I had the privilege of working with John on a film back in the 60's. At night, after shooting, he'd regale us with stories of his theatre productions and inspire us with his love of Shakespeare. How unfortunate that this novice interviewer squandered his opportunity with shallow questions about horror films. In spite of the insipid questions, Mr. Carradine's personal dignity and his respect for the art of acting shines through.

Exactly! This interviewer never veered far from horror

Well, im enjoying his horror movie questions. He answered them very good. He is remembered better in the horror than the theatre because more folks saw him in the movies and tv.. I am sure his plays were wonderful and I would have loved to see him live doing that.

That’s amazing! Did he ever talk about the summer of 1935 at the Pasadena Community Playhouse? They did a festival of Shakespeare’s complete Chronicle plays that summer, the first time that had been done anywhere in the world. Carradine was in a few of them. I’m writing a book about Richard Carlson, who was also there. They performed together in Henry IV Part 1, with Carlson as Prince Hal and Carradine as Hotspur. I would love to hear anything he might have said about that whole experience. Their duel was much remarked on at the time!

I loved him in The Grapes of Wrath and Stagecoach as Hatfield, I wouldn't have known this was him except for the voice..wow!

I watch A LOT of old films and I am always in awe when i recognize John Carradine in a film. I think he is the most of any one actor i have seen in film roles. He must have been in at LEAST a couple hundred films not counting TV roles and appearances.. A true Hollywood Legend.

“The Grapes of Wrath”. I must have shown the films to dozens of my history classes. Never could convince them that it was shot in actual camps just before World War II. A first-rate actor does a lot of shlock just to make a living.

I like his Dracula parts Top Hat cloak gaunt features. I wonder why Universal then were so shy of fangs. Red tinted contacts to boot but I'm sure they did not have them in the 40s. Would have love seeing him with those. I like his portrail better than Lugosi. I liked Lugosi's version too. He needed some fangs also. There is a scene in Dracula where Lugosi bends down over the sleeping woman and he look toothless.

John Caradine was so right about great actors making a movie, a play or television. I recently watched a rerun of the old Lost in Space series where he played an alien and I was amazed at how his role and acting made me watch the entire episode. Take note all upstarts, fans and artists alike this is what a true legend looks like. I have so much respect for the truly great actors of the golden age of Hollywood who had a passion for stage and did everything first class and were really on the line as artists and performers and unfortunately this interviewer is clueless that Caradines work goes far beyond horror. . Respect to one of the greatest actors of all time- John Caradine

Man, this interviewer has a major hard-on for horror! Poor John; it was so obvious that he really didn't have any interest in horror. He reiterated that more than once, but the interviewer was relentless. Geez, give it a rest. Let the man talk about whatever he wants to talk about, and you just sit down and shut up. I can understand why an actor would be resistant to interviews, especially one like this.

4Maestro...I agree. I have appreciated this man's talent and work for many years...father of some sons in movies/TV too. He did the 12% of his movies in the horror stories and even though many of those type of films are junk to me, Mr. Carradine understood real horror as something in life, for real, or in imagination. I wanted them to ask better questions or just let him tell his story. He had a magnificent voice,a great screen presence too. Thanks for your good and honest comment.

Thank you for the interview. I would have never thought that this was Carradine if I heard the voice only. He seemed so relaxed. The sad part that is that the interviewer wanted to hang on to the horror genre. Carradine was so much more than that. One of the greatest scenes is Carradine in "The Grapes of Wrath". That flipping to the portrait of Carradine as "Hamlet" was kooky, but if you are going to do that - at least mention the artist. I'm not sure who did that. His hands are more crippled than Lionel Barrymore's.

My Girlfriend (who also has VERY Severe and deforming Rheumatoid Arthritis) told me a few Years ago that Lionel Barrymore called his hands "claws" sometime around when "It's a Wonderful Life" was being filmed. It is a very horrible disease.

A wonderful actor without any of the horror stuff for which he achieved later acclaim, or notoriety. He himself states clearly that does not represent him at his best. I got a kick out of the interviewers bloopers in wrapping it up.

What a missed opportunity. This great man's career is a testimony to the American theatre & this inane interviewer keeps talking about horror films. What about his stage career & his friendship with the likes of John Barrymore?
    A shambles of an interview!

This interviewer knows nothing about John Carradine's many theatrical and movies. He just wants to talk about horror? That's a small part of his acting skills. He just wants to keep the interview on Carradine's career. Lousy interviewer. Carradine saying the theatre was his life, but this interviewer kept wanting to focus instead on his horror movies.

    • @JSB1882

+redleg56 That whole Errol Flynn story was a lie. lol Raoul Walsh and Flynn are responsible for that story. Flynn claimed that he made his whole autobiography up. Even Peter Lorre told the story claiming he was part of it. The best source of Barrymore's death and what followed was Gene Fowler. Fowler and his son, Will, spent the night with Barrymore and the only person to show up was a prostitute. Carradine was considered part of the Bundy Drive boys, which consisted of Gene Fowler, Will Fowler, Anthony Quinn, W.C. Fields, Jack Barrymore, John Decker, and Sadakichi Hartmann. There's a great story of Barrymore and his first meeting with Carradine, which was pretty funny.
