- This video is about Otitis Externa or Swimmer's Ear (infection of the outer ear)
Otitis Externa (OE) usually caused by water exposure
Symptoms typically are ear pain and drainage, and sometimes tenderness, redness, swelling
Almost never have symptoms outside of the ear (no fever, stuffy nose, runny nose, etc)
Mild OE may be treated with over-the-counter medications like Swim Ear
More severe OR generally require medicated (antibiotic or antifungal medications +/- steroid)
If ear clogged, may need to be suctioned
If ear canal significantly swollen, may need an ear wick to prevent canal from swelling shut
If it keeps happening, consider staying out of the water, wearing special ear plugs for swimming, and/or drying the ear after
Try to air out the ear until healed
Dry ear precautions until resolved as well

Dal Ive only had it for 2 days now and it’s so painful yesterday my dad bought me drops and it’s still not making a bid difference I’m Latina do my mom used this plant called ruda and put alcohol and like mushed them up together and then put it in a cloth and put it on my ear it stopped the hurting and I also dranked ibuprofen

I did, my pain was so bad one time the only thing that would ease the pain was stomping in circles. I honestly don't know why but that's how bad it hurt.

@@Leeny. antibiotic ear drops. You can get them prescribed by any doctor. Warm them up slightly in a cup of water before administering. Key word slightly

TO ANYOME WHO HAS IT: I know it hurts like crazy, and mine hurt so bad it had he whole left side of my body in pain. The drops prescribed to me are “neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and hydrocortisone OTIC solution”. And I am taking antibiotics. You’ll also need a pain medication. Like ibuprofen, Tylenol, etc.
I just got all that today. 2 days was enough for me to try and ride out

Same. So damn annoying. Going on 3 weeks now. The first doctor gave me antibiotics which did not help so I seen a second doctor who gave me ear drops. Going on 3 days using them. The pain isnt as bad and can hear now but I can still feel my ear throbbing and get sharp pains. I wanna rip my ear off. Almost a month now. It started to go away for a few days then it came back last night. Fml

I’m only eighteen and this is by far one of the worse pains I’ve ever experienced in my life. Worse than breaking my hand, or having a brick fall on me from 50 feet in the air. The pain is constant; and even though I may have been given ear drops with antibiotics in them, my ear has swelled to the point of where it feels like there’s water in there, but it’s only from my ear being so swollen shut. Perhaps one of the most difficult weeks of my life as I’ve had to incur so many hard things such as, having to dig a 6 foot grave by myself due to my grandmothers dog passing away and also giving my friend a place to stay because he’s homeless. The left side of my jaw hurts so bad that it’s extremely difficult for me to chew and some days it’s so unbearable that I only have a sandwich for the entire day. I would wake up multiple times in the middle of the night and as ironic as it may be, I would deliberately run my ear under warm water for half an hour just to ease the pain. This all started to happen when I used an earwax removal kit in attempt to remove earwax from my ear canal. I wasn’t aware that removing a large quantity of earwax from your ear made you susceptible to getting an infection. I believe that could have been what started all of this, or perhaps the fact that our shower had broke and I’ve been having to take baths for the past week. I read a comment that said, “I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.” And neither would I. I’m glad to see that I’m not alone in this however, I’m also saddened at the fact that so many other people are having to experience the same pain as I am. I hope for all of whoever’s reading this to heal faster than I am right now, I just wanted to share the experiences of which I’ve been going through the past week that seems like an eternity. Stay strong.❤️

@Ice Sonic Hi, I whish you a fast recovery, in my case I end up going to the doctor on day 4 and they gave me antibiotics and painkillers, after that 2 days later my ear went back to normal. Whish you the best. Try apply warm compress like a warm washcloth it helps a little bit to alleviate pain.
@Ice Sonic hi to back up the person under you. My ear got better after 5/6 days so it may take a while but dont lose hope it ill go away. The painkillers helped alot tho. But i get it with the anxiety . Its horrible

I'm suffering right now...I've had it for 10 days now...the pain was bearable so I didnt take it seriously but day 9 it got so bad...I had to see a doctor..he prescribed antibiotics ear drops and that has helped a lot..today there was drainage which I assume is a good thing. Isn't it?

I had otitis media in my left ear on Wednesday night, the pain was so bad, but on Saturday my right began to hurt as well, so bad I nearly passed out. I couldnt move, talk or function, gf rushed me to the hospital and they just gave me antibiotics. By Monday (today) morning the right ear had got so worse and swollen so I went to the doctors and they prescribed me ear drops. I pray they work because right now this is the worst pain I have ever felt in my whole life, by a long way. If you are reading this and you have it too I am so sorry and wish you a quick recovery.

I would never wish this pain on anyone!!! I had it a year ago in one ear then I ended up getting it in the other ear .. pain was definitely a 10/10 and it only got worse when I tried to sleep 😣 felt like if there was a damn needle stabbing me dead ass in my ear every 5-10 mins and not only that but I couldn’t hear a damn thing

It tried to blow my nose today and almost collapsed from the pain. Chewing and swallowing hurts, I can hardly hear and hiccups are a nightmare...I’m lucky to have a nurse at work to look at it, otherwise I wouldn’t be going in tomorrow!

This is the second time I have had this. This is definitely the worst one. I bawled my eyes out. Had it for a week and no one wants to give you pain meds because stupid people abused the system of pain meds and now we are all paying for it.

I am just now recovering from it. I tried to bare the pain for 3 days straight non-stop and at 2 in the morning I totally lost it and went to the ER. They have me strong pain killers and prescribed me ear drops. The strong pain meds will help without a doubt. Over the counter won’t do a thing for an infection in severe pain. Drops have helped heal the pain away after 3 days of use. And getting better 🙂

Swimmers ear is the worst. I have it now, I lost being able to hear, the pain is such so much i couldnt sleep at all but i am taking medicine and having drops in. I recommend eating some cold food it helps so much! I also have it in both ears, so i had both ears in pain but EXTREME PAIN this is the worst pain i have EVER FELT IN MY WHOLE LIFE AND I ALMOST DIED BECAUSE I COULDNT BREATHE BC OF ASTHMA

I've got this for 10 days now. Worse pain, and getting stabbing sharp pain above my ear. Also given me many headaches. I'm in UK. First given amoxicillin from Doctor. Then went back again and told my canel is infected, and not the drum. I wasn't told what the illness was called but would guess its swimmer's ear....although I haven't been swimming. 2nd visit to doctors they gave me Otomize ear spray. Told to keep ear dry. The pain in uncontrollable at times. Seems worse at night. Hopefully it will improve soon, as unbearable. Feel sorry for all those with this. Unsure on how long until it gets better.

I had this type of ear infection a few years back. It was that bad the the entire side of my face swelled up and I was in hospital for a week having IV antibiotics and my ear suctioned everyday. It was the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced!

Swimmers ear is like living HELL
It hurts so bad. I haven’t been able to sleep for more than two hours at a time. When I do sleep and wake up it comes back full force after ten seconds and I cry. It feels like someone is repeatedly jamming a knife and hammer into my ear. I can’t open my jaw and it hurts to talk/smile. I don’t even swim - I got this by repeatedly stuffing q tips in my ear because it’s always so itchy. I’m literally crippled by this; I haven’t gotten any schoolwork done bc it hurts too much to move. Even typing this comment I want to die. Im literally never going to use q tips ever again. I’m throwing them away once I’m better. I’m sorry if I sound dramatic but I just needed to get this off my chest.

Ive fractured my ankle twice, sprained it once (the same one) and I can still say that Otisis Externa is the WORST thing Ive ever experienced. On top of it its happing during Eid and my birthday, so yeah it sucks yall
I have this and had such a hard time sleeping and even chewing food because my jaw moved my ear. I went to the doctors and got these special ear drops. I put the drops in and after one day feel like I’ve regained control of my life. Please go to your doctor!!!

Thank you for getting right to the point. I just watched five videos of doctors talking my head off overloading me with information that I don't need. My ear is hurting I need to know what to do to stop the pain. I don't want to learn how to be a physician. I just want my pain to stop. I have this now is was the worst pain ever it happened 3 days ago and the pain was 6 the last straw was today in the morning I woke up 3 am I couldn’t sleep well due to the pain I said “ nah I’m going to work late today so I have to see a doctor “ I went to urgent care and they help me and I just put it ear drops and finally it’s in a getting healing stage. I don’t commend on this on anyone. I had swimmers ear infection

I am reading these comments as I am currently on day 3 of horrible ear pain . My dad is a doctor and I’m very fortunate he got me to see an ENT who suctioned my ears and put a wick in the worst one . A day after the wick and my ear still hurts !! It’s now crusting outside my ear and I’m worried the wick isn’t absorbing the drops . I’m also on heavy antibiotics and the pain is simply unbearable. Hoping my dad can prescribe me a stronger pain medication cause I seriously rather die than go thru this

I had an ear wick inserted into my ear a couple of hours ago. This ear pain is one of the worst if not the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life

I feel like punching a wall. Like taking all of the pain medication. The antibiotics haven't done anything. My jaw hurts. My face is numb. There's someone stabbing my ear. By far the worst pain I've ever felt.
This pain is 10x worse than the pain I felt after I got my wisdom tooth removed.
Been awake since 3am.

inside of my ear hurts. my grandma looked inside with a flashlight and said she saw white stuff which she thinks could be pus or cotton. i never want to use q-tips again 😭
Ugh, thats what it looks like!? It looks as bad as it feels. 😖 YUCKY. I was very prone to catching this as a little girl…I once had it so bad that i was SO SWOLLEN that i couldn’t put my hearing aids in at all, I was so MISERABLE. The worst part is, i wasn’t a SWIMMER! I HATED THE WATER! Lol.

Very informative. How did you guys bear the pain for weeks or even months?? For me, on the 2nd day I got severe headache from the affected side to ear and it disturbed my chewing ability. The pain started on Friday. I went clinic to see doctor on Saturday. He prescribed me with ear drop antibiotics and ear wax removal. But on Sunday the pain was unbearable caused me headache and my neck/throat pain which I had to go see specialist because I do not think it is because of ear wax. It turn out I got infection and inflammation in my ear. My ENT specialist had to use suction to clean it up and put ear wick. Now I'm on antibiotics and my doctor prescribed me with anti inflammation medicine. Immediately my headache is gone(such a big relief). I thank God I trusted my instinct to see specialist. Guys, do not delay to see specialist especially if it relates to important part of your body.

Your story is similar to mine too it started hurting on Friday then I went to the hospital on Saturday because of the pain went home with eardrops but the next day on Sunday the worst pain ever and went back to the Hospital and they put in Ear Wix which hurted and they said my ears were inflamed but I really wanted pain meds :(
I have had discharge from my ear for two months now 😳 Went to the doctors at the start but I guess the medication did not work. I don't want to go back to see them because it's just stuff leaking from my ear with no pain. But bro it's been two months ://
Have experienced this damn thing! It is even impossible to touch my ear for the pain that would also hurt my jaw. Brought me sever headaches and fever and i rea|y cannot chew my food properly
Ellaine Yuson I have it right now too 😭 luckily it’s holiday break so I won’t be at diving (so I won’t have to go in the water). My jaw hurt so bad yesterday and I can relate to the chewing thing. I think it’s pretty moderate, I don’t think it is as severe as it was two days ago. Good luck
