Tia - so so glad you found your own voice and worked your way towards independence and truth. You did not deserve such terrible treatment. It is amazing how many times I've read about different women seeking guidance from religious leaders and always the answer is "serve your husband and suck it up" - many times with different girls in FLDS, many women in Islam, fundamentalist christianity ... ad nauseam.

Church sanctioned abuse was prevalent in my church. I had so much religious trauma that I could not enter any church for years. The church leaders expected women to minimize and deny the abuse.

My book is being delivered today. I’m looking forward to reading it as a part of my healing. I grew in a black, evangelical Christian home. And went to Independent Baptist school until I was expelled in the middle of 8th grade in the 80’s. I’m in my 50’s and I’m still working through a lot of the racism I experienced there.

As a 60 year old man, my parents were never devoutly religious.
Oh sure, we attended Sunday as children, but we never belonged to any church.
My parents were far from perfect and had plenty of arguments, but my father never raised a hand in anger to my mother. In fact, i don't think my mother would've tolerated it, as strong-willed as she was.
I came from a family of 7 siblings, and we were all close and still are. Our father had nothing but respect for our mother and still speaks highly of his wife even though our mother passed 10 years ago. Our father is still here at 97.
I look back at our upbringing and view our childhood as a pretty normal middle-class upbringing. My sisters were taught to be independent and think for themselves. I and my brothers were taught respect and respect for your wife, and they didn't need the church preaching to them how to raise their children, and we all turned pretty damn good.
That's more than I can say for other families we knew who were devout Christians.

I agree, forgiveness is the f word. I feel no need to forgive my abusers, my older daughter’s abuser, my younger daughter’s rapists. That would not undo what has been done, it would bring no healing or bring my younger daughter back to life. I couldn’t forgive even if I wanted!
