    I'm looking at growing that Mamey sapote where I am in Australia which is on the east coast & 150 kilometres north of Sydney.
    Our climate zone is meant to be 11a but I think that just means that our minimum temperature rarely gets below 4°C in the winter time.
    I've noticed that Miamis winter temperatures are a bit more like Darwins in Australia but not as extreme, their climate zone is actually 11b because it is a tropical Savannah area where there is virtually no difference between their winter & summer,rather they have 2 seasons which are wet in summer & dry in winter.
    Ours has been very extreme with the highest temperature in summer being 47°C in 2016,last summer (2017) the peak temperature was 44°C,the butterflies didn't hatch from their cocoons until about April this year when the top temperature was 32°C in the middle of Autumn,it was too hot for them in summer time.
    The night time temperature was in the teens during the summer time but now in late autumn is has been somewhere between 5-11°C at its coldest (at 6AM).
    I have Jackfruit seedlings growing but one lost its leaves one night,I think it may have another sprout coming out from the bottom so I repotted them all into bigger pots,the nights do get down to 5 - 6°C & so far,the other 3 of them have held up well,I have ordered another seed just in case.
    I also have mango,Longan,pomegranate & papaya seedlings growing as well which have been taking the cooler nights.
    Naturally, I'd expect my avocado trees to take the cooler weather, it is the heat I'll have to worry about at Christmas time.
    As far as day temperatures go,the plants are loving the 19-22°C temperatures.

    why don't you ship to CA - are there plans to do so? if so, when?!

    • @PalmdaleGal
      @PalmdaleGal 4 роки тому

      CA is very protective of agricultural products. Much of the country's food is grown in CA Central Valley, and a stray pest or disease could wipe out a lot of it. That's why CA has so many agricultural inspection stations near state entry points. Unless any plant product is declared safe by CA, it's forbidden. Perhaps Mamey has not yet been passed and allowed? Or perhaps it has since 2017?

    I had mamey for the first time today. I have a question, when I was eating it, there were a few crunchy stick-like things inside it, almost like small chicken bones but I could still chew them up. Is that normal, or should I have waited a bit longer to eat it?

      Fabian Aguirre Could be sprouts from the seeds roots

    • @SonicServicesLlc
      @SonicServicesLlc 7 років тому

      There should not be any crunchy parts on a mamey. it may have been a small piece of the of the peel that found its way in when you cut it.
      Mamey has a smooth custard-like consistency, it tends to get stringy only towards the outer parts like just under the peel.

    • @Phenomenal-oc1xo
      @Phenomenal-oc1xo 7 років тому

      xxJoexx I think it was the seed had begun to sprout ,because the crunchy strimgs were inside the flesh itself. It was creamy like it should be, but with crunchy strands.

      Hey man. If it ever freezes in your part of Italy, you shouldn't grow this plant unless you will have it in a pot. 1 freeze will ruin 2 years worth of harvest because the fruits take 2 years to ripen (and 7 to give you fruit from seed)

      Chiko in the Philippines is called sapodilla which is a small fruit that taste more like brown sugar. Mamey Sapote is relatively unknown to the Philippines. Very few people are growing it. It is one of the South American fruits that have not made it mainstream to the Philippines yet. I have never seen Mamey Sapote in the Philippines yet for sale.
