- “I Alone" is the second single from Live's album, Throwing Copper. The single was released to radio stations in Canada and the United States, but was only released commercially overseas. It reached #6 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The song was ranked 62nd best song of the 1990s by VH1.
Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk said of the songs lyrics, "People think 'I Alone' is a love song but it really wasn't. The lyrics were more abstract, encompassing a much larger message." He explained the line, "The greatest of teachers won't hesitate to leave you there by yourself chained to fate," by saying that a profound lesson he derived from studying spiritual teachings was that religion and truth must be found for oneself and practiced, rather than just accepting the word of others.
Live performed "I Alone" at the Woodstock '99 festival on July 23, 1999 in Rome, New York.[5] The song was featured in the TV shows Homicide: Life on the Streets, Beavis and Butt-head[6] and Hindsight.
The first 25 years of SNL, & only one band had been given a standing ovation after the show....and it was this band, after this performance.
Which surprises me
He is a phenomenal vocalist.
Oh, absolutely!! 💯❤
Love how bands like this and many artist in the 90s looked like everyday people who you would see in the stores or movies
one of my all time favorite 90s memories
SNL live performances from the 90s were the Best thing of that decade
One of the best decades of music.
@@RS54321Totally agree! 💯❤
Chad Gracey is a phenomenal drummer
monster drummer - - just a beast
Sure
Patrick Dalheimer is a phenomenal bassist.
Saw them live once from 5ft (backstage which was really side stage because it was a tiny place). I could not take my eyes off the drummer; he was a madman.l
@@nascarsteveand he's actually a pretty cool guy in real life too. Like, if you didn't know any better, you'd have no idea you were talking to a rich rock star
Throwing Copper is still my favorite album from the 90s. Every song had a memorable hook, and the whole collection of tunes was strung together thematically, to evoke a specific mood. Well produced too!
I love it and not sure why. Got bored with most of REM but Throwing Copper continues to stand firm.
Niles Crane hosted this episode : )
I'm actually really impressed with them live
I saw them for the first time in 1996, and I remember standing there in the middle of the show just thinking, that's a damn good rock band right there.
Saw them a few times in the UK in the 90's. So much more energy at actual gigs rather than a studio performance. This is still great though 🖤
I was so impressed. Absolutely spectacular ❤
@@abacobeachbumYes! You know exactly what exceptional music IS.💯🆗💖
You're awesome ❤
Glad I came across this video.. when SNL used to play great music :)
Bad ass drummer,
Absolutely ❤
One of the best performances on SNL.
What happened to all the comments?? Yea this is amazing, Chad is such a dope drummer
And it's unfortunate that I could only find one video of them doing this song on SNL. They were always worth watching when they played on SNL.
Sam Nicholson thank you for sharing this, I remember watching this, I was 23 years old and I never thought thought I would see this again. 🤘🏽
@@dillpickle5097 I didn't put this up. Lol I meant that this was the only video I could find of them on SNL on UA-cam.
Lol ahhh ok.. sorry
I love that the other guitarist is wearing a dress shirt. 90s so badass. Only time bands could completely blow the doors off on SNL
If memory serves me right, I remember reading that after this show (up to this date), LIVE was the first band to get a standing ovation at the after party 👏👏👏 Well deserved boys!!!
You are correct 💯❤
I miss the 90s
the best SNL live performance ever
You're absolutely correct! 💯❤
Still an amazing song
This album not winning a Grammy for best rock album of 94 is proof the Grammy committee was smoking crack.
That wasn't even a category in 94 🤔 95 is when they started Best Rock Album
@@dieslow313 a shame that it took them so long if that's the case.
Grammys are just the music industry patting itself on the back, just like the Oscars to the film industry. Window dressing.
😂😅😂
You made my day! No, my week! Okay, that it, you've made my month!! You WIN❤
The 90's!!!!!!
4 am Thanksgiving weekend 1994 or 1995, not sure, driving in the dark through Yeehaw Junction, hearing this. (It's a real place, we were heading to North Florida to go camping). Some songs leave an indelible imprint. Lots of songs from this band have left an imprint 😉. Perfectly channeled talent.
The song itself is philosophical. My favorite line is "Fear is not the End of this". It's inspiring and makes me believe in new life after death. Possibly reincarnation but even more so the sense of Hope and meaning to life and death. Very spiritual.
Wow how deep lol
Ed's lyrics force me to dive deep into the Bible, spirituality, World History, and my Thesaurus. I love it
So it wasn't the drummer doing the backing vocals after all.
Proper high hat usage by the drummer...
Chad is a monster... destroyed it
Gracey or Taylor? Either way, yes.
Lets hear for her back up singers. The harmonies are incredible in this performance...
how did you tilt the video file?
This was probably a ytd from stan smith's channel before being taken down (he had a ton of snl performances on his channel.)
So that the OP doesn't get hit with Copyright Infringement. Damn UA-cam policies/rules that are so beyond ridiculous.
Lol Why are the two guitarists dressed like college professors..
Check out Weezer...this is how people dressed (tongue in cheek).
Just for fun❤😅
It's all good!
Theae guys couldnt make it today to straight white and normal
Still doing well
