I say this guy is seriously smart: he got to the root of the problem (minimizing the lifting effort) with simple, inexpensive, reliable, off-the-shelf components. Somebody could dress it up with welded alu or steel, or something, but the concept is pure genius.
My dad taught me leverage when I was young. He used the quote, "Give me a long enough pole, and a place to stand and I can move the world." Also, Work smart, not hard! You can imagine how somebody could wear themselves out, getting all mad, scratch the car, scratch the boat, and have no energy left for what the purpose is, which is to enjoy the boat on the water. Look how cool and smooth he is. Zero effort. Pay attention, kids. . . . Also from the military, the expression, "slow is smooth and smooth is fast."
Simple, but at the same time ingenious. I spend a lot of time carrying kayaks and I also have an inflatable boat and outboard which I often use solo and transport without a trailer. A large part of it is having the right system of loading and unloading to minimise the effort. Yes, there are many circumstances in which a trailer would be simpler (my sailing dinghy has a trailer) but space, cost and so on are all considerations. I'm impressed with the thought that has gone into this. Respect.
For all who criticizes this work : Maybe you have no idea that in many countries, a berth costs money (much) A trolley cost many money for insurance, mantainence, and the box space. (a little boat could be hunged on box roof : the trolley no. With this system (that is, I admit, a bit complicated) you have save much money!.
This is GREAT!!! Come on!!! Those who criticize are out of touch with reality! This method uses the least materials and the least set-up. It's cheap, effective, and quick (good grief... the entire video is 3.5 minutes long-- you're on the water for many hours-- a few minutes to load and unload is nothing!). My schedule causes me to go boating alone (I'm off when everyone is working)... so this will work perfectly for me. Thumbs up from Southern California!
Hello, do you have plans on how to build this boat loader. Or do you have more detailed pictures of the car rack and this loading rack? Thank you, Steve
This is really cool and I'd like to adapt it for a kayak- where can I get the design? I'm sorry to see all the negative comments- they are unproductive, un-informed, and they show you how dumb people think they are smart and like to share their dumbness while they try to seem authoritative on things they are ignorant.
You must be kidding. Did you really look at all the comments? If you had, you would see that the vast majority applaud this guy for his ingenuity. Stop being so negative.
Some people, no matter where they're from can't afford a towbar, Electrics, light board and trailer. If only, that would be awesome but I'll be making one of these for my mirror to car top because it's so awkward to get on the rack. Thanks for your negative comments, the people who read them will be so very impressed
I've seen a half dozen inventions for loading a boat or kayak on the roof of a car. The motorcycle community isn't anywhere near as creative when it comes to loading a motorcycle on a truck. If you search youtube, every solution involves laying a plank as a ramp and riding up it, with the motorcycle falling off half the time. We need some creative inventors!
Hi 5084204 ! Official drivers manual of this car(VW) says the roof racks limit load is 100 Kg. Furthermore, since this boat is only 65 kg even if it looks heavy, there is sufficient margin. We can build the boat of a traditional shape very lightly by the Epoxy plywood method. See "GL-labo" site.
It is easier than lifting the boat to take down it. An order of work becomes completely opposite to lifting. However, the time required seldom changes.
The "problem" is math based. [ Move a certain amount of weight.] And, as with all math problems, the method is to break it into pieces that can be solved. This man broke the weight into pieces using his very effective tool.
Who wants to go through all that every time you want to go fishing? Then you have to load & unload the motor, the gas tank, all your fishing tackle. Just put the boat on a trailer instead.
@MrPavePaws (1) this makes it easy, so you could go boating often. leaving it at the docks where I live would be extremely expensive... and the boat would certainly be stolen (2) why schedule to borrow a truck when for a few bucks you can make this? (3) the wood fulcrums attach to the racks. put duct tape on the racks before using them (4) where I live, if you ask anyone anything, they think you want to rob them, so they run away and call the police There's a lot to say for independence.
Nothing new there as roof racks for cars date back to at least the 1920s - problem is, I don't believe that roof rack is rated for anything near what that boat appears to weigh. You're much safer off in that situation with a small trailer that the car can tow.
yea, tow ball, electrics, depreciation in value of a vehicle with a towbar, an extension to your driving licence in the UK, you can only drive at 60mph oh and nearly forgot you need a trailer.
I'd do this but I'm too afraid of scratching/denting/gauging my car. Even if you've done it 5 times without incident, it only takes that one little slip the wrong direction.
Trucks get terrible mileage and gasoline is almost $4 a gallon, not everyone lives close to the water. A small trailer is a better idea however then you have to constantly worry about your trailer being stolen while on the water. Which is a serious concern when launching from remote areas and leaving the vehicle for days or weeks at a time.
My thoughts: 1) How often do you load & unload your boat? Leave it on the shore locked up or at the docks. 2) Borrow a buddy's pickup truck. 3) Scratches for the car from those wood fulcrums. 4) Kindness of strangers or friends. Loading it at the house - ask your neighbor or someone. At the docks, as a passerby. Two seconds with 2 people.
What person in their right mind is gonna carry a boat that size on a car that size and have all that hardware and a boat dolly .. Nice job but not practical..
you have to wonder (A),what kind of audiences he gets every time he decides to go boating,(B) has this guy got no friends /neighbours,(C)why he doesn't buy a trailer and (D)is the tide still in by the time he gets there.
Geez, spend the extra $30 and buy a tow-ball, then use the damn trailer. The poor excuse for a roof rack on these vehicles are designed for looks, not practicality or usage.

It's a sad sight...He is alone and there is no one to help
Hello, do you have plans on how to build this boat loader. Or do you have more detailed pictures of the car rack and this loading rack? Thank you, Steve
We will make a mutual subscription to promote our channels ... did the same Johnice of different materials. Maybe I'll be a cat.
This is really cool and I'd like to adapt it for a kayak- where can I get the design?

There are an astonishing number of hostile/racist/ignorant comments on this video. Weird.
You must be kidding. Did you really look at all the comments? If you had, you would see that the vast majority applaud this guy for his ingenuity. Stop being so negative.
Paul Ogea quite true, I should look on the bright side.
Some people, no matter where they're from can't afford a towbar, Electrics, light board and trailer. Brilliant idea BUT..does it exceed roof rack weight limit? 3 roof bars would be better.

Atsushi Doi Please let us know who designed your dinghy. Congrats on the clever contraption for getting your boat on your car.
Ok so now what? How do yo get the boat off? Do you carry the rails with you and where do you put the dolly?
next video - how too get the car in the boat. The boat is huge... but very pretty.
holy crap what a good idea
Nesesity is the mother of ingenuity. Well done.
👍 "Necessity is the mother of invention." - how I’ve heard (and practiced) this idea.
I admire Mr. Niwa, this is a creative solution - maybe not the right one for me, but glad to see people thinking outside the box!
What about offloading?
Hahahaha
necessity is the mother of invention *but We Are The FATHER!*
It is easier than lifting the boat to take down it.
An order of work becomes completely opposite to lifting.
However, the time required seldom changes.
Wait wait wait how much weight is allowed and also yes quite ingeneous
Классная идея. Буду пробовать!
The "problem" is math based. [ Move a certain amount of weight.] And, as with all math problems, the method is to break it into pieces that can be solved. This man broke the weight into pieces using his very effective tool.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing!

Cool method !!!
Great idea, very clever!
Japanese ingenuity at work. Elegant. simple, efficient, thrifty. Geez!
Man without friends this
great way to do it
This is a great example for an ingenious Idea for an non existent problem. His next device will help get a horse into the back of a hatchback.
good point about kindness of strangers, but there is something very satisfying about self-reliance
@MrPavePaws

Harsh. In the UK it costs thousands of pounds to update your driving license, in order to use a trailer. and then you have to buy a trailer.
Definitely used 2 hands there Mr Doi...........ha ha.
Well I like it. My mates are all on different rosters and a boat trailer would make 3 in the back yard. This would be great for my tear drop trailer.
Maybe you are right - my Thule roofracks are limited up to 75 kg. I belive that such a load, should be on a suitable trailer.
Great idea. Simple to make. Thanks for sharing.
Genius!
А снимать как?
Agreed with ScottsUtubeWordls. I think this is a good method to carry boat, but also 17 Canoe or 20 Canoe.
great idea but it takes way too long and its a lot of work. were does the long 2x4s go ??
17 Canoe = 17 foot canoe.
20 Canoe = 20 foot canoe (if highway code allows this lenght).
Great job Mayrdums2!
Mr Niwa might not be interested in your problems either
So strange that other persons think and build the same method. See B843S8Pz6xg
I want to see You unload and launch this WITHOUT "single hand" )))
Thanks so much, between your video and others, I came up with a system
Nривет @SuperMegaPops
Лодку, которая не подпадает ни разу.
it takes a min but it works how do you take it down?
TO hat job beautiful 😫
Thank you (^_^)v
...
Brilliant design. Thanks.
good video too
Next he puts trailer on boat !
Give me an example of the roof racks (legally) capable to carry loads above 75kg, please.
Get off your big fat arse and ask your roof rack supplier. The man's given you the way to do it; he's not selling his kit.
smart ass, lol good job man
Great 👍👍👍
Brilliant. :)
great work..
Thank you !
Он явно заипался, я думал лодка упадет всё-таки.
Wonderful and very helpful! Sometimes you want to go alone or go too early for working friends!
Very close friends there; we prefer just to stay the two of us but I'm sure she lets off some steam on her own too, her side.
Какой вес?😄👍
I have another method thats practically foolproof. GET A TRAILER LLOOLLOLOL
It SAYS SINGLEHAND.... hmmmm but he used both hands... its just a soft vw car ... just drag it up over the back of it... ;)
Perfect
Thank you very much. I have the confidence this is perfect,
but it isn't often understood easily.

Too much work........
I'd do this but I'm too afraid of scratching/denting/gauging my car. Even if you've done it 5 times without incident, it only takes that one little slip the wrong direction.
that's a wonderful idea! but I love my old truck and kayak - easy to load and takes a minute or two.
Trucks get terrible mileage and gasoline is almost $4 a gallon, not everyone lives close to the water. A small trailer is a better idea however then you have to constantly worry about your trailer being stolen while on the water. Or you could have bought a truck like a whiteman...
wow what a stupid idea!! i feel dumb for watching the entire thing.... wow
My thoughts:
1) How often do you load & unload your boat?

@sharpie1341 Not a non-existent problem, but definitely a niche issue.
That seems like too much walking! Get a trailer or something...
you have to wonder (A),what kind of audiences he gets every time he decides to go boating,(B) has this guy got no friends /neighbours,(C)why he doesn't buy a trailer and (D)is the tide still in by the time he gets there.
People are so cool let's see I got a car ... let me put a boat on top of it that is bigger than the car using one person and then drive around lmao ..
this is a crazy china man trick . completely dangerous as far as driving goes .
i think Mr Niwa has made alot of friends
have you tried this method?
Can't ya just buy a trailer. ....how much weight can roof hold anyway
I want to see how you unload and launch this "by single hand" at the water.
why just get rid of that boat just go with a flat back canoe or a kayak
lets see it then
I was worried it would go off the other side of the car roof.
how many MPG?
buy a truck
time to re-varnish the gunwales then.
Way to go pops!
poor car
GLAD I HAVE A PICKUP TRUCK
YOUR GOOD ...
get a trailer
With a little work on the design, this contraption could have possibilities. But I can't see anyone with commonsense using it on a car like this....
Geez, spend the extra $30 and buy a tow-ball, then use the damn trailer. The poor excuse for a roof rack on these vehicles are designed for looks, not practicality or usage.
