- Jason Falkner performing live at the Spotted Mallard in Brunswick, Victoria, 1st March 2018. This was Jason's night off from performing with Beck during the Australian leg of the 'Colors' tour with his old Jellyfish pal Roger Manning Jr.
I was there to take some photos of Jason but decided to film the show when low lighting made stills too difficult. At the 8 minute mark I found a good stereo mic in my bag, so the audio improves at that point. Apologies for the focus issues in a few of the songs. I was shooting with a heavy Canon 70-200mm lens and didn't have a field monitor, so checking focus on the run was difficult. Sadly my battery ran out at the 50 minute mark so I missed the remainder of the set which also featured Zombies & Kinks covers.
Setlist:
Very Best Years
Revelation
I Go Astray
Hectified
Holiday
Miss Understanding
I Don't Mind
Goodnight
Stephanie Tells Me
She Goes to Bed
I Live
Extremely underrated to a level that should upset humanity.
His talent makes fame extremely overrated !
Agreeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Short list: One of my favorite song writers.
One of the greatest of our time. Beautifully catchy power pop that is unmatched. I once got to see him do a living room concert with 50 other people in Marina Del Rey. Just him, an acoustic, an electric and a keyboard. Jason is living proof that the music business does not base fame on talent. Look forward to anything he does :)
Jason Falkner is a great artist who should be on the radio, but because of corporate BS it's not going to happen, it's a shame.
One of my all time favourite guitarists and songwriters - criminally underrated.
Holy Shit! How did I not know this??? chord progressions and creativity are beyond words....there are little hints of his Jellyfish days....ah....go back in time.....He was the unsung hero
His solo albums are where it's at.
Get ALLLLLLLLL his solo albums. You won't be disappointed with any of them.
Jellyfish didn't record anything that Jason wrote. The first song here, "Very Best Years" is one of the five he wrote that appears on the Grays "Ro Sham Bo" disc. All the rest can be found on various solo releases.
Great production values and Jason's skills as a multi instrumentalist make his songs come alive on record. Yet, his songwriting skills result in songs that come across with just his voice and guitar. Fascinating when one considers all of the great vocal and instrumental arrangements we hear on record! That and the fact Jason's fans are loyal. We love JF.
The songs deserve a large audience and a full band.
How does he do it??? The chords and melodies are on another level!
Kevin Gilbert (dead) and Jason Falkner have written some of the greatest songs with brilliant voices!
My two favourite solo artists. :)
What Kevin Gilbert album should I start with?
@@andybristol5488 :Toy Matinee - then THUD! & Shaming Of The True, Andy - a BUNCH of non-album stuff on 'Nuts' & 'Bolts', TOO (Giraffe stuff, is VERY interesting as well.....)
Well, if ain't Mr. Melody himself.
Alway's a pleasant surprise to see something new from this master class of a musical genius within our lifetime.
Superb performance JF
I LOVE most of Jason's songs.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, The Clip King! I was there with my friend; both of us big fans of Jason. Couldn't believe I had the opportunity to see/hear this wonderfully talented dude in a small, musically friendly venue in the 'burbs of Melbourne, where I live. Thank you for preserving the memory, The Clip King and allowing us to relive it. It's very important! Liz. xoxo
No worries Liz, it was a great show and i'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
Sooooooooo good! One of the best singer, songwriters ever!
Come to TAMPA ! How about Ybor City? I'm there!
+1 on that ...next time Beck comes we’ll book an aftershow ...
For real. We need some US shows. The last show I saw him play was 1999.
Power Pop Genius. I would have gone had I known the man was playing in Melbourne.
"Author Unknown" and "Can you Still Feel" are two of my favourite Lps.
Same! Had no idea he played down here until I saw this video. I love his work with The Grays and the fact he opened the set with Very Best Years is joy to my soul. I love All Quiet on the Noise Floor too.
Harry Grosomanidis I wanna cry ...have loved this man so long and would have done anything to see him play here!!
So many people saying the same thing: “Shit, man, I didn’t know he was even in Australia.” His tour promoter’s doing a shit job.
Harry Grosomanidis it was a side show to Beck’s tour....no cover charge! He just wanted to play...not much promotion, just a bit of FB sharing from memory. Room was packed. Keep your eyes on the next Beck Australian tour...JF still plays with him.
@@neeni4 I like Beck , but in terms of catchy hooks and melodies this guy is my go to.
Jason needs a full band to execute his genius!!!
King of Pop
tim groves king of melody.
The last song is "Made up my mind"...it's a new song. I think it hasn't been officially released ...just live...(Thank you for posting)..."Revelation... and "I don't mind" shivered down my spine...as always...Thank you Jason...WE LOVE YOU...New album please!!!
Great to hear him play Hectified!
Oh I just love this! And he started with a Grays song!
Man, Jasons tunes are so good!!
Wow!!! Great find by accident.
Goodnight is one of my very favorite JF songs. Such an original chordal progression and melody! Outstanding!
thank you!! would love to watch him live personally! he´s a genius.
Thanks for posting. I love him. Hope I get a chance to see him again in LA. Once at the Troubadour is not enough.
Holy Shit. Those chord changes... Brilliant. Loved seeing these solo renditions and actually hearing the conceptual elements of the songs so clearly displayed. I'll just slowly take off my guitar and maybe go take up knitting...
Where would we be without Jason?
Never want to find out, the man is brilliant!
easily top 10 best of youtube. thanks for recording this and uploading!!! jf fan forever
what a wonderful artist! what a great performer: just himself and the guitar
a really fab show
thnx for the upload!
profound thanks to the Clip King for preserving this show, I just loved it.
Thanks so much for posting this. So good to see him solo and playing the songs that made me love him. I have a few points in my life that music touched me and helped me with my career and my vision. He is a huge part of me becoming an animator... I know that sounds weird but I learned guitar to his music which taught me timing and arc and storytelling in a sense.
Thanks for recording this. The only opportunity I've had to see him play live was in 99 with mercury rev
Love the Zombies (and Jason Falkner) and "This will be our year" is one of my favourite songs ever. I have footage of it but stupidly spoke to my husband about the song during the recording :-(
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???????? You came to Australia and I missed it?????
Noooooooooooo!
All I want for Christmas is a new JF record.
I can't believe JF was in AUstralia and I didn't hear anything about it?
Same. I’m fucking gutted.
Mike Sidious It was a Beck sideshow. No charge! Keep your eyes on the next Beck Oz tour....JF still plays with him.
@@neeni4 thank you.
JF,
Is this new "Birdstreets", "Lagoon" ur deal this time plz?
Thx/Blessings,
dUg-Montesano, WA/USA
PS: was this show well attended ? Thnx for the footage ...
Yes it was pretty full and the crowd was totally into it.
A left bollock. That's what I'd give to see him live. (I'd probably give both).
I meant the one before Afraid Himself To Be...😉
What Zombies and Kinks tunes did he play?
I'm assuming the battery on the camera ran out at 49 minutes ... great footage, thanks for posting!
Unfortunately yes Peter, I detailed all the problems I had in the description. Next time i'll be more prepared!
it's "I Go Astray" not "I Go Away"
Rupert Peasley thanks tiger!
anyone know what song that is at 43:20? don't recognize it. love it
it's an unreleased new track!
"Made up my mind" ...and it sounds GREAT!!!!!
Rats, no “Author Unknown”.
Poor show audience, only clapping on “She Goes To Bed”. I recall when he played Dingwalls in London in 2002 we sang it all the way through complete with the 3 part harmonies. There’s a recording of out there somewhere.
Does someone know the song around 29 ?
Goodnight Sweet Night..Closing track from his 2nd album Can You Still Feel..?
Is there another segment?
S A Reyners this is everything I got until my battery died as per description.
I see! No probs, excellent you got 50 mins in there, and pleasing to see him back in Australia! I'm excited to hear his new work, though I know he's been busy producing other projects in recent years.
S A Reyners yes it was a major bummer that the battery ran out but good that it ended up being such a long set!
Great production values and Jason's skills as a multi instrumentalist make his songs come alive on record. Yet, his songwriting skills result in songs that come across with just his voice and guitar.
