10 years ... starting in 2013. The brainchild of MIKU KOBATO, our flappy pigeon. This band has the most rabid following and the most loyal fans I know. Some of their "off the beaten path" music and B sides are worth seeking out ;) .

Formed in 2013 as the dream of 🌹 guitarist Miku, a series of random chance encounters brought these 5 together. They’ve come a long way. I’m an old blues rock guy and it’s no exaggeration to say this band is the most interesting and important artist since Tool, in my opinion

And seriously after another 5 or 10 songs you still might not believe it until you have no choice but to believe. A miracle band if there ever was one. Peace. 1.3

The Lead Singer's name is Saiki, pronounced like Psyche. They just finished their 10 Year Anniversary Tour. They played Lollapalooza this year, and though the sound and camera work isn't as good as their production company's is, there's a song worth checking out, 'Hate'. It's some time's paired with 'Dice' because there's no pause between them. But even this mix isn't up to their usual standard. They have the room mics up to get the crowd singing along, which is nice, but it makes for a very ambient mix and it caused Akane's kick drum and MISA's bass to be very unfocused, compared to their usual LIVE sounds. If you want to hear what that's like try 'Real Existence' LIVE. That was straight off the board, no room mics. Also, check out their OMV for the season two closer of the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura, 'Shambles'.

Talented band - due to all the time that each of them has put into their instruments. This group is truly a miracle in how it all came together so organically and that each one would be so good and have such a wide range of musical influences. The more you check their catalog (over 100 songs) the more you'll understand how good they are.

The singer's name is Saiki 9:43 (pronounced Sigh - key' more or less). As for the rest of it:
Miku Kobato (rhythm guitar, vocals, main lyricist, band founder) aka 'Kobato', 'Koba' and occasionally Kuruppo or Cluppo, just to confuse you even more. She uses a stage name and her real name is almost certainly Mika Noguchi. 'Kobato' translates as 'small pigeon', which should help to explain all the references to pigeons and pigeon-holes.
Kanami Tōno (lead guitar, main composer, background keyboards) aka 'Kanamincho', 'Mincho', 'The Princess'.
Akane Hirose (drums, percussion, sequencing) aka 'Ah-chan', 'Achi' - likes bananas and claims to be a gorilla.
MISA (bass guitar) aka 'MISA MISA MISA', 'The Barefoot Assassin' - she doesn't wear shoes on stage hence the nick. Has been known to smile from time to time.
Saiki Atsumi (lead vocals, occasional lyrics) aka 'Saichan', 'The Ice Queen ' (but she's a lot less icy these days).
Miku worked in a maid cafe to support herself while she was trying to launch a career as a pop idol, whence came the concept of the band. She got the backing of her management company for a band that wore cute clothes and played cool, somewhat aggressive, music. She found lead guitarist Kanami on UA-cam, Kanami invited drummer Akane (with whom she'd played on her own compositions as a solo singer/songwiter ) to join and Akane invited her BFF (and fellow Tokyo School of Music student) MISA to come on board with her bass. Miku eventually concluded that her voice wasn`t powerful enough to front a hard rock outfit so she half- replaced herself with Saiki and hit up Kanami for guitar lessons.

First of all great catch on the mix there was great wailing and gnashing in the Maidiac nation upon this Bluray release. So.. to get a better feel for their incredible prowess, I would suggest the following sequence:
    - Blooming one of the best MV's
    - From Now On one of 4 instrumentals ( their compositions are very dense and complex, so its good to see no vocals )
    - back to live: Puzzle ( Tokyo Gardens ) is the latest and mix is excellent

Better late than never, Seton Hill. If I told you how you will feel about this band after really diving into the pigeon hole, you wouldn't believe me. Trust me though, dive in! They are a miracle. Oh, and they are so good that you can pick virtually any of their 140 (lost track) tracks, and you won't be disapointed. Just keep in mind that they are all over the genre-spectrum, often within the same song - so it'll take a good 20 songs (!!) before you'll really appreciate the depth of their talent, musicianship and songwriting talent. The songwriting is other-worldly. It's a crime against humanity that all and sunder (especially sunder) aren't aware of these ladies because they are better than any drug - they'll always leave you happier than before you listened. Peace out!

Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

Welcome aboard, Seton Hill Studios. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 188 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (125 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ua-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/v-deo.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Shambles, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): ua-cam.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/v-deo.html)
And many songs are represented with 50 well produced music videos. ua-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” ua-cam.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/v-deo.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” ua-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/v-deo.html

 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
 “P and D⁴” 30+ Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinD2/videos
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: ua-cam.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/v-deo.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: ua-cam.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/v-deo.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]

Welcome to Band Maid. Your one stop shopping for nearly everything music.
My great grand daughters introduced me over a decade ago and it has been a great ride.
I thought good music died in America, but it just moved to Japan.
Rock, oldschool rock, blues, funk, metal, thrash, ballads, easy listening, pop, punk, acoustic, instrumental, coffee shop hippie; pick one and any Band Maid fan can name five or more for you to check out.
I am waiting for them to do a country song so that the complete the set, and I know that if/when they do, it will be incredible.
I envy you the journey ahead with this group. Sadly, I can not hear any of their songs again for the first time. Gladly, they keep writing more.

If you are a musician, I recommend the following three songs.
    Onset live:
    A complete rock instrumental masterpiece.
Just by listening to this, you can tell that they are top notch.
    Without Holding Back:
Very funky bass line and bouncy drum and guitar solo. The talent of the genius Mincho is exploding.
    FromNowOn:
Super tight drum playing and crazy guitar. A undulating base.
BAND-MAID has many great songs, but I recommend these three songs to understand what they're doing behind the vocals.
    enjoy!

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

This mix was a first for the crew as they elected to record from the speakers instead of the board. Their 2017 and 2018 Japan concerts were much better, and from this concert to present is way better mix. Stick around with Band-Maid because these girls are for real! I've been a fan for almost four years, they just creep into your soul and you can't shake them, no matter how hard you try, I saw the LIVE in Charlotte this past May and I never thought I'd EVER be able to see them LIVE, but there I was.

    Maidiacs Incoming! 🎉
    Welcome.
Ten years and counting with the same five musicians. You have plenty of catching up to do
You’re absolutely right about the mix here. It’s a shame for such a magnificent performance.
Band Maid is a musician’s band. Like Rush, Tool, and even Steely Dan long before them. They write complexities inside of accessible chord progressions.
Ask all the questions you have. The Maidiacs are walking Maid-Wikis.
As a fellow musician, I want to send you down the path that offers you the most bang for your reaction time.
    1) “Moratorium,” live @Zepp. Much better mix. Progressive alt rock with more hooks than a tackle box.
    2) “Onset,” official live video. The Maids consistently outperform their studio tracks, and this full instrumental is no exception. Rush meets U2.
    3) “Blooming,” music video. The rare instance when studio is better, so far. If you’re into music theory or songwriting devices? This is a masterclass.
    Enjoy the ride 🚀

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 57 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up. Who are:
Miku Kobato "Little Pigeon" - band founder - rhythm guitar and second vocals. Main lyricist. Claims to be an 810 year old pigeon and makes pigeon noises when she speaks. Po! Very good at poker, into horses - betting on them and eating them. Very clumsy, may fall into ditches. The heart and soul of the band.
Saiki Atsumi "The Ice Queen" - Lead vocalist and frontwoman. The youngest member at 29. Into train spotting and collecting trainers (sports shoes). Very girly, into doing her nails and is a fashion icon. Really into Baseball and the Hanshin Tigers. Don't mess with her you will lose. But she has a heart of gold and a killer dry sense of humour. Recently started writing lyrics. Has final say on songs.
Kanami Tono - "Kanamincho" or usually just "Mincho" for short. Lead guitar and an absolute genius songwriter. Total riff machine. Has two personas. Normally a tiny cute shy and very polite lady who seems very innocent (the band have to explain dirty jokes to her). Until she puts on her guitar. As the band say "then she gets quite violent" - she turns into the shredding rock star she is. Takes guitar off, back to the little girl. Likes cake, coffee and is totally infatuated by Saiki. She adores Saiki very much, to everyone's amusement.
Akane Hirose - "The Gorilla" on Drums. Seems to be the sane member of the band, but is actually the band clown. Has an enormous appetite, seen eating in a lot of MV's. Eats a lot of bananas including on stage, hence the nickname. But she is terrible at actual cooking. Usually has a big grin on her face while drumming manically, Akane was also a DJ (under the name DJ Achi) and likes dancing and goofing with MISA.
MISA (all caps, no last name) "The Barefoot Assassin" on bass. An absolute bass prodigy, MISA is very shy onstage (a total clown offstage with Akane). Nickname comes from the fact she plays barefoot and looks like an assassin. Because of shyness often drinks onstage, you can often spot a bottle of Jim Beam on her amp. She drinks it neat. Lately drinking more beer than whiskey though, good girl. Doesn't say much, but when she does it's usually totally hilarious! At a lot of concerts you will hear the fans chanting MISA! MISA! MISA! which has become a slogan.

Band-Maid just celebrated their tenth anniversary with with a 3-1/2 hour marathon concert at Yokohama Arena this last Thanksgiving weekend. With just about any Band-Maid video (particularly live) it's immediately apparent how talented they are. They have a unique style, all their own, that embraces multiple genres. They're hard to pin down. They take risks and experiment with their songwriting processes; they are immensely creative with their compositions, their lyrics, and their musicianship. Their showmanship and stage presence is unmatched. You have to see their show: a totally unique experience where they play awesome music, then 'take a break' and interact with the audience, ribbing each other, and generally having a great time. You saw how engaged they had the audience during "Domination"? The entire show is like that. Everyone leaves a Band-Maid show with a huge grin on their face.
Here are a few Band-Maid Songs to react to: "Puzzle" live at Tokyo Garden Theater, "Dice / HATE?" Lollapalooza 2023, "About Us", "Daydreaming", "Choose Me", "Endless Story".
They do instrumentals: "From Now On" and "Onset" are masterpieces.
I encourage everyone to visit Band-Maid's UA-cam page and try songs at random: they are consistently good songwriters.
BTW - Band-Maid's 1st video, "Thrill", now has over *Twenty Million Views*

Yeah, the mix is not great on this. Kind of a shame, because this was the last show of their tour, and they had a full team of camera people to record it for a DVD/Blu-ray release, and the band was on fire that night. And right after that show came the COVID lockdown, so they ended up releasing tracks off it during the rest of 2020 to keep their fans happy.

From metal to punk and hard rock, there are so many great ones. Right now, I have been obsessed with Nemophila, Love Bites, and Trident. I just got into them over the summer. Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing and co-lead vocals. Founder Nickname is Small Pigeon or just Pigeon.
Saiki (Sigh-key) Vocals, piano. Band nicknamed her Psycho.
Kanami Tōno - Lead guitar. Main writer for music. Call the Burgermeister as she is the mad scientist of riffage writing the most monstrous riffs to be let loose on the ears. She is pure musical genius. Nickname is Mincho.
Misa Misa Misa - Bass. Nicknamed Barefoot Ninja Maid Assassin.
Akane Hirose - Drums. Strongest and most normal of group. Loves bananas. Nicknamed Gorilla by band.
Got to see them in Dallas House of Blue on Oct 21 2022. Most fun I have ever had seeing a band live. They are much better live than on albums.
Band-Maid concept comes from Japanese Maid Cafés. Miku worked at one where she served Master and Princesses bringing refreshments and food, playing boards games, video games, cute dances and casting magic spells. She thought about being a rock star in a band with cute girls in maid uniforms playing hard rock. Formed in 2013.
Miku wrote down her concept and presented it to her agency. They approved. Internet search and she found Kanami. Kanami worked with Akane and suggested he. Akane had Misa in her music school and thought she might like to join. Saiki came in when Miku recognized her voice didn't have enough oomf.
Miku started to learn guitar to help fatten the sound of the band. Kanami is her teacher. Seeing Kanami and Miku jam together is really special. Kanami is super proud of her student.
That's the short of it. There is a whole lot more.

If you want to hear some more Akane (drummer) songs, you should check out Alone (that's probably one of my favorite songs) and Freedom (Live). Both of those seem like their specifically designed around her. I know there's a lot more, but I've been listening to each of their albums over and over again every day that if they were Cassettes or CD's they'd already be worn out by now. Akane is unimaginably amazing and the more you listen, the more it becomes apparent. Comparing to Lars is like vomiting in her face lol

The greatest thing about this band is that the focus on the entire band. There is no focus on one or two of the members. They all get solos, (even if it's different songs) sometimes all of them get solos in the same song! It's like nothing I've ever heard until I found them. Japan is the Rock and Metal capital of the world !
It's so refreshing to watch all these young , innovative , insanely talented bands perform their stuff live - faultlessly - rather than a bunch of geriatrics lip synching to backing tracks ( and even having to use cue cards to do that much )

Have you done NEMOPHILA yet? They are another all girl Japanese band but are heavier than BAND-MAID. Try their song Rise. Back to BAND-MAID and they have well over 100 songs so don't sell yourself short and not explore the rest of their work because they are probably the best rock band in the world. Not hard rock and definitely not metal (unlike NEMOPHILA who are punk metal) just rock but very good. Even their earliest stuff is very good.

Nemophila is a supergroup of established musicians, who are similar to Band-Maid in the aspect of creating a variety of music. They began in 2019 making a few covers to showcase vocalist Mayu, whose band Lipstick had just broken up. Aaand they had fun and it snowballed. They just released a power ballad, Odyssey. They have a string of original metal numbers and some classic metal covers. Mayu can do harsh screams and pivot to clean vocals in a millesecond.
      They are superb.
Want to mention that Lovebites drummer Haruna is 4'9" and has been described as a pocket nuke, playing hard and fast for most of 2 hours straight. She is also a friend of Band-Maid's Akane, who recently completed an epic 3 hour and 40 minute concert in the 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena, and Lovebites was attending.
Hanabie is... controlled chaos. Insane energy. I enjoy describing these bands but that is all the description I can think of. Gotta hear them too.
Okay I'll shut up. My enthusiasm for these youngish lady rock and metal bands has been like a new religious proselyte for about 8 years, since I found Band-Maid and started exploring! Rock on!
