Pernell Whitaker, along with Meldrick Taylor, and of course Mike Tyson were my favorite fighters that I looked forward to watching as a kid . Every I fight I watched, it seemed like he dominated. Pernell Whitaker. He was truly unbelievable. Everyone now talks about how Floyd dominated the smaller divisions but if people watch film here on UA-cam of “Sweet pea” , they would enjoy him just as much as they enjoyed watching Floyd . Neither man got hit very much . Both masterful .
Is it me are where commentators off most of the fight. Obviously sweet P had to nueturalize the strength and feet by allowing Diaz to Swing wildly the first three rounds. What was he supposed to do walk into a fresh shot. Also, most of those punches where hitting shoulder and elbows from the defense. IDk maybe I'm not seeing things clear enough due to the VHS.

Eso fue un robo a mano armada. Cada vez que lo tenía el Poli el árbitro separa, se permite hasta el lujo de empujar al árbitro. La chulería peleando en Madrid se le hubiera quitado a Whytaker. I gave Diaz the first three rounds despite the alleged “knockdown” in round 2. At the end of round 4, it appeared that Diaz broke or at least hurt his ribs. From then on, Whitaker was both the aggressor and the winner of the following rounds until the final round where Pernell did nothing and was actually saved by the ref at one point. It was very interesting because Whitaker usually was a counter puncher backing up but he was bated by Diaz into his style of fight and Sweet Pea came forward as the aggressor and really took advantage anyways. 27:11 it was a knockdown. He clearly fell because of the punch - if Pernell would've missed with that punch, Poli wouldn't have fell. The ref and Foreman made the right call. If you watch the original knockdown you'll see how obvious the knockdown was. So obvious the ref had no choice but to start counting. They then proceed to show the replay at the top angle so that you can't see him lose his footing after the punch and then to try to make George look like a fool. Lampley and Merchant were always tools.

Podía haber ganado, pues salió mucho más fuerte y rápido que Whitaker, pero estaba claro que EEUU no dejarían ganar a un boxeador español desconocido para ellos, allá en su casa. Si Poli hubiese ganado ese combate, su vida habría sido distinta hoy en día. Los dos luchadores acabaron mal, Whitaker falleció atropellado por un coche y Poli con problemas de drogas y arruinado. En la revancha Whitaker, ya mas consolidado como boxeador, le dió un buen repaso a Ramírez. Whitaker ha sido uno de los grandes del deporte, campeón en 4 divisiones, fíjate sus derrotas, todas muy discutidas y contra grandes leyendas del boxeo. Poli era un grandísimo boxeador dentro de la escena europea, a nivel mundial no dio la talla y eso es algo irrefutable. Su actuación ante Whitaker fue más que digna pero se evidenció que su boxeo estaba lejísimos para anular el arsenal del americano. Ni aunque hubiese ganado dos asaltos tampoco le hubiese servido de nada, Whitaker lo envió a la lona y le rompió alguna costilla, además de lastimarlo y conectarlo continuamente. Creo que a Poli le descontaron algún punto por golpes bajos también, aunque no estoy seguro. La acción arbitral que comentas es irrelevante, incluso aunque hubiese mandado a la lona a Whitaker le hubiese bastado al americano apurar la cuenta de protección, aún y así Poli conectó pocas manos, ese golpe desestabilizó a Whitaker pero no sintió el mismo. Watch the first fight with Mcgirt. Buddy was the bigger fighter and for the majority of the fight Foreman was ripping on Pernell’s strategy. Later on the fight we see why and how Pernell’s game plan was effective

116-110 Whitaker. You Hispanics that are saying Diaz won, are you just being a racist homer or did you actually score the fight for him? I am genuinely curious. I gave Diaz the first three rounds despite the alleged “knockdown” in round 2. At the end of round 4, it appeared that Diaz broke or at least hurt his ribs. From then on, Whitaker was both the aggressor and the winner of the following rounds until the final round where Pernell did nothing and was actually saved by the ref at one point. It was very interesting because Whitaker usually was a counter puncher backing up but he was bated by Diaz into his style of fight and Sweet Pea came forward as the aggressor and really took advantage anyways.

27:11 it was a knockdown. He clearly fell because of the punch - if Pernell would've missed with that punch, Poli wouldn't have fell. The ref and Foreman made the right call.
If you watch the original knockdown you'll see how obvious the knockdown was. So obvious the ref had no choice but to start counting.
They then proceed to show the replay at the top angle so that you can't see him lose his footing after the punch and then to try to make George look like a fool. Lampley and Merchant were always tools.

Poli metió mucha cabeza en el combate y eso dió mala imagen ante los jueces. Podía haber ganado, pues salió mucho más fuerte y rápido que Whitaker, pero estaba claro que EEUU no dejarían ganar a un boxeador español desconocido para ellos, allá en su casa. Si Poli hubiese ganado ese combate, su vida habría sido distinta hoy en día. Los dos luchadores acabaron mal, Whitaker falleció atropellado por un coche y Poli con problemas de drogas y arruinado.

En cuanto a los asaltos, según los resultados anunciados al final, Poli, con este árbitraje y ambiente claramente adversos, ganó dos.

A Whitaker le pudieron robar la pelea (la primera), bajo mi punto de vista favorecieron a Ramírez para buscarle el duelo con Chávez, de todas formas fue una pelea muy cerrada. En la revancha Whitaker, ya mas consolidado como boxeador, le dió un buen repaso a Ramírez. Whitaker ha sido uno de los grandes del deporte, campeón en 4 divisiones, fíjate sus derrotas, todas muy discutidas y contra grandes leyendas del boxeo. Poli era un grandísimo boxeador dentro de la escena europea, a nivel mundial no dio la talla y eso es algo irrefutable. Su actuación ante Whitaker fue más que digna pero se evidenció que su boxeo estaba lejísimos para anular el arsenal del americano. Ni aunque hubiese ganado dos asaltos tampoco le hubiese servido de nada, Whitaker lo envió a la lona y le rompió alguna costilla, además de lastimarlo y conectarlo continuamente. Creo que a Poli le descontaron algún punto por golpes bajos también, aunque no estoy seguro. La acción arbitral que comentas es irrelevante, incluso aunque hubiese mandado a la lona a Whitaker le hubiese bastado al americano apurar la cuenta de protección, aún y así Poli conectó pocas manos, ese golpe desestabilizó a Whitaker pero no sintió el mismo. El árbitro interpretó que hubo tropiezo, Poli también hizo de las suyas y fue marrullero ante la impotencia de sobreponerse al boxeo del rival. Además de todo ello, Whitaker era el campeón y mereció pelear en su localidad natal.

Eso lo dice todo. Pero sabemos que en el boxeo no siempre gana el que teóricamente es mejor. A veces hay sorpresas, y una escena de una posible (digo posible, no segura) sorpresa, aunque difícil, era una pelea entre el campeón mundial y el europeo del momento, en España, de la categoría de ligeros. Pernell peleó en España meses antes de su pelea con Poli en EEUU. Me hubiera gustado que el rival fuera Poli (con todos mis respetos a Márquez), y que si se hubiera dado la sorpresa de que ganara Poli, se le hubiera concedido a Pernell la revancha en su tierra. Creo que eso hubiera sido una opción más atractiva para el mundo del boxeo, y creo también que en España lo hubiéramos vivido como una auténtica fiesta (incluso aunque al final se impusiera la lógica y ganara Pernell).
