Democracy has seen better days in Bangladesh no doubt. Dr. M Yunus efforts, though notable, did not effectively alleviate poverty on a large scale. Microfinance, touted as a solution, has often exacerbated economic challenges for the marginalized. Despite showcasing a few success stories in model villages, the reality on the ground remains grim. It is crucial, as a journalistic responsibility, to hear directly from microfinance clients and former clients, independently of his organization or affiliated NGOs. Their accounts reveal exploitation by credit agents who exploit their lack of education, often resorting to aggressive tactics to extract money. While the concept of microfinance is compelling, its execution frequently falls short. This raises important questions about its efficacy in poverty alleviation beyond isolated cases in countries like India, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and Kenya.
Micro finance is vulnerable to being exploited that’s is for sure. But the question is did Yunus exploit people. The answer is no. Grameen bank’s loans are capped at 20% which is far from being considered predatory.
Just imagine for a moment if Bloomberg media is located in Bangladesh? All the people in power in Bangladesh from 1971 till today, rules the county with iron fist. All of them protected their own party people, do it by breaking the law if necessary. This is Bangladesh in a nutshell, and this is how it will be forever. Like that famous meme swearing roadside politician said, if you say the names, you will lose your job 😂😂
I read "Banker to the Poor". I don't have background in finance so I can't say how true the international organization (I forgot which one. It's IMF I think) counterpoint that microfinance cause middle income trap. But his services to the people of Bangladesh can't be denied. He lifted a lot of family out of poverty, lifted woman's right by making them enable to enter the workforce which makes them important breadwinner in the family hence reducing abuse by their husband, etc. It's a shame his life is muddled by politics.
While Mohammed Yunus isn’t all that popular in Bangladesh because his micro financing bank has been accused of taking exorbitant interest from poor people, the Hasina government is very VERY VERY unpopular. So much so that people wouldn’t mind replacing Hasina with anyone.
As an young citizen of Bangladesh, i want Dr. Yunus as a prime minister. I've watched a lot of interviews of existing ministers are full of sh*t. But, he put all his effort and lifted peoples from poverty.
notice how he said his interest rates were lower and then followed that up with "than other microfinance institutions". The interest rates are much much higher than regular banks, but lower than other similarly predatory "microfinance" institutions
This video was uploaded 13 days ago on July 17, 2024. These 13 days have been the darkest, most brutal, blood shedding days of Hasina's regime when almost hundreds of students have been killed by armed forces at point blank or sniped down during peaceful protests around the country. Victims as young as 4 years old. She shut down the internet so that her killing machine doesn't reach the world.
So, instead of showing any actual detailed information about the cases against Yunus, you guys just showed what the two sides involved say against each other. This video isn't on the Controversial Cases Against Yunus, but on the aftereffects of the cases
Today Dr. Yunus is the head of Bangladesh's interim government. Yesterday was the last day of the dictator Hasina in Bangladesh. All the allegations against Dr. Yunus was false. Today we Bangladeshis are happy to have him as our leader. We hope to have better Bangladesh.
And now Look at him. The Head of Interim Government of Bangladesh. He will now rebuild the country which was diseased by Hasina. People never had so much hope for any Govt except Dr. Yunus.
I come from a similar developing country that adopted microfinance inspired by the Grameen Bank. While it is true that microfinance probably can't reduce poverty on its own, but is often the best option for the poor. The formal banks won't give any loans to the underbanked poor population due to the high risks. And these are banks that are backed by the government. microfinance is the only option they have, it is not perfect, but much needed. As a citizen from another Asian developing country that also has lots of issues today, it seems like the governments want to keep their poor people poor, uneducated citizens remain uneducated because this way, the govt can easily influence and manipulate them to get their votes.
Now, this man is returning to lead the interim government while Hasina fled with her tail between her legs. Time changes everything. Change is inevitable.
Oh the irony, how the table has turned! It should be a message to all the tyrants around the world, no matter how powerful you are today, your reign will end oneday!
I strongly believe that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is behaving like a dictator, prioritizing her power above all else. Recently, she brutally killed nearly 1,000 students and injured 20,000 people in Bangladesh. On top of that, she has arrested 5,000 people in just one day. This level of oppression is horrifying. It's also appalling how shamelessly Hasina has pursued legal cases against a great person like Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Prize-winning visionary who has significantly contributed to poverty alleviation through microfinance. Yunus is one of the greatest minds in Bangladesh, and he deserves respect, not persecution. For the past ten years, Hasina has stolen votes and undermined the people's right to a fair election. This ongoing assault on democracy and human rights in Bangladesh cannot be ignored. The international community must take a stand against such authoritarianism and support those who fight for justice and freedom.
Significant Economic growth is done by poor people, freelancers and remittance. But the average lifestyle became worse due to political greed and corruption.

❤ Thanks for this excellent news report.
As an young citizen of Bangladesh, i want Dr. Yunus as a prime minister. I've watched a lot of interviews of existing ministers are full of sh*t. But, he put all his effort and lifted peoples from poverty.
After all, can they prove the bank interest rates are higher than usual? It looks very easy to find this answer.
notice how he said his interest rates were lower and then followed that up with "than other microfinance institutions". The interest rates are much much higher than regular banks, but lower than other similarly predatory "microfinance" institutions
It's very humiliating to see all this and not be able to do anything about it....
True!
western propaganda as usual
Today Dr. Yunus is the head of Bangladesh's interim government. Yesterday was the last day of the dictator Hasina in Bangladesh. All the allegations against Dr. Yunus was false. Today we Bangladeshis are happy to have him as our leader. We hope to have better Bangladesh.
Now, he is our country’s head❤❤❤
Now Mohammad Yunus Our Top Bangladeshi Leader 🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩
Our hero ❤️❤️
Bangladeshi Student
Now he's the head of the interim government of Bangladesh following Hasina's exile. Crazy how things can change so quick.
Now, this man is returning to lead the interim government while Hasina fled with her tail between her legs. Time changes everything. Change is inevitable.
Now sir yunus is leading our country. What a show!
Well this documentary aged VERY well (now that Hasina has fled and Yunus instated)
As a citizen of Bangladesh,I stand with Dr.Yunus and condemn such statements given by Sheikh Hasina or Mohd. Ali Arafat, they are gaslighting people.
The timing of the release of this documentary is hard to look by.
Equation is changed 180 degree... Alhamdulillah
Forced Hasina to resign and look to make this guy the Chief Advisor to Interin Government. Funny how the tables have turned
Hope the new Interim Government will uplift Bangladesh as a whole. And let's hope Professor Yunus is safe too
Her bellows against the winds of change may have, in hindsight, never stood a chance…
Just imagine if a novel laureate is not safe from the government what is happening with the general people’s of Bangladesh.

Thank you Bloomberg
Now Sheikh Hasina has fleed from the country and Dr Yunus is going to be the the prime advisor of the interim govt .
I proud of Mohammad dr. Yunus from Bangladeshi ❤
Hating Hasing More
Loving Dr. Yunus MOST
oh how the tables have turned. prof. yunus is now the chief advisor of our interim government which we achieved by toppling the authoritarian regime of Hasina.
I personally would not trust someone elected five time in a row 😂 that's either insane political skill or something is cooking in the background.
Absolutely agree with you 😂
Here we are within 2 weeks he’s the head of the new interim government of Bangladesh
Please save the Bangladesh students today 😭😭😭😭
