Just tasted this fruit yesterday and fell in love with it,its sweet like a sweet potatoe and pumpkin like he said. My mother in law gave it to me and as soon as I finished I asked if she could bring me more from her house in Mexico. I'm thankful I got introduced to this fruit
I've been looking for this fruit for a long time. I'm originally from Central America so we used to eat it all the time. I finally found it at a North Gate Super Market, before I came across your video. I never thought of googling it. Thanks for the vid.
I'm traveling in Guatemala and tried my first mamey capote tonight. Yum! It does taste like the best sweet potatoes EVER! I'd love to try it in a smoothie!
Thanks for the video. Saw some of this at the grocery store today. I was hesitant to buy one since I never heard of it. I will definitely buy some next time I'm there.
Very interesting. My wonderful young neighbors just returned from S Florida and brought us an assortment of tropical fruit, but all ready for eating. That mamey was the sweetest fruit I have ever eaten. Now I am totally hooked. Thanks for the additional information. Maybe if I hint enough, the neighbors will bring more....might make some cookies for them to sweeten the deal.
Love your channel. I am a fellow fruit tree specialist and can't say enough about your informative videos on tropical fruits. In San Diego we cannot grow Jackfruit but wish we could!
Thanks for making this vid. I saw mamey sitting in a section of the grocery store and I wanted to buy it but I had no idea what it was or how I was supposed to eat it so I thought I'd look it up on the internet before I went and bought it. It looks like it's going to be delicious.
Love your channel! I have a Sapote Mamey that I planted Aug 2018. At the time it was a 100 gallon tree. So far no fruits. For the past 2 years the flowers dried, but this season I have flowers that did not dry yet. Should I add Iron now? I added gypsum in November and Sept last year to the soil last year... Any advice?
I had that in February when I went to Florida. They were so good! Had the smoothie version also. That was good too! Can't find any here in Las Vegas yet.
Yes, this uneven ripening occasionally happens. It is most likely due to either harvesting the fruit before it was fully mature on the tree, or not letting the fruit mature fully in your home. The large mamey takes longer to mature than other fruits. If it has not matured throughout and it is picked from the tree, those hard spots can occur.
I just found some at the market but all of them were small like a small avacado or small potato size... Scratch test = Green... so my question is will they ever ripen if i leave them out? Thank you.
Thanks for the info and i have a question for you what is the variety of a mango i have (watch in my videos) please i was searching a lot but i cant find any info about my mango.
Oh my! I have never eaten banana peels but it sounds like the fruit was not ripe. Ripe mamey has a truly wonderful, rich flavor. Be sure to wait for the mature fruit (you can tell it is mature by the scratch test that shows orange color underneath) to be VERY soft before you open it. Then you will enjoy that delicious mamey flavor!
I just tried a mamey for the first time yesterday....it was amazing. Now i'm trying to germinate the seed, just for fun. The tree looks similar to a loquat tree to me. Next I want to try black sapote but have no idea where to find it.
I once bought a bag of this fruit from a roadside stand while driving near, I believe was Florida City or Naranja. I bought them out of sheer curiosity and couldn't believe how good they were. However, some of them were very unevenly ripe which I thought was very unusual for a fruit. One part of it would be soft and sweet but there would be parts of the inside which were hard and unsweet.Normally, a fruit is either ripe or not, but this was unevenly ripe with some parts soft and other parts hard.
Namaste. I'm from India - Kerala. I hope you are safe and well during this tough time! I'm planning on planting the Mamey Sapote tree in my estate, if possible. )) So if I could somehow find out the dimensions of this tree that I saw in your video, it would give me a clear idea. I have seen varying specifics on the internet. And I'm not so sure. So could you please find out for me how much land space was occupied (dimensions - feet/meters) by this specific tree from its owner? In a domestic environment it grows less taller. Still the tree looks enormous!!! One more thing. How would you compare the Sapodila fruit with Mamey Sapote? I mean does it taste like Sapodila or is it completely different? Which fruit is sweeter and has a more fruity flavour? I have Sapodila trees here. ))) Thanks ahead. Pete :")
So is the scratch test the best way to determine which mamey to pick up at the grocery store? What about how squishy they are? I was checking some out earlier today and there were a few that were rather firm and a few that were extremely soft. What all should I look for in these?
For freezing cut in cubes and flash freeze. Take a tray, cover with parchment paper and place the cubes so they don't touch each other. Once they are frozen for a few hours or even overnight, place in freezer bag. This way you can have loose fruit that is not all clumped up.
I just bought one a few days ago and decided to look it up as i knew of black sapore. It’s gotten soft but i just scratched it and it’s yellow orange not red.. 🙁😵💫
Are these fruits grown with pesticides? Or are they organic? Love me some white sapote, but I usually get it from Glaser farms and I'm not sure where they are getting them from. Definitely interested in getting some more Sapote and Mamey, especially if local and organic.
A gardener told my parents that this is the fruit that is growing from a very very large tree in our backyard. Unfortunately the ones I picked are green, so I guess I can't eat them. However, the ones in my backyard aren't growing on the branches, they seem to have their own stem. When I knocked them off the tree they were leaking an extremely thick and viscous white sap. I know you mentioned in the beginning that there are several types, so are there other varieties that grow from small stems? I just feel like I'll have no idea when to knock them off the tree as they are very high up and the ones I picked will "never ripen", so should I just throw them out? Thanks -Kenny
Kenny, Either way, mamey or sapodilla, do the scratch test before you pick the fruit and look for yellow-green flesh for sapodilla and orange flesh for mamey for a mature fruit. Fruits with green colored flesh will never ripen once picked, so toss them in the compost pile. When fruit is high in the tree like that, it is very hard to tell when the sapote fruits are mature, that is why commercial growers cut their trees to a more manageable height, or use a lift to get the fruit at the top.
@TropicalFruitGrowers Where in south florida I want a sapodilla so bad. Last time I had one I was a child. i'm from the island and we have a lot of mamay and sapodilla there.
Is it same with sawo ? I mean here in indonesia. There's a smaller version of it. The inside is lit bit golden and it's very sweet. I wonder if they're the same.
You guys plant the trees how long before it starts giving fruits it grows in the jungles it takes a long time to give fruits that way can you give some more information on growing the trees as a kid we use to go the rainforest to find this fruit some were around the farms but the trees were very tall
yeh. the scratch test is it?.. i always tried to feel for even softness.. but sometimes you loose. i just got 3 bad soursops from the store:(. wasted $25. any growers got those. i didnt see them on the website?
Softness, or a gentle yield on fruits indicates that the fruit is ripe - the same for sapodilla. For mamey, the fruit should be VERY soft when it is ready to eat. But to choose a fruit that is not yet soft, do the scratch test so you don't get burned.
Yes, you are right, they are the same fruit. Plants take on common names in the area in which they are grown. Sapodilla is Naseberry in the Caribbean; nispero in Cuba & Puerto Rico; chico in the Phillipenes; chicosapote in Mexico,.. These many local names are why EVERY plant in the world has been assigned ONE specific scientific name, a genus and species name - so that where ever you are in the world when you say Manilkara sapote you are talking about naseberry, chico and nispero!
Yes, several of our members have tropical fruit nurseries in the Miami area that can help you out. Please visit our website and click on the Nurseries photo. Thanks for contacting us!
Yes, the scratch test works on ALL mamey. Look for that orange color where you scratched to determine maturity of the fruit. If the fruit is squishy, it is already mature and has ripened. It should be ready to eat. If the fruit was picked immature from the tree, it would never ripen to that squishy, soft feel. If the fruit is firm, AND has orange-ish colored flesh from the scratch test, that fruit will ripen in a few days. Remember to let the fruit get very soft before you open it. ENJOY!
Yes, mamey IS delicious! It is large (2-5 lbs), has a creamy texture and one big seed. We grow another fruit called sapodilla here in south Florida that is smaller than the mamey, and has 3-5 small, brown seeds inside. The flesh has the texture of a pear, and the flavor of brown sugar. They are in season right now! Visit our website for more on the sapodilla and to place an order. A sapodilla video comes out this month! Stay tuned to our channel!
@alexisstjohn Glad to hear that you liked our video! We tried to include very practical information in ALL of our videos so that you can enjoy the fruit. Let me know if you'd like to have other information, either in future videos, or on our website.
I'd like to buy a mamey tree... I have not have the fruit in years. I live in Arkansas, where in the winter it gets cold... can this be grown in a large pot and kept inside during the winter? If so, do you guys sell the plant and ship out of state?
HI, Go to the pull down menu on the left side of the page called "Buy Fruit" The page is listed there. We are rearranging the Home Page to include a photo for Organic fruit growers. thanks for your patience. TFGSF
Your company doesn't ship directly? I have to buy from a distributor? Is that right? What are the benefits of becoming a member? Thanks in advance for taking time to respond.
Also, let your fruit get really soft and wrinkly before eating, so that it will be ripe all the way through. And be sure to do the scratch test on the fruit to be sure the fruit is mature throughout, and will ripen properly.

Best fruit you ca ever have PERIOD. Mamey milkshake is to die for.

Thanks for the video. Saw some of this at the grocery store today. I was hesitant to buy one since I never heard of it. I will definitely buy some next time I'm there.
Yes, there is some fruit at this time of year, but not very much. Wait until the late Spring for Florida fruit to start coming off the trees.
I learned that putting fruits & veggies in refrigerator will stop ripening, and about sapotes. Thank you!

Can you tell me how the fruit and plant of Mamey sapote Lara variety look like. I am having lara variety of this but not exactly sure if it same.

The food eating noises you make while eating the mamey would cause my husband to go through the roof.
I know. They are THAT good! :)

No, we have no black sapote growers in our association, but you can try one of the fruit stands listed on our website.
Would love to know what’s the lowest temperature those particular specimens have endured.
I just bought one a few days ago and decided to look it up as i knew of black sapore. It’s gotten soft but i just scratched it and it’s yellow orange not red.. 🙁😵💫

mmmmm batido de mamey is GREAT in the summer, just had some Mamey icecream
Without touching, how can you tell if mamey is ready to pick? We have an extra high tree that makes it too difficult to climb and scratch.
Best fruit!. im eating one right now
Que fruta linda amei.
Is it same with sawo ? I mean here in indonesia. There's a smaller version of it. The inside is lit bit golden and it's very sweet. I wonder if they're the same.

Are the fruit treated or sprayed or is it chemical free?
Is it normal if there’s some white inside it or is it mold?

Some of our growers are transitioning to organic, but it is difficult here in the moist, hot climate of south Florida.

Can i visit this place? Can you help me how to grow it?
I couldn't find the organic page on your website. Mind pointing me in the right direction? Thanks..
All this great fresh tropical fruit, more growers need to move towards organic though
Awesome!
Do you sell trees too?
I just moved to Naples and started a fruit forest on my 5 acre lot and I'd love to grow some mamey!!!
Yes! You need to let the fruit ripen!!! It tastes WAY better!
