try to ' direct ' the model. Most pro models hate this. Best to let the model get on with the job and just try and isolate those moments that make that money shot.
@@lensman5762 I agree with this statement. However, I don't agree with your original post because it makes it sound like anybody with a camera can take great photos with a model of this calibre. If that is not what you meant, then I misunderstood.
Quick question, how do you get a model? I'm a pretty shy guy and I'm a complete beginner, I did photo shots of cars and other things, but I have NO experience with people. So how do I get someone to work with? Are there websites for it or should I just go for a walk and ask if I could take a portrait of them?
I'm going to make a video about this pretty soon! In short, it's all about being able to approach models online in a way that is comfortable, open, and confident! More on this to come in a future video...
I am terrible at this! This video made me think differently and I just hope I can remember some of what you said when my next chance comes... those come very seldom.
