Installing Windows On A Cargo Trailer
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- Time to install the windows on Nikki's new 6 x 10 cargo trailer! It's not that difficult if you know how to measure twice and cut once... We'll show you how to take the measurements on the inside, transfer them to the outside and layout the lines for the cutout. We cut all the layers at once, i.e. outside skin, insulation and inside paneling. This would be the same procedure on a van or any other type of RV.
These windows are available here through Amazon:

Welp. Here goes nothing. Iv watched this 100 times. Im standing here with my drill nervously procrastinating drilling. lol
Go for it! But go forth slowly.

Pretend ur drilling Swiss Cheese
Just found your video! Windows are next on my 5x8 overland conversation. Cutting into the walls has been really intimidating. Your film really is helping and you make it look easy, Thank you 🙏
I know, cutting into those walls is a little scary.
Howdy - it is really nice to see people doing projects with patience and planning without 10 minutes of repeating yourself jibber jabber, the throwing and dropping of tools and materials, and 10 second clips of 3 hours of work...
I heard "silicone" mentioned. It seems that word has sneaked into our language to mean "sealant". There are proper sealants for use on the outside of vehicles that perform much better than hardware store "silicone" products.
Great channel. Thanks
She is so lucky to have a dad that knows how to do things!
She's totally worth it. Thanks for checking in RVingwithG.
@@gonagain I'm lucky too. I bought my trailer WITH windows in it... and one is 2'x2' !
Thanks to your daughter for letting us follow along! We really appreciate it.
Thank you Sheila.
A job well done Rick.
It is fantastic that Nikki has adopted the same style of camping.
She used to have a tent trailer but wanted something easier to heat and hard sided for our bears.
OMG..!!! You are the first builder I have seen who actually knows how to vapor barrier his trailer..!!! Smooth, moisture impenetrable insulation surface facing the interior, with a vapor barrier tape (aluminum tape) sealing the exposed joints.. 3 mil plastic roll sheeting over the insulation will also fair well if you can install it... This proper method prevents the interior moisture from passing through/behind the insulation and condensing on the cold metal surfaces creating rust & mildew.. This allows the moisture to remain inside the habitable/heated area, the same as any home, until you open passive/power vents to remove it.. BRAVO..!! LOL! Want to lessen interior moisture buildup..?? Stop Breathing..!! Estimating where the windows should be doesn't cut it... A scale plan should be drawn BEFORE windows are installed..
Good info!
I noticed that too.
I am interested in the vapor barrier you mention, I am just about getting ready to install the 1inch pink board in my 6x12, can you or @goneagain explain this?
Cool saving this to watch again right before I do mine🍻
Loved this video. I cracked up when you covered your eyes and said “here?” 😂😂. Nikki & Dusty’s trailer is so cool. It’s wonderful to have supportive parents. Whenever I mention the idea & dream of living nomadically, my dad says I want to be a bag lady & is very discouraging. Tells me I come up with crazy ideas. I know he means well & wants the best for me but I need ppl who will support me even if my lifestyle & dreams do not align with what they want me to be. Anyway, excited to see how their trailer turns out😊👍🏽
If you are interested in living nomadically I think you should try it. You can always go back to sticks and bricks whenever you want! Well, there is an exception... If a person sells a house and then spends the money on a new RV and uses the rest of the money to live on, then change their mind and want to go back, they have nothing to return to. If you decide to do it out-of-pocket, with a less expensive outfit (like a TON of people have done), then you can pull it off easily. I say follow your dreams.
@@gonagain very well put. It's always better to follow your dreams. If things don't go they way you expected, well, at least you tried and you will not have the regret of not trying.🙂 I wish you the best.
Gonagain Thank you!😊Yes, that’s exactly what I want to do! I own a home & my son is in college. He graduates in 2022. My plan is to take an intermittent retirement for one year & live on the road. I don’t want debt so I’m currently saving for one year of expenses on the road & I plan to buy a minivan & configure it to live in. This is why my parents think I want to be a “bum.” They simply do not get it. 😔 My dad says I should keep working so I’ll have a decent retirement. He worked until he was 65. Now that he’s retired, he can’t really do anything because of health issues. My parents stay in the house glued to the news all day. That’s not a life I want to live. I don’t even watch television 😃
Beach Bum Thank you so much!!😊
@@mysticalmisfit1332 I think you have a great plan and you need to tell us how it's going. Keep working (at quitting)!
Good information. I like watching you work with your daughter.
Today I installed the two windows in my 5x8. Vintage Technologies 14"x21" windows fit perfectly between the 16" center wall studs; opening is actually 14.5". I've done van windows/sunroofs in the 1970s and sailboat ports/hatches in the 1980s so this wasn't a total unknown. I made a template for the first one and the hole was a bit small. Second one I used the frame as the guide and it popped right in. The self tapping screws didn't like the window frames so I pre-drilled all the holes and then they zipped right in. Neoprene gaskets on the window frames but I also put silicone around the outside as there were small gaps at 3 places. Suddenly, it doesn't look like a cargo trailer anymore. Your video was a big help.
Sailboat ports and hatches? We been down the same road! Glad the video helped you Jack.
Good job Rick, You saved your family a lot of money just by doing that. Its also nice that you still have a close relationship with Daughters! Hey, see ya on the next one!
I enjoyed this video thoroughly. I am about to install some windows in my trailer, and this took a lot of the stress out of the planning. My 2 and a half year old son watched on my lap quietly and that is a rare occurrence! Good job fam
Yep, just measure and then measure again. Think about how the frame fits.
Thanks for all you guys do Used all your tips. Installed roof vent and 2 windows on our new 14x7 toy hauler/camper. Thanks again we watch you guys all the time. Mike Cummins
Thank you for watching our videos! And glad our tips helped. Aloha!
Your family works so well together. You really did such a good job cutting for the windows.
We do manage to have fun together. Thanks for tuning in Jody!
Just to say hi from UK and loving your channel thanks 😊
Hello back at ya Robert!
Nice work on the window install and your other projects, good methodical planning. I'm glad to see someone besides me using a jig saw with a fine tooth blade. So many other vids use a cutoff wheel which in my opinion throws sparks everywhere, is prone to slippage and leaves a rough jagged edge that can cut the the rubber seal but mostly, it just plain looks bad and amateurish. In my cargo trailer that I wanted to still have the option to use as a cargo trailer, I had to do a little more planning and go slower because I have three rows of E-track on the side walls. Low, 12 inches from the floor; mid height; and up high, 18 inches down from the roof. Which made installing insulation a lot slower!
Great step by step instruction!
Thanks for watching Craig!
So very nice to see family working together. Thanks for sharing-much love to you all. Looking forward to the next video. 🙏✌🇺🇸💞
Jo-Ann and I just finished watching this video. Nice job on the windows. It looks great.
JT
Thanks for watching JT and Jo Ann!
I think I’ll hire you for all my jobs on my trailer
Oh oh.
Hey Rick. I'm realy enjoying these videos fixing up the kids trailer. I've always wanted to fix up a cargo trailer. They seem to be much better built than the camping trailers. And less likely to leak. I hate leaky tents or trailers. Great job 👍🏻👍🏻🙂
Yeah Bill, being all welded, they hold up really well.
@@gonagain 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This is so good to see this build. Thank you...
Nice! Great watching the progress. Thank you for sharing.
I hope your having a nice evening cdLady54.
@@gonagain thank you. I have a nice productive day today. You, Linda and the family have a blessed evening!
Good job on the window install!
Missed you that day!
Great job Rick. You show so much pride in your work. Love watching your videos. Looked like family fun!!
I'm blessed with a great family for sure. Thanks David!
Dang, I got so much out of this. I thought I was handy but You D Man!! Thank you.
You guys are great, love your camper, Im on the same path, thanks
I dig your videos and adventures sir. I’ve been collecting parts and pieces. My project starts soon. Fingers crossed.
Your going to enjoy doing it because the reward is all the fun you're going to have with it when you're done. It's also a good feeling at the end of each day to see what you've accomplished.
@@gonagain this may sound like a silly question, but like what you did I’d like to cut both the outer ( aluminum sheeting) and inner ( thin lauan ) at the same time so the hole line up perfectly. I have a garbage harbor freight jig saw that I don’t think will cut straight enough for my liking. I’m willing to get another. What brand do you suggest that accepts blades long enough to get me the 1 3/4” I need? And that has a good strait cut. Thanks!!
That's a hard question for me to answer because I don't know what your finances are like, but any of the professional grade saber saws will work great. These would be Milwaukee, Dewalt, Bosch, and Makita. They're not inexpensive, but any one of them will last you the rest of your life. Mine is a Bosch. Also, I'd go with a battery operated one.
Sounds good.
I really enjoy your channel.
Thank you.
Thanks for watching Buster!
Yes learning to line it up to fit hopes screws
Yep exactly the way to do it! Good job!
Well done Rick, your a good dad. Measure twice before you cut or as in my case I think I measured for my windows 4 or 5 times LOL Have a great week.
Was just thinking about you. I hope you guys are doing well.
@@gonagain Were doing well, thank you for asking. I installed the Dexter axle flip kit on the trailer several days ago and picked up 5 1/2" additional clearance, 19" overall.
@@explorer867 That's going to come in handy.
Isn't this now the THIRD cargo trailer conversion in the family? That's great!
Yeah it is! Thanks for stopping by Keeb.
This was a great video. Thanks.👍👍
Remember to level off your trailer before you layout for the cut
Why?
Why??
I am about to install mine. Same width as yours (12") but only 22" tall. I drilled a 1/2" pilot hole yesterday, and will cut out the big hole today.
It's a great improvement!
Interesting information and informative.
Great job as usual
Thank you Maria!
Thanks for this video. Just did my window.
Glad it helped!
Thanks Everybody ! TAKE CARE..
You've been an inspiration for my 7 x 14 cargo trailer build! Build is done, and we love it! I may do small side windows and will refer to your video! Thanks gang!

Nice job on the windows. Looks good. Will be installing my windows in Oct. I am both excited and apprehensive. I am debating about installing one in the door. Anyway, have fun, stay safe and stay healthy.
We'd like to put one in the door, or at least a door peep of some kind.
Big like from me Rick👍🏻💛🙏
Thanks, Bill. Nice to hear from you as usual.

Thanks for watching Shelly!
Well done
Thanks, Michelle!
Tape off the silicone bead around windows. It looks factory when complete. Thats how I maintain my travel trailer windows.
Great job thank you.
I hope you film the whole build, this is exactly what I've been wanting to do with my 6x12 but wasnt sure how best to go about it. Great content!
I hope these first videos help get you started. A 6x12 makes for a nice trailer.
_Nice job, and windows. I have a couple little saying/ tools that drive people crazy if there a small goof-up on anything. 1) Nothing 1/4 inch caulk can't fix! 2) Hell, can't see from my house, it good! Just saying, those are the most important tools to have in your bag! : )_
Those sayings are handy. Here's one: "The difference between a journeyman and an apprentice is that the journeyman knows how to cover up his mistakes".
Gonagain lol no shit!
If Nikki was concerned about loosing storage space why did you all not decide to place the window into the door……therefore maximizing indoor use? Very nice video. TY
Nice Job.... I am in the process of converting an 8x16 v-nose cargo trailer into an RV and Mobile Sign Shop. I am just starting the walls and cabinets construction. I just sold a 15-passenger shuttle bus that I lived in for 3 years and traveled out west during the winters. I had to sell the shuttle bus because I purchased a large format color printer to make contour cut decals/stickers, koozies, t-shirts, magnetics, banners, mousepads, etc. The large format color printer would have taken up a lot of storage space so I needed to get something bigger. I did a complete conversion series on the shuttle bus from the ground up and now am doing a new series on the cargo trailer conversion. They are on my YT channel.
That 8x16 will make a nice rig for your needs. Look back in our videos to see the 8x16 that our friends travel with (February, 2023). It might give you a good idea of size to see how they did theirs. I just watched your last video and it's looking really good!!
@@gonagain thanks will do... always looking for ways to do something
Great job, one question is there any reason you put the screen part on the bottom and not the top. All the Best to you Folks.
Yes, so the channel drains would be on the bottom. Thanks for watching!
Nice! 👍😎👍
Thanks Troy.
Nice ! Is that trailer a 6 x 10 ? I looked back thru your older videos, but it didn't say. I saw a Toyota Tacoma coming towards me pulling what was probably an 8 foot wide trailer, and it looked like it stuck WAYYYYYYY out on both sides. I want the trailer to have the same width footprint as the tow vehicle of choice.
Yes, ours is a 6x10 trailer.
Always scary to put that first hole in the skin of a cargo trailer. Good example of how to do it properly.
That was awesome thanks
Good job , i was thinking what if any do you have for safety from electric or other fires, because we had to get some friends out of their trailer when it ought fire while they were asleep, and they only had one door and the fire shut that escape off and their windows were to small to get out of so the only way to get them out a was cut them out with a axe to the wall big enough to get them out of the burning trailer...
Good warning Jimmy. We usually have the back door unlocked from the outside and barrel bolted on the inside so that we can escape, but we've been neglecting to do that lately and you've just reminded us that it's important.
@@gonagain thanks for letting me it was helpful to be reminded...
When you have to lines come exactly together, aren't you supposed to drive a golden spike or something?
I'd be lucky to have my cuts within 1/8"
Nice work. What size screws did you use and did you pre drill for the screws or simply screw them into what seems to be a bit of a channel?
The windows come with screws, and you're correct about them going into a sort of channel.
OK... I'm ABOUT to make my first cut. into my trailer's skin! 🙁 But, before I do may I ask you one more question please? Should I cut the 15"(15"x24" window) wide part of the hole right in the middle of the 24" On-centers leaving 4.5" gap on each side? Or, cut closer to one of the 1" frame rails to support the one side? How did you do it? Looks like u cut right in the middle. That being the case, did you have to make wood supports around the frame of the window or just used the plywood as support? I would gladly pay you (or anyone) that helps me! Thank you! Art
Hello Art, happy to help. You'll see that we also cut through the 1/2 inch interior paneling and that's what gives the window the necessary support without having to add any additional wood. And, yes, it just happens to be right in the middle in this case. With the foam sandwiched in between it's plenty stiff enough.
my wall is 1 1/4" (insulation and plywood) with the aluminum sheathing of the trailer being 1/16th"...do I order a window for 1 1/4" wall or do I have to go to a 1 1/2"? BTW - you make everything so easy to understand!!! Thanks!!
Hello Jean, it should be listed in the specs of the window that you want to install. You could use a 1-5/16th inch clamp ring window and be ok.
thanks for sharing this, If you have thicker walls, could you not make this work by using larger screws? obviously there would be a little extra gap between the window trim and the window frame...
Also, will you be putting cladding on the OSB? if you did put cladding on, I'm assuming you would put the window trim on the outside of that...??
Hi Jonathan, you can order these windows for various wall thicknesses to accommodate what you have. My daughter is just going to paint the walls that she currently has and not put in additional paneling.
@@gonagain ok, makes sense, yes, it looks like motion windows does custom window builds. Thanks for the reply! enjoy your travels sir!
You all ways do good work. How do you wash your clothes when camping a bucket & plum.
If we can't get to a laundramat in some small town, we use a bucket and a plunger mostly. Check this video out for another idea that we use occasionally: ua-cam.com/video/gT7RtkPimJU/v-deo.html
Looking good.
I just purchased a 7x7x14ft trailer.

Just got my Cargo Trailer no window's and planning on putting some in.
Let the fun begin! We're constantly making changes to ours.
Nice to have a place to do the build, we (wife and me) rent a room in a home that's in an HOA neighborhood and I don't have to tell you about those. Since this is a family channel I can't tell you what I would like to do to the person(s) that came up with the HOA'S.
Been there! No HOAs for me.
Thanks for doing the video can I ask where you found the ceiling material? Also will those windows work with a wall thickness of 1 5/8 inch
Thanks for an6 info
You can usually find suitable ceiling material at a good lumber supply store, like Home Depot. Yes, those windows will work in that situation.
It's funny, you end the video saying, "ready to get to painting!" .......and I haven't done that yet, but it's been so hot out!! Soon.
You're lucky though because you only need to do the walls. Get your sister to help!
@@gonagain and floor I guess.....and yes, I can do that!!! Lol
Working on a used motorcycle teardrop has the rv window ,appears to have a inside frame the window is out of the trailer now...fell out only paid 125 bucks for the trailer....does the window snap into the inner frame ?
Hello JJ 2021. No, the inner frame screws to the outer frame. It's important to buy a window that's made for the wall thickness of the trailer you're working on.
Could you get your daughter to put the name of the back screen for trailer somewhere on here. I am looking for just the thing. Thanks and keep the vids coming!
I got it Jeffrey! Here it is on our Amazon site: amzn.to/2Qh1Dd5
My only recommendation would be not to install a window that close to the door. Makes it much easier for someone to break the glass and unlock the door from the inside. Great job!
Thank you!
Great job on this trailer. What is the price of those windows you guys put it in.
These are the windows we've used. It's important to order them according to how thick your trailer wall is. It looks like they start at around $110 each: amzn.to/37rT0W7
If you buy it through my link I make a small commission, but the price is the same for you.
Are windows a must Gonagain? Im thinking about just adding 1 in the side door.
We use ours for the ventilation and wouldn't be without them, but I guess that would depend on where you are and what kind of temperatures you'll be camping/traveling in.
@@gonagain Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Nice job as usual. What kind of material is the white roof covering? Thank's for the video.
It came pre installed on the trailer and it's a vinyl covered luan ply.
As always you have a great deal of influence on decisions being made in regard to my 7x16 enclosed. I guess that means you have elevated to "Influencer" status from just a prolific and practical UA-camr. I have the windows and I have the tools on hand (really need to get a new corded jig/sabre saw) to begin surgery on the side walls and the personnel door. My question is what type of blade did/do you use in cutting the opening for the window? A metal or close tooth wood blade? Also, I will be cutting thru one 1 x 1 1/2 rectangular steel tube frame upright as the wall windows are 15x24 horizontal and a 15x24 vertical for the door. I will be so glad to see some progress on mine as opposed to the acquisition phase of items and parts. Thanks and happy trails.
I was using a high quality metal cutting blade that was the longest one I could get. Make sure you have a few on hand before you begin. On my steel cargo trailer I also remember resorting to the Sawzall to get through the steel supports, but a saber saw will do it with the extra blades on hand. Like I mentioned in the video, don't push the saw along or the blade will wonder off course and ruin the cut. Go easy.
Quick question: What jigsaw blade would you recommend? If you could share the specific information that would be amazing! Thank you in advance!
I have a Bosch brand saw and usually use their blades. I used a long, fine-toothed metal cutting one.
I love Nikki's music does she have a CD. Thank you saying saber saw
Nikki does have a CD! Contact me at : gonagain21@gmail.com and I'll get you in touch her.
There seems to be a debate that some kind of framing needs to be put when doing windows. Whether that be a 2x1 or something on the inside. Question I have is, did you do that or think you might need to? And what did you do with bigger windows such as a 2x4' or something (if you ever did that)
I wouldn't put any wood in the wall because of the possible condensation and rot, but I've seen where people have welded in extra framework to make the wall more solid when installing larger windows. If you cut a vertical frame, then you would install a horizontal piece to tie the cut ends together, like framing around a house window. It's one of the main reasons we went with these small windows because we didn't have to cut any framing. Others have said that if you're only cutting one vertical frame it's no big deal. Whatever you do, don't use wood.
This was so helpful! Looking into purchasing our own trailer soon to travel! not sure if you have shared this info, but what brand are the windows? thank you!!
Glad we can help. As for the windows, I just figured out what size I wanted and what the wall thickness was and then ordered them off of Amazon.
@@gonagain did you include the outer trailer liner in the thickness? I'm having trouble locating that info for mine.
Nice. 2cts: I would have put a bead of silicone caulk on the lip of the window and then pressed it into opening. As soon as screws are installed inside - you can clean off the excess caulk extruded outside of the frame....I guess I'm paranoid about water incursion. Oh, the 12x24 windows no longer available on Amazon 4/2021
Thanks, I'll see if I can update that link.
Thought Walter White was doing this video when I first saw this guy. Legend
great job, how much do the 12x24 cost? cheers

Thanks for watching C. B.!
What brand is the aluminum trailer and how much does it cost? Any recommendation?
Hi Craig. My trailer is a Stealth brand and is well made. I bought it lightly used so I'm not sure what a new one costs. There are some Facebook pages and online forums that talk about the different brands and what they're like. Mostly, when you go to look a one on the lot, you can see if it's any good or not, but by researching that brand before you go you should find reviews about it.
If I had one that's the way I would do it
Hi, just wondering what type tires you run on your to
Tow vehicle?
Ralph Williams
BF Goodrich All Terrain KO2s. So far so good and it didn't change my mileage much from the Michelin highway tires they replaced.
New friend here sending some support..let's stay connected
Thank you for watching!
What bran name of Windows are they?
Is that a 1 in thick wall?
Yes, the walls are 1" thick and the ceiling is 1.5".
I used the same windows, I removed the seal and used silicon instead.
I'm trying to figure out how to get the screen out for repair!
@@gonagain I haven't tried that yet
Why do you have to cut from the outside in?
Because the outside provides room for the saw to move around as I do the cuts.
