- This is the 4th in my city skating series where I answer questions from my video comments, Instagram, and Reddit, all while commuting to and from work on my skates. If you have any questions, feel free to drop a comment and I'll do my best to answer them! Thanks for watching!

When skating for power, the toe flick helps, but if skating for efficiency (like when doing the double push) you want to finish your stride in the center of your skate. ^Advice from olympic speed skater Joey Mantia
Some wise words! I accept them!
Interesting points of view indeed.
your toe flick is good , always push with technique
Pretty awesome to be able to watch someone skate my cities streets, as someone who's practicing to be prepared to go out there too.
Thanks! The Tuesday or Thursday night skates are good ones to try out if you're still learning.
Damn those powerslides are sexy!
I've noticed people getting nervous around me when I'm still warming up. Leaving my home on skates is especially difficult thanks to cobblestone on the sidewalks and the roads being quite damaged around my area. It does make me consider doing warmups before going out on skates.
Do you guys warm up before your skating sessions?
Thanks! I would definitely trip over cobblestones. There are some areas that are quite cracked and torn up, but it's just not fun skating on them so I avoid those streets. It spares my foot and ankles from getting beat up from all the vibration. I start out skating a little bit slower out the gate to give my body some time to warm up. Everyone is a little bit different and each workout is a little bit different depending on what you're doing. Minimum is 5 minutes for a general workout, but I give my body 10 minutes to rev up to it. Inadequate warm ups cause me to exhaust sooner. Once my 10 minutes of slow-medium paced skating, I can rev up my engine to medium-fast pace.
What a glorious bike lane, looks like you were ripping! What's the length of the frame you're using in this video?
Glorious it is! Unfortunately, not everywhere in the city has such nice lanes. I'm using 243mm frames for 3x110mm wheels.
I think I naturally do a toe flick when I'm trying to sprint. When I really extend the leg I feel a pull in the middle of my knee, maybe patellar tendon area. It hurts a little but goes away quickly. Is there some stretch you'd recommend to help this?
Does that pain occur on the leg extending or the other leg? I would understand if it was the other leg because it has to bear the weight of the body and decelerate, which is what the quad tendon will play a role in. Not sure if it's the extending leg. I would suggest altering the muscles being used for the push. Rather than using the quadriceps, focus more on the hip extension part of the movement. Drive through the heel to use the hamstrings and glutes. You can still toe flick at the end of it but try this out. It should make a difference. Let me know how it goes.
@@motorlearningaddiction6284 The leg extending. I'll try sprinting and consciously using less quadriceps, maybe that'll work. Otherwise I'll just have to try to remember never to fully extend
Is it okay without cycle lane? In UK it legal on road but not many cycle lanes about
It is ok where I live to be in the bike lane. Sometimes there isn't a bike lane and we just go on the street.
I hope you make more videos
I definitely will upload this month. I just finished school yesterday, but it's raining today so I can't go out.
Re: tutorials: In your ‘narrow roads and Tstop’ video you described a method of T-stopping that is easy on the ligaments and uses muscle instead, that was super helpful. I think there’s some potential here. You could make videos teaching ‘a better’ method of techniques/braking like you did with the Tstop.
Thank you! I am happy you found it helpful. I'm supposed to be making a power slide tutorial video... but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Still doing research to see if it's worth making because there are so many video resources already in existence.
Hey not sure if you have done this already but I'm interested in building flexibility for skating. I've always had extremely low static flexibility and it's definitely posing a challenge to learning many positions. The other thing I noticed was my back muscles felt too week to push super hard when I first started again after 15 years off wheels
I am in the process of finishing up classes. I'll be done in two weeks. I have a lot of requests to go through, but I will definitely begin working on videos again to answer as many questions as I can. It's been a long time since I've posted a new one, but I haven't forgotten about everyone's questions. Stay tuned - I'll look into a training/flexibility series as it is also my line of work.
Hey man hope your doing good. I was wondering if you could do a video like your Friday night skate series but in first person? I don't know how it would turn out but I'd still like to see it
Hi Star Bean, I'm doing well and I hope you are yourself! I thought of a front facing view that doesn't show me skating, but I can just do the same with a camera on my bicycle facing front. I don't think it would be relevant to this channel.
Wish I could skate with you
One of these days we could all do our group skates again like the old days...
I love this style of videos
Are those scratches on your 360 camera? I fell over and did the same haha. Good vid 👍
hahaha it sure is! You sure know your stuff! I'm playing it off as a dirty lens. My poor baby );
Do you have lens guards on your Insta360?
They didn't exist at the time unless I got the water case or venture case... so now I have scratches on both sides :) and it's honestly unusable with the amount of scratches on it. Now there are films you can put over the lenses, but I don't have the money to replace the lens or camera so I'm back to using my phone
@@motorlearningaddiction6284 ouch having scratches sound painful. Sorry about your 360. :( I just installed my lens guards. They make the video a tad cloudy but it's better than getting scratches from daily use. Thanks for the insight!
